| 4 Ayant conçu une seconde fois, elle eut encore un fils, qu'elle nomma Onan. | 4 And conceiving again, she bore a son, and called him Onan. |
| 5 Et elle enfanta encore un troisième qu'elle nomma Séla, après lequel elle cessa d'avoir des enfants.i | 5 She bore also a third: whom she called Sela. after whose birth, she ceased to bear any more. |
| 6 Juda fit épouser à Her, son fils aîné, une fille nommée Thamar. | 6 And Juda took a wife for Her his firstborn, whose name was Thamar. |
| 7 Ce Her, fils aîné de Juda, fut un très méchant homme, et le Seigneur le frappa de mort. | 7 And Her, the firstborn of Juda, was wicked in the sight of the Lord: and was slain by him. |
| 8 Juda dit donc à Onan, son second fils: Epouse la femme de ton frère et vis avec elle, afin que tu suscites des enfants à ton frère. | 8 Juda, therefore add to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother. |
| 9 Onan, voyant la femme de son frère, et sachant que les enfants qui naîtraient d'elle ne seraient pas à lui, empêchait qu'elle ne devînt mère, de peur que ses enfants ne portassent le nom de son frère. | 9 He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name. |
| 10 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur le frappa de mort, parce qu'il faisait une chose détestable. | 10 And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing. |
| 11 Juda dit donc à Thamar, sa belle-fille: Demeurez veuve dans la maison de votre père, jusqu'à mon fils Séla devienne grand; car il avait peur que Séla ne mourût aussi, comme ses autres frères. Ainsi Thamar retourna demeurer dans la maison de son père. | 11 Wherefore Juda said to Thamar his daughter in law: Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Sela my son grow up: for he was afraid lest he also might die, as his brethren did. She went her way and dwelt in her father's house. |
| 12 Beaucoup de temps s'étant passé, la fille de Sué, femme de Juda, mourut. Juda, après l'avoir pleurée et s'être consolé de cette perte, alla à Thamnas avec Hiras d'Odollam, le pasteur de ses troupeaux, pour voir ceux qui tondaient ses brebis. | 12 And after many days were past, the daughter of Sue the wife of Juda died: and when he had taken comfort after his mourning, he went up to Thamnas, to the shearers of his sheep, he and Hiras the Odollamite the shepherd of his flock. |
| 13 Thamar ayant été avertie que Juda, son beau-père, allait à Thamnas pour faire tondre ses brebis, | 13 And it was told Thamar that her father in law was come up to Thamnas to shear his sheep. |
| 14 Quitta ses habits de veuve, se couvrit d'un grand voile, et, s'étant déguisée, s'assit dans un carrefour, sur le chemin de Thamnas; parce que Séla étant en âge d'être marié, Juda ne le lui avait point fait épouser. | 14 And she put off the garments of her widowhood, and took a veil: and changing her dress, sat in the cross way, that leadeth to Thamnas: because Sela was grown up, and she had not been married to him. |

| 16 Et l'abordant, il lui dit: Laisse-moi m'approcher de toi; car il ne savait pas que ce fût sa belle-fille. Elle lui répondit: Que me donnerez-vous pour ce que vous me demandez? | 16 When Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot: for she had covered her face, lest she should be known. |
| 17 Je vous enverrai, dit-il, un chevreau de mon troupeau. Elle repartit: Je consentirai à ce que vous voulez, pourvu que vous me donniez un gage, en attendant que vous m'envoyiez ce que vous me promettez. | |
| 18 Que voulez-vous que je vous donne pour gage? lui dit Juda. Elle lui répondit: Donnez-moi votre anneau, votre bracelet et le bâton que vous tenez à la main. Ainsi elle conçut de lui, | 18 He said: I will send thee a kid out of the flock. And when she said again: I will suffer what thou wilt, if thou give a pledge, till thou send what thou promisest, |
| 19 Et s'en allant aussitôt, et ayant quitté le costume qu'elle avait pris, elle se revêtit de ses habits de veuve. | 19 Juda said: What wilt thou have for a pledge ? She answered: Thy ring and bracelet, and the staff which thou holdest in thy hand. The woman therefore at one copulation conceived. |
| 20 Juda envoya ensuite le chevreau par son pasteur d'Odollam, afin qu'il retirât le gage qu'il avait donné à cette femme. Mais, ne l'ayant point trouvée, | 20 And she arose and went her way: and putting off the apparel which she had taken, put on the garments of her widowhood. |
| 21 Il demanda aux habitants de ce lieu: Où est une femme qui était assise dans ce carrefour? Tous lui répondirent: Il n'y a pas eu en cet endroit de femme débauchée. | 21 And Juda sent a kid by his shepherd, the Odollamite, that he might receive the pledge again, which he had given to the woman: but he, not finding her, |
| 22 Il retourna auprès de Juda et lui dit: Je ne l'ai point trouvée; et même les habitants de ce lieu m'ont dit que jamais femme de mauvaise vie ne s'était assise en cet endroit. | 22 asked the men of that place : Where is the woman that sat in the cross way? And when they all made answer: There was no harlot in this place, |
| 23 Juda dit: Qu'elle garde ce qu'elle a; elle ne peut pas au moins m'accuser d'avoir manqué à ma parole. J'ai envoyé le chevreau que je lui avais promis, et vous ne l'avez point trouvée. | 23 He returned to Juda, and said to him: I have not found her; moreover the men of that place said to me, that there never sat a harlot there. |
| 24 Mais trois mois après, on vint dire à Juda: Thamar, votre belle-fille, est tombée en fornication, car on commence à s'apercevoir qu'elle est grosse. Juda répondit: Qu'on la produise en public, afin qu'elle soit brûlée. | 24 Juda said : Let her take it to herself ; surely she cannot charge us with a,lie: I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her. |
| 25 Et lorsqu'on la menait au supplice, elle envoya dire à son beau-père: J'ai conçu de celui à qui sont ces gages. Voyez à qui est cet anneau, ce bracelet et ce bâton. | 25 And behold after three months they told a lie, saying: Thamar, thy daughter in law hath played the harlot, and she appeareth to have a big belly. And Juda said : Bring her out that she may be burnt. |
