| 1 Après cela, Absalom se fit faire des chars, prit avec lui des cavaliers, et cinquante hommes qui marchaient devant lui. | 1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. |
| 2 Et, se levant dès le matin, il se tenait à l'entrée du palais; il appelait tous ceux qui avaient des affaires, et qui venaient demander justice au roi. Et il disait à chacun d'eux : D'où êtes-vous? Et on lui répondait : Votre serviteur est de telle tribu d'Israël. | 2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. |
| 3 Et Absalom disait : Votre affaire me paraît bien juste; mais il n'y a personne qui ait ordre du roi de vous écouter. Et il ajoutait: | 3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee. |
| 4 Qui m'établira juge sur le pays, afin que tous ceux qui ont des affaires viennent à moi, et que je les juge selon la justice? | 4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! |
| 5 Et lorsque quelqu'un venait le saluer, il lui tendait la main, le prenait et le baisait. | 5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him. |
| 6 Il traitait ainsi ceux qui venaient de toutes les villes d'Israël demander justice au roi, et il s'insinuait dans l'affection du peuple. | 6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. |
| 7 Quarante ans après, Absalom dit au roi David : Permettez-moi d'aller à Hébron, pour y accomplir les voeux que j'ai faits au Seigneur. | 7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron. |
| 8 Car lorsque j'étais à Gessur, en Syrie, j'ai fait ce voeu à Dieu : Si le Seigneur me ramène à Jérusalem, je Lui offrirai un sacrifice. | 8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD. |
| 9 Le roi David lui dit : Allez en paix. Et il partit, et s'en alla à Hébron. | 9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron. |
| 10 En même temps Absalom envoya des espions dans toutes les tribus d'Israël avec cet ordre : Aussitôt que vous entendrez sonner la trompette, publiez qu'Absalom règne dans Hébron. | 10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron. |
| 11 Or Absalom emmena avec lui de Jérusalem deux cents hommes, qui le suivirent simplement, sans savoir en aucune sorte le dessein de ce voyage. | 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing. |
| 12 Absalom fit aussi venir de Gilo Achitophel, conseiller de David, qui était originaire de la même ville. Et tandis qu'on offrait des victimes, il se forma une puissante conspiration, et la foule du peuple qui accourait pour suivre Absalom croissait de plus en plus. | 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counseller, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom. |
| 13 Un courrier vint aussitôt à David, et lui dit : Tout Israël suit Absalom de tout son coeur. | 13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. |
| 14 David dit à ses serviteurs qui étaient avec lui à Jérusalem : Levez-vous, fuyons; car il n'y aura pas de salut pour nous devant Absalom. Hâtons-nous de sortir, de peur qu'il ne nous prévienne, qu'il ne précipite sur nous la ruine, et qu'il ne fasse passer la ville au fil de l'épée. | 14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. |
| 15 Les serviteurs du roi lui dirent : Nous exécuterons de grand coeur tout ce que notre seigneur le roi nous commandera. | 15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint. |
| 16 Le roi sortit donc à pied avec toute sa maison; et il laissa dix femmes de ses concubines pour garder le palais. | 16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house. |
| 17 Etant donc sorti à pied avec tout Israël, il s'arrêta lorsqu'il était déjà loin de sa maison. | 17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off. |
| 18 Tous ses serviteurs marchaient auprès de lui; les légions des Céréthiens et des Phéléthiens, et les six cents fantassins de la ville de Geth qui avaient suivi David, et qui étaient très vaillants, marchaient tous devant lui. | 18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. |
| 19 Alors le roi dit à Ethaï le Géthéen : Pourquoi venez-vous avec nous? Retournez, et allez avec le nouveau roi; parce que vous êtes étranger, et que vous êtes sorti de votre pays. | 19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile. |
| 20 Vous n'êtes que d'hier à Jérusalem, et vous en sortiriez aujourd'hui à cause de moi? Pour moi j'irai où je dois aller; mais vous, retournez, et emmenez vos hommes avec vous, et le Seigneur usera envers vous de bonté et de fidélité, parce que vous m'avez témoigné vous-même de la bonté et de la fidélité. | 20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee. |
| 21 Ethaï lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur, et vive le roi mon maître; en quelque état que vous soyez, monseigneur le roi, votre serviteur y sera, soit à la mort, soit à la vie. | 21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be. |
| 22 David lui répondit : Venez et passez. Ainsi Ethaï le Géthéen passa avec tous les hommes qui le suivaient, et tout le reste du peuple. | 22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. |
| 23 Et tous pleuraient à haute voix, et tout le peuple passait. Le roi passa aussi le torrent de Cédron, et tout le peuple allait le long du chemin qui regarde vers le désert. | 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness. |
| 24 En même temps, le prêtre Sadoc vint, accompagné de tous les lévites qui portaient l'arche de l'Alliance de Dieu; et ils la déposèrent. Et Abiathar monta jusqu'à ce que tout le peuple qui sortait de la ville fût passé. | 24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city. |
| 25 Alors le roi dit à Sadoc : Reportez à la ville l'arche de Dieu. Si je trouve grâce aux yeux du Seigneur, Il me ramènera, et Il me fera revoir Son arche et Son tabernacle. | 25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation: |
| 26 Mais s'Il me dit : Vous ne m'agréez point, je suis tout prêt; qu'Il fasse de moi ce qu'Il lui plaira. | 26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him. |
| 27 Le roi dit encore au prêtre Sadoc : O Voyant, retournez en paix à la ville avec vos deux fils : Achimaas, votre fils, et Jonathas, fils d'Abiathar. | 27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. |
| 28 Je vais me cacher dans les plaines du désert, jusqu'à ce qu'il m'arrive des nouvelles de votre part. | 28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me. |
| 29 Sadoc et Abiathar reportèrent donc l'arche de Dieu à Jérusalem, et ils y demeurèrent. | 29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there. |
| 30 Cependant David montait la colline des Oliviers, et pleurait en montant. Il allait nu-pieds et la tête couverte; et tout le peuple qui était avec lui montait la tête couverte et en pleurant. | 30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. |
| 31 Or on annonça à David qu'Achitophel aussi était dans la conjuration d'Absalom; et il dit à Dieu : Seigneur, renversez, je Vous prie, les conseils d'Achitophel. | 31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. |
| 32 Et comme David arrivait au sommet de la montagne où il devait adorer le Seigneur, Chusaï d'Arach vint au-devant de lui, ayant ses vêtements déchirés, et la tête couverte de terre. | 32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: |
| 33 David lui dit : Si vous venez avec moi, vous me serez à charge; | 33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me: |
| 34 mais si vous retournez à la ville, et si vous dites à Absalom : Je suis votre serviteur, ô roi, je vous servirai comme j'ai servi votre père, vous dissiperez le conseil d'Achitophel. | 34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. |
| 35 Vous avez avec vous les prêtres Sadoc et Abiathar, auxquels vous direz tout ce que vous aurez appris chez le roi. | 35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. |
| 36 Ils ont leurs deux fils, Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, et Jonathas, fils d'Abiathar; vous m'enverrez dire par eux tout ce que vous aurez appris. | 36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear. |
| 37 Chusaï, ami de David, retourna donc à Jérusalem; et Absalom y entrait en même temps. | 37 So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem. |
