1 Yahvé dit à Moïse dans les Steppes-de-Moab près du Jourdain face à Jéricho:	1 The LORD said to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho,
2 “Ordonne ceci aux Israélites: Sur votre part d’héritage, vous donnerez aux Lévites des villes pour y habiter ainsi que les pâturages qui entourent ces villes.	2 "Command the people of Israel, that they give to the Levites, from the inheritance of their possession, cities to dwell in; and you shall give to the Levites pasture lands round about the cities.
3 Ils auront ainsi des villes pour y habiter et des pâturages pour leur gros bétail, leurs animaux et tout ce qu’ils possèdent.	3 The cities shall be theirs to dwell in, and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle and for their livestock and for all their beasts.
4 Les pâturages s’étendront autour des villes que vous aurez données aux Lévites sur une distance de 1 000 coudées à partir des remparts.	4 The pasture lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits all round.
5 Les pâturages formeront un carré de 2 000 coudées à l’est, 2 000 coudées au sud, 2 000 coudées à l’ouest et 2 000 coudées au nord; la ville sera au milieu.	5 And you shall measure, outside the city, for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle; this shall belong to them as pasture land for their cities.
6 En plus des six villes de refuge que vous donnerez aux Lévites pour que les meurtriers puissent s’y mettre à l’abri, vous leur donnerez 42 autres villes.	6 The cities which you give to the Levites shall be the six cities of refuge, where you shall permit the manslayer to flee, and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities.
7 Le total des villes que vous donnerez aux lévites sera donc de 48 villes avec leurs pâturages.	7 All the cities which you give to the Levites shall be forty-eight, with their pasture lands.
8 Ces villes seront prises sur l’héritage des Israélites; vous en prendrez davantage à celui qui a beaucoup, moins à celui qui a moins. Chacun donnera aux Lévites des villes en proportion de son héritage.”	8 And as for the cities which you shall give from the possession of the people of Israel, from the larger tribes you shall take many, and from the smaller tribes you shall take few; each, in proportion to the inheritance which it inherits, shall give of its cities to the Levites."
9 Dieu dit à Moïse:	9 And the LORD said to Moses,
10 “Voici ce que tu diras aux Israélites: Lorsque vous aurez traversé le Jourdain pour entrer au pays de Canaan,	10 "Say to the people of Israel, When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11 vous choisirez des villes qui seront pour vous des villes de refuge. Celui qui aura tué quelqu’un involontairement pourra s’y réfugier.	11 then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person without intent may flee there.
12 Ces villes serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang versé, ainsi le meurtrier ne sera pas mis à mort avant d’avoir comparu en jugement devant la communauté.	12 The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.
13 Vous vous donnerez 6 villes de refuge.	13 And the cities which you give shall be your six cities of refuge.
14 Vous prendrez trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, et trois dans le pays de Canaan: elles deviendront des villes de refuge.	14 You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge.
15 Ces 6 villes serviront de refuge aux Israélites comme à l’étranger ou à celui qui habite au milieu de vous, pour que celui qui a tué quelqu’un involontairement puisse s’y retirer.	15 These six cities shall be for refuge for the people of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, that any one who kills any person without intent may flee there.
16 Voici plusieurs cas: Un homme avait dans la main un instrument de fer et il a frappé quelqu’un qui en est mort: cet homme est un meurtrier, il sera donc mis à mort.	16 "But if he struck him down with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
17 Un autre avait dans la main une pierre capable de causer la mort et il en a frappé quelqu’un qui en est mort: c’est encore un meurtrier, lui aussi sera mis à mort.	17 And if he struck him down with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
18 Un autre encore avait dans la main un objet de bois capable de causer la mort et il a frappé quelqu’un qui en est mort: c’est un meurtrier qui encore sera mis à mort.	18 Or if he struck him down with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
19 Le vengeur du sang mettra à mort le meurtrier, il pourra le tuer dès qu’il le rencontrera.	19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.
20 Un homme renverse quelqu’un par haine ou lui lance volontairement quelque chose et l’autre en meurt,	20 And if he stabbed him from hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died,
21 ou bien, par méchanceté, il frappe de la main une personne qui en meurt: celui qui a frappé sera mis à mort car c’est un meurtrier. Le vengeur du sang tuera le meurtrier dès qu’il le rencontrera.	21 or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meets him.
22 Mais voici un homme qui a renversé quelqu’un par hasard, sans méchanceté, ou encore il lui a jeté involontairement quelque chose,	22 "But if he stabbed him suddenly without enmity, or hurled anything on him without lying in wait,
23 ou encore il a fait tomber sur lui par mégarde une pierre capable de causer la mort. Et voici que l’autre en meurt bien qu’il ne soit pas son ennemi à qui il voulait du mal.	23 or used a stone, by which a man may die, and without seeing him cast it upon him, so that he died, though he was not his enemy, and did not seek his harm;
24 Dans ce cas la communauté décidera entre celui qui a frappé et le vengeur du sang, selon les lois.	24 then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood, in accordance with these ordinances;
25 La communauté libérera le meurtrier du vengeur du sang et le fera retourner dans la ville de refuge où il s’était enfui. Il y restera jusqu’à la mort du Grand Prêtre qui a été consacré avec l’huile sainte.	25 and the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, to which he had fled, and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.
26 Mais supposez que le meurtrier sort du territoire de la ville de refuge où il s’est enfui	26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the bounds of his city of refuge to which he fled,
27 et le vengeur du sang le rencontre hors du territoire de la ville de refuge. S’il tue le meurtrier, il ne sera pas coupable de meurtre,	27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slays the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood.
28 car l’autre devait demeurer dans la ville de refuge jusqu’à la mort du Grand Prêtre. Seulement après la mort du Grand Prêtre, le meurtrier pourra retourner à sa terre, à son héritage.	28 For the man must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.
29 Ces règles ont valeur de loi pour vous et pour vos descendants; elles seront valables dans tous les lieux que vous habiterez.	29 "And these things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30 Quand un homme en aura tué un autre, c’est sur la déposition de témoins qu’on mettra à mort le meurtrier, mais la déposition d’un seul témoin ne suffit pas pour une condamnation à mort.	30 If any one kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses; but no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.
31 Vous n’accepterez pas de rançon pour le rachat de la vie d’un meurtrier dont le crime mérite la mort: il sera mis à mort.	31 Moreover you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death; but he shall be put to death.
32 Vous n’accepterez pas de rançon pour permettre à quelqu’un qui s’est enfui dans une ville de refuge de revenir dans son pays avant la mort du Grand Prêtre.	32 And you shall accept no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the high priest.
33 Vous ne souillerez pas la terre où vous habiterez. Sachez que le sang souille la terre, et la seule réparation pour la terre où le sang a été versé est le sang de celui qui l’a versé.	33 You shall not thus pollute the land in which you live; for blood pollutes the land, and no expiation can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of him who shed it.
34 Tu ne souilleras pas la terre où tu habiteras et au milieu de laquelle je demeurerai, car je suis Yahvé qui demeure au milieu des Israélites.”	34 You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell in the midst of the people of Israel."
