| 1 Le Seigneur apparut à Abraham en la vallée de Mambré, lorsqu'il était assis à la porte de sa tente dans la plus grande chaleur du jour. | 1 And the Lord appeared to him in the vale of Mambre as he was sitting at the door of his tent, in the very heat of the day. |
| 2 Abraham ayant levé les yeux, trois hommes lui apparurent, debout près de lui. Aussitôt qu'il les eut aperçus, il courut de la porte de sa tente au-devant d'eux, et se prosterna en terre. | |
| 3 Et il dit: Seigneur, si j'ai trouvé grâce devant Vos yeux, ne passez pas devant Votre serviteur sans Vous arrêter. | 3 And when he had lifted up his eyes, there appeared to him three men standing near him: and as soon as he saw them he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and adored down to the ground. |
| 4 Je Vous apporterai un peu d'eau pour laver Vos pieds, et Vous Vous reposerez sous cet arbre; | 4 And he said: Lord, if I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away from thy servant: |
| 5 Et je Vous servirai un peu de pain pour reprendre Vos forces; et Vous continuerez ensuite Votre chemin: car c'est pour cela que Vous êtes venus vers Votre serviteur. Ils lui répondirent: Faites ce que vous avez dit. | 5 But I will fetch a little water, and wash ye your feet, and rest ye under the tree. |
| 6 Abraham entra promptement dans sa tente, et dit à Sara: Pétrissez vite trois mesures de farine, et faites cuire des pains sous la cendre. | 6 And I will set a morsel of bread, and strengthen ye your heart, afterwards you shall pass on: for therefore are you come aside to your servant. And they said: Do as thou hast spoken. |
| 7 Il courut en même temps à son troupeau, et il y prit un veau très tendre et excellent qu'il donna à un serviteur, qui se hâta de le faire cuire. | 7 Abraham made haste into the tent to Sera, and said to her: Make haste, temper together three measures of flour, and make cakes upon the hearth. |
| 8 Ayant pris ensuite du beurre et du lait, avec le veau qu'il avait fait cuire, il le servit devant eux; et lui, cependant, se tenait debout auprès d'eux sous l'arbre. | 8 And he himself ran to the herd, and took from thence a calf very tender and very good, and gave it to a young man: who made haste and boiled it. |
| 9 Après qu'ils eurent mangé, ils lui dirent: Où est Sara votre femme? Il leur répondit: Elle est dans la tente. | 9 He took also butter and milk, and the calf which he had boiled, and set before them: but he stood by them under the tree. |
| 10 L'Un d'eux dit à Abraham: Je reviendrai vous voir dans un an, en ce même temps, et Sara votre femme aura un fils. Ce que Sara ayant entendu, elle se mit à rire derrière la porte de la tente. | 10 And when they had eaten, they said to him: Where is Sara thy wife? He answered: Lo, she is in the tent. |
| 11 Car ils étaient vieux tous deux et fort avancés en âge; et ce qui arrive d'ordinaire aux femmes avait cessé à Sara. | 11 And he said to him: I will return and come to thee at this time, life accompanying and Sara thy wife shall have a son. Which when Sara heard, she laughed behind the door of the tent. |
| 12 Elle rit donc secrètement, disant en elle-même: Après que je suis devenue vieille, et que mon seigneur est vieux aussi, penserais-je à user du mariage? | 12 Now they were both old, and far advanced in years, and it had ceased to be with Sara after the manner of women. |
| 13 Mais le Seigneur dit à Abraham: Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, en disant: Serait-il bien vrai que je puisse avoir un enfant, étant vieille comme je suis? | 13 And she laughed secretly, saying: After I am grown old |
| 14 Y a-t-il rien de difficile à Dieu? Je reviendrai auprès de vous, comme Je vous l'ai promis, dans un an, en ce même temps, et Sara aura un fils. | 14 And the Lord said to Abraham: Why did Sera laugh, saying: Shall I who am an old woman bear a child indeed ? |
| 15 Je n'ai point ri, répondit Sara; et elle le nia, parce qu'elle était tout épouvantée. Non, dit le Seigneur, cela n'est pas ainsi; car vous avez ri. | 15 Is there any thing hard to God? according to appointment I will return to thee at this same time, life accompanying, and Sara shall have a son. |
| 16 Ces hommes s'étant donc levés de ce lieu, ils tournèrent les yeux vers Sodome, et Abraham allait avec eux, les reconduisant. | 16 Sara denied, saying: I did not laugh: for she was afraid. But the Lord said, Nay: but thou didst laugh: |
| 17 Alors le Seigneur dit: Pourrais-Je cacher à Abraham ce que Je dois faire, | 17 And when the men rose up from thence, they turned their eyes towards Sodom: and Abraham walked with them, bringing them on the way. |
| 18 Puisqu'il doit être le chef d'un peuple très grand et très puissant, et que toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en lui? | 18 And the Lord said: Can I hide from Abraham what I am about to do: |
| 19 Car Je sais qu'il ordonnera à ses enfants, et à toute sa maison après lui, de garder la voie du Seigneur, et d'agir selon l'équité et la justice: afin que le Seigneur accomplisse en faveur d'Abraham tout ce qu'Il lui a promis. | 19 Seeing he shall become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed? |
| 20 Le Seigneur ajouta ensuite: Le cri de Sodome et de Gomorrhe s'augmente de plus en plus, et leur péché est monté jusqu'à son comble. | 20 For I know that he will command his children, and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord, and do judgment and justice: that for Abraham's sake the Lord may bring to effect all the things he hath spoken unto him. |
| 21 Je descendrai donc, et Je verrai si leurs oeuvres répondent à ce cri qui est venu jusqu'à Moi, pour savoir si cela est ainsi, ou si cela n'est pas. | 21 And the Lord said: The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha is multiplied, and their sin is become exceedingly grievous. |
| 22 Alors deux de ces hommes partirent de là, et s'en allèrent à Sodome: mais Abraham demeura encore devant le Seigneur. | 22 I will go down and see whether they have done according to the cry that is come to me: or whether it be not so, that I may know. |
| 23 Et s'approchant, il Lui dit: Perdrez-Vous le juste avec l'impie? | 23 And they turned themselves from thence, and went their way to Sodom: but Abraham as yet stood before the Lord. |
| 24 S'il y a cinquante justes dans cette ville, périront-ils avec tous les autres? Et ne pardonnerez-Vous pas plutôt à la ville à cause de cinquante justes, s'il s'y en trouvait autant? | 24 And drawing nigh he said: Wilt thou destroy the just with the wicked? |
| 25 Non, sans doute, Vous êtes bien éloigné d'agir de la sorte, de perdre le juste avec l'impie, et de confondre les bons avec les méchants. Cette conduite ne Vous convient en aucune sorte; et jugeant, comme Vous faites, toute la terre, Vous ne pourrez exercer un tel jugement. | 25 If there be fifty just men in the city, shall they perish withal? and wilt thou not spare that place for the sake of the fifty just, if they be therein? |
| 26 Le Seigneur lui répondit: Si Je trouve dans Sodome cinquante justes, Je pardonnerai à cause d'eux à toute la ville. | 26 Far be it from thee to do this thing, and to slay the just with the wicked, and for the just to be in like case as the wicked, this is not beseeming thee: thou who judgest all the earth, wilt not make this judgment. |
| 27 Abraham dit ensuite: Puisque j'ai commencé, je parlerai encore à mon Seigneur, quoique je ne sois que poussière et que cendre. | 27 And the Lord said to him: If I And in Sodom fifty just within the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake. |
| 28 S'il s'en fallait cinq qu'il y eût cinquante justes, perdriez-Vous toute la ville, parce qu'il n'y en aurait que quarante-cinq? Le Seigneur lui dit: Je ne perdrai point la ville, s'il s'y trouve quarante-cinq justes. | 28 And Abraham answered, and said: Seeing I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord, whereas I am dust and ashes. |
| 29 Abraham Lui dit encore: Mais s'il y avait quarante justes, que ferez-Vous? Je ne détruirai point la ville, si J'y trouve quarante justes. | 29 What if there be Ave less than fifty just persons? wilt thou for five and forty destroy the whole city? And he said: I will not destroy it, if I find five and forty. |
| 30 Je vous prie, Seigneur, dit Abraham, de ne pas trouver mauvais si je parle encore. Si Vous trouvez dans cette ville trente justes, que ferez-Vous? Si J'y en trouve trente, dit le Seigneur, Je ne la perdrai point. | 30 And again he said to him: But if forty be found there, what wilt thou do? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of forty. |
| 31 Puisque j'ai commencé, reprit Abraham, je parlerai encore à mon Seigneur: Et si Vous en trouviez vingt? Dieu lui dit: Je ne la perdrai point non plus s'il y en a vingt. | 31 Lord, saith he, be not angry, I beseech thee, if I speak: What if thirty shall be found there? He answered: I will not do it, if I And thirty there. |
| 32 Seigneur, ajouta Abraham, ne Vous fâchez pas, je Vous supplie, si je parle encore une fois. Et si Vous trouvez dix justes dans cette ville? Je ne la perdrai point, dit-Il, s'il y a dix justes. | 32 Seeing, saith he, I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord. What if twenty be found there? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty. |
| 33 Après que le Seigneur eut cessé de parler à Abraham, Il Se retira; et Abraham retourna chez lui. | 33 I beseech thee, saith he, be not angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more: What if tell should be found there ? And he said: I will not destroy it for the sake of ten. |
