| 1 Cependant Dieu parla à Jacob et lui dit: Levez-vous, et montez à Béthel; demeurez-y, et dressez un autel au Dieu qui vous apparut lorsque vous fuyiez Esaü, votre frère. | 1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. |
| 2 Alors Jacob, ayant assemblé tous ceux de sa maison, leur dit: Jetez loin de vous les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous, purifiez-vous, et changez de vêtements. | 2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: |
| 3 Venez, montons à Béthel pour y dresser un autel à Dieu, qui m'a exaucé au jour de mon affliction, et qui m'a accompagné pendant mon voyage. | 3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. |
| 4 Ils lui donnèrent donc tous les dieux étrangers qu'ils avaient, et leurs pendants d'oreilles; et Jacob les enfouit sous un térébinthe qui est derrière la ville de Sichem. | 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. |
| 5 Et lorsqu'ils se furent mis en chemin, Dieu frappa de terreur toutes les villes voisines, et on n'osa pas les poursuivre dans leur retraite. | 5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. |
| 6 Ainsi Jacob, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, vint à Luza, surnommée Béthel, qui était dans le pays de Chanaan. | 6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. |
| 7 Il y bâtit un autel et nomma ce lieu la Maison de Dieu, parce que Dieu lui était apparu en ce lieu-là lorsqu'il fuyait Esaü, son frère. | 7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. |
| 8 En ce même temps, Débora, nourrice de Rébecca, mourut et fut enterrée sous un chêne au pied de Béthel, et ce lieu fut nommé le Chêne des pleurs. | 8 But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bachuth. |
| 9 Or Dieu apparut encore à Jacob depuis son retour de Mésopotamie, qui est en Syrie; Il le bénit, | 9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him. |
| 10 Et lui dit: Vous ne serez plus nommé Jacob, mais Israël sera votre nom. Et Dieu le nomma Israël. | 10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. |
| 11 Il lui dit encore: Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant; croissez et multipliez-vous. Vous serez le chef de nations et d'une multitude de peuples, et des rois sortiront de vous. | 11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; |
| 12 Je vous donnerai, et à votre race après vous, la terre que J'ai donnée à Abraham et à Isaac. | 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. |
| 13 Dieu Se retira ensuite. | 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. |
| 14 Et Jacob dressa un monument de pierre au lieu où Dieu lui avait parlé; il offrit du vin dessus et y répandit de l'huile; | 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. |
| 15 Et il appela ce lieu Béthel. | 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel. |
| 16 Après qu'il fut parti de ce lieu-là, il vint au printemps sur le chemin qui mène à Ephrata, où Rachel étant en travail, | 16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. |
| 17 Et ayant grande peine à enfanter, elle se trouva en péril de sa vie. La sage-femme lui dit: Ne craignez point, car vous aurez encore ce fils. | 17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also. |
| 18 Mais Rachel, qui sentait que la violence de la douleur la faisait mourir, étant prête d'expirer, nomma son fils Bénoni, c'est-à-dire le fils de ma douleur; et le père le nomma Benjamin, c'est-à-dire fils de la droite. | 18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. |
| 19 Rachel mourut donc; et elle fut ensevelie dans le chemin qui conduit à la ville d'Ephrata, appelée depuis Bethléem. | 19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. |
| 20 Jacob dressa un monument de pierre sur son sépulcre. C'est ce monument de Rachel que l'on voit encore aujourd'hui. | 20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day. |
| 21 Après qu'il fut sorti de ce lieu, il dressa sa tente au delà de la Tour du troupeau. | 21 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar. |
| 22 Et lorsqu'il demeurait en ce lieu-là, Ruben dormit avec Bala, qui était femme de son père, et cette action ne put lui être cachée. Or Jacob avait douze fils. | 22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: |
| 23 Les fils de Lia étaient Ruben, l'aîné de tous, Siméon, Lévi, Juda, Issachar et Zabulon. | 23 The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun: |
| 24 Les fils de Rachel sont Joseph et Benjamin. | 24 The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin: |
| 25 Les fils de Bala, servante de Rachel, Dan et Nephthali. | 25 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali: |
| 26 Les fils de Zelpha, servante de Lia, Gad et Azer. Ce sont là les fils de Jacob, qu'il eut en Mésopotamie de Syrie. | 26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padan-aram. |
| 27 Jacob vint ensuite trouver Isaac, son père, à Mambré, à la ville d'Arbé, appelée depuis Hébron, où Abraham et Isaac avaient demeuré comme étrangers. | 27 And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. |
| 28 Isaac avait alors cent quatre-vingt ans accomplis. | 28 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. |
| 29 Et ses forces étant épuisées par son grand âge, il mourut. Ayant donc achevé sa carrière dans une extrême vieillesse, il fut réuni à son peuple, et ses enfants Esaü et Jacob l'ensevelirent. | 29 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. |
