| 4 Et il leur donna cet ordre. Voici la manière dont vous parlerez à Esaü: Mon seigneur, Jacob, votre frère, vous envoie dire ceci: J'ai demeuré comme étranger chez Laban, et j'y ai été jusqu'à ce jour. | 4 And he instructed them, saying: “You shall speak in this way to my lord Esau: ‘Your brother Jacob says these things: “I have sojourned with Laban, and I have been with him until the present day. |
| 5 J'ai des boeufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs et des servantes; et j'envoie maintenant vers mon seigneur, afin que je trouve grâce devant lui. | 5 I have oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and men servants, and women servants. And now I send an ambassador to my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ” |

| 7 A ces mots, Jacob eut une grande peur; et dans la frayeur dont il fut saisi, il divisa en deux troupes tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, et aussi les troupeaux, les brebis, les boeufs et les chameaux, | 7 Jacob was very afraid. And in his terror, he divided the people who were with him, likewise the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies, |
| 8 En disant: Si Esaü vient attaquer une des troupes, l'autre qui restera sera sauvée. | 8 saying: “If Esau goes to one company, and strikes it, the other company, which is left behind, will be saved.” |
| 9 Jacob dit ensuite: Dieu d'Abraham mon père, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Seigneur qui m'avez dit: Retournez en votre pays et au lieu de votre naissance, et Je vous comblerai de bienfaits; | 9 And Jacob said: “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me: ‘Return to your land, and to the place of your nativity, and I will do well for you.’ |

| 12 Vous m'avez promis de me combler de biens et de multiplier ma race comme le sable de la mer, dont la multitude est innombrable. | 12 You did say that you would do well by me, and that you would expand my offspring like the sand of the sea, which, because of its multitude, cannot be numbered.” |
| 13 Jacob ayant passé la nuit en ce même lieu, il sépara de tout ce qui était à lui ce qu'il avait destiné pour en faire présent à Esaü, son frère: | 13 And when he had slept there that night, he separated, from the things that he had, gifts for his brother Esau: |
| 14 Deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers; | 14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, |
| 15 Trente femelles de chameaux avec leurs petits, quarante vaches, vingt taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix ânons. | 15 thirty milking camels with their young, forty cows, and twenty bulls, twenty she-donkeys, and ten of their young. |
| 16 Il envoya séparément chacun de ces troupeaux, qu'il fit conduire par ses serviteurs, et il dit à ses hommes: Marchez toujours devant, et qu'il y ait de l'espace entre un troupeau et l'autre. | 16 And he sent them by the hands of his servants, each flock separately, and he said to his servants: “Pass before me, and let there be a space between flock and flock.” |
| 17 Il dit à celui qui marchait le premier: Si vous rencontrez Esaü, mon frère, et qu'il vous demande: A qui êtes-vous? ou bien: Où allez-vous? ou: A qui sont ces bêtes que vous menez? | 17 And he instructed the first, saying: “If you happen to meet my brother Esau, and he questions you: “Whose are you?” or, “Where are you going?” or, “Whose are these which follow you?” |
| 18 Vous lui répondrez: Elles sont à Jacob, votre serviteur qui les envoie pour présent à mon seigneur Esaü, et il vient lui-même après nous. | 18 you shall respond: “Your servant Jacob’s. He has sent them as a gift to my lord Esau. And he is also coming after us.” |
| 19 Il donna aussi le même ordre au second, au troisième, et à tous ceux qui conduisaient les troupeaux, en leur disant: Lorsque vous rencontrerez Esaü, vous lui direz la même chose. | 19 Similarly, he gave orders to the second, and the third, and to all who followed the flocks, saying: “Speak these same words to Esau, when you find him. |
| 20 Et vous ajouterez: Jacob, votre serviteur, vient aussi lui-même après nous. Car Jacob disait: Je l'apaiserai par les présents qui vont devant moi; et ensuite, quand je le verrai, peut-être me regardera-t-il favorablement. | 20 And you will add: ‘Your servant Jacob himself also follows after us, for he said: “I will appease him with the gifts that go ahead, and after this, I will see him; perhaps he will be gracious to me.” ’ ” |
| 21 Les présents marchèrent donc devant Jacob, et pour lui il demeura pendant cette nuit dans son camp. | 21 And so the gifts went before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp. |
| 22 Et s'étant levé de fort bonne heure, il prit ses deux femmes et leurs deux servantes, avec ses onze fils, et passa le gué du Jaboc. | 22 And when he had arisen early, he took his two wives, and the same number of handmaids, with his eleven sons, and he crossed over the ford of Jabbok. |
| 23 Après avoir fait passer tout ce qui était à lui, | 23 And having delivered over all the things that belonged to him, |
| 24 Il demeura seul en ce lieu-là. Et il parut en même temps un Homme qui lutta contre lui jusqu'au matin. | 24 he remained alone. And behold, a man wrestled with him until morning. |
| 25 Cet Homme, voyant qu'il ne pouvait le surmonter, lui toucha le nerf de la cuisse, qui se sécha aussitôt. | 25 And when he saw that he would not be able to overcome him, he touched the nerve of his thigh, and immediately it withered. |
| 26 Et Il lui dit: Laissez-moi aller, car l'aurore commence déjà à paraître. Jacob Lui répondit: Je ne Vous laisserai point aller que Vous ne m'ayez béni. | 26 And he said to him, “Release me, for now the dawn ascends.” He responded, “I will not release you, unless you bless me.” |
| 27 Cet Homme lui demanda: Comment vous appelez-vous? Il Lui répondit: Je m'appelle Jacob. | 27 Therefore he said, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob.” |
| 28 Et le même Homme ajouta: On ne vous nommera plus à l'avenir Jacob, mais Israël; car si vous avez été fort contre Dieu, combien le serez-vous davantage contre les hommes? | 28 But he said, “Your name will not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if you have been strong against God, how much more will you prevail against men?” |
| 29 Jacob lui fit ensuite cette demande: Dites-moi, je Vous prie, comment Vous Vous appelez. Il lui répondit: Pourquoi Me demandez-vous Mon nom? Et Il le bénit en ce même lieu. | 29 Jacob questioned him, “Tell me, by what name are you called?” He responded, “Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him in the same place. |
| 30 Jacob donna le nom de Phanuel à ce lieu-là, en disant: J'ai vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été sauvée. | 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.” |
| 31 Aussitôt qu'il eut passé ce lieu qu'il venait de nommer Phanuel, il vit le soleil qui se levait, mais il se trouva boiteux d'une jambe. | 31 And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he had crossed beyond Peniel. Yet in truth, he limped on his foot. |
| 32 C'est pour cette raison que jusqu'aujourd'hui les enfants d'Israël ne mangent point du nerf des bêtes, se souvenant de celui qui fut touché en la cuisse de Jacob, et qui demeura sans mouvement. | 32 For this reason, the sons of Israel, even to the present day, do not eat the nerve that withered in Jacob’s thigh, because he touched the nerve of his thigh and it was obstructed. |
