| 1 Toute la communauté des Israélites quitta le désert de Sin; ils réglaient leurs étapes selon l’ordre de Yahvé. Ils vinrent camper à Réfidim, mais là le peuple n’avait pas d’eau à boire. | 1 All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. |
| 2 Le peuple se révolta contre Moïse, il disait: “Donne-nous de l’eau à boire!” Moïse leur dit: “Pourquoi vous révoltez-vous contre moi? Pourquoi tentez-vous Yahvé?” | 2 Therefore the people found fault with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you find fault with me? Why do you put the LORD to the proof?" |
| 3 Là, le peuple eut soif et murmura contre Moïse: “Pourquoi, dit-il, nous as-tu fait sortir d’Égypte? Est-ce pour nous faire mourir de soif, nous, nos fils et nos troupeaux?” | 3 But the people thirsted there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?" |
| 4 Alors Moïse cria vers Yahvé: “Que ferai-je pour ce peuple? Encore un peu et ils vont me lapider.” | 4 So Moses cried to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." |
| 5 Yahvé répondit à Moïse: “Passe en avant du peuple! Prends avec toi quelques anciens d’Israël, et va. Tu auras en main le bâton avec lequel tu as frappé le Nil, | 5 And the LORD said to Moses, "Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand the rod with which you struck the Nile, and go. |
| 6 et moi, je vais me poster devant toi sur le rocher de l’Horeb. Tu frapperas le rocher, il en sortira de l’eau et le peuple boira.” C’est ce que fit Moïse sous les yeux des anciens d’Israël. | 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. |
| 7 On appela ce lieu: Massa (c’est-à-dire: Tentation) et Mériba (c’est-à-dire: Révolte), parce que les Israélites s’étaient révoltés et qu’ils avaient tenté Yahvé en disant: “Dieu est-il vraiment au milieu de nous?” | 7 And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the faultfinding of the children of Israel, and because they put the LORD to the proof by saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?" |
| 8 Quand on était à Réfidim, Amalec vint combattre Israël. | 8 Then came Amalek and fought with Israel at Rephidim. |
| 9 Moïse dit à Josué: “Trouve-nous des hommes pour aller se battre contre Amalec. Demain matin, j’irai me tenir au sommet de la montagne et je tiendrai à la main le bâton de Dieu.” | 9 And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose for us men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand." |
| 10 Josué fit donc ce que Moïse lui avait dit pour combattre Amalec, tandis que Moïse, Aaron et Hour montaient au sommet de la montagne. | 10 So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. |
| 11 Tant que Moïse élevait ses mains vers le ciel, Israël l’emportait, mais quand il laissait retomber ses mains, Amalec était le plus fort. | 11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. |
| 12 Les mains de Moïse se fatiguaient: alors on prit une pierre et on la plaça sous lui. Moïse s’assit dessus pendant qu’Aaron et Hour lui soutenaient les mains, l’un d’un côté, l’autre de l’autre. Ainsi ses mains restèrent levées jusqu’au coucher du soleil, | 12 But Moses' hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. |
| 13 et Josué fit un massacre d’Amalec et de son peuple. | 13 And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. |
| 14 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Écris cela dans le Livre pour qu’on s’en souvienne. Et tu diras à Josué: Plus personne sous le ciel ne se souviendra d’Amalec.” | 14 And the LORD said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven." |
| 15 Moïse construisit un autel et lui donna ce nom: “Yahvé est mon étendard.” Et il dit: “En vos mains l’étendard de Yahvé! Yahvé est en guerre contre Amalec de génération en génération.” | 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD is my banner, |
| 16 saying, "A hand upon the banner of the LORD! The LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation." |
