| 5 Al tempo di Erode, re della Giudea, c'era un sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia, che aveva per moglie una donna discendente da Aronne, chiamata Elisabetta. | 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. |
| 6 Ambedue erano giusti agli occhi di Dio, osservando in modo irreprensibile tutti i comandamenti e i precetti del Signore, | 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. |
| 7 ma non avevano figli: Elisabetta infatti era sterile e tutti e due erano di età avanzata. | 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. |
| 8 Avvenne però che, mentre egli esercitava le sue funzioni sacerdotali davanti a Dio nel turno della sua classe, | 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, |
| 9 gli toccò in sorte, secondo l'usanza del servizio sacerdotale, di entrare nel santuario per offrire l'incenso. | 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. |
| 10 Intanto tutto il popolo stava fuori in preghiera, nell'ora dell'offerta dell'incenso. | 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. |
| 11 Gli apparve allora un angelo del Signore, stando alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso. | 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. |
| 12 Al vederlo Zaccaria fu sconvolto e preso da timore. | 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. |
| 13 Ma l'angelo gli disse: "Non temere, Zaccaria, la tua preghiera è stata accolta: infatti tua moglie Elisabetta darà alla luce un figlio e tu lo chiamerai Giovanni. | 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. |
| 14 Sarà per te motivo di gioia e di esultanza, anzi saranno in molti a rallegrarsi per la sua nascita. | 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; |
| 15 Egli infatti sarà grande agli occhi del Signore; non berrà né vino né bevande inebrianti, ma fin dal seno di sua madre sarà riempito di Spirito Santo. | 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. |
| 16 Ricondurrà molti figli di Israele al Signore, loro Dio. | 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, |
| 17 Egli stesso andrà innanzi a Lui con lo spirito e la forza di Elia, per riportare i cuori dei padri verso i figli e i ribelli alla sapienza dei giusti, per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto". | 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." |
| 18 Ma Zaccaria disse all'angelo: "In che modo potrò conoscere questo? Io infatti sono vecchio e mia moglie è avanti negli anni". | 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." |
| 19 Gli rispose l'angelo: "Io sono Gabriele e sto davanti a Dio. Sono stato mandato a parlarti e portarti questa gioiosa notizia. | 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. |
| 20 Ecco, tu diventerai muto e non potrai più parlare fino al giorno in cui avverranno queste cose, perché non hai creduto a ciò che ti ho detto; ma a suo tempo tutto si realizzerà". | 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." |
| 21 Intanto il popolo attendeva Zaccaria e si meravigliava per il fatto che egli indugiava troppo nel santuario. | 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. |
| 22 Quando uscì non poteva parlare con loro; compresero allora che nel santuario egli aveva avuto una visione. Faceva loro dei cenni, ma non poteva parlare. | 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb. |
| 23 Trascorso il periodo del suo servizio, se ne tornò a casa sua. | 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. |
| 24 Dopo quei giorni sua moglie Elisabetta concepì, ma si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi, dicendo: | 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, |
| 25 "Ecco ciò che ha fatto per me il Signore in questi giorni nei quali ha volto su di me lo sguardo, per togliere la mia vergogna tra gli uomini". | 25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." |
| 26 Al sesto mese Dio mandò l'angelo Gabriele in una città della Galilea chiamata Nàzaret, | 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, |
| 27 a una vergine sposa di un uomo di nome Giuseppe della casa di Davide: il nome della vergine era Maria. | 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. |
| 28 Entrò da lei e le disse: "Salve, piena di grazia, il Signore è con te". | 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" |
| 29 Per tali parole ella rimase turbata e si domandava che cosa significasse un tale saluto. | 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. |
| 30 Ma l'angelo le disse: "Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. | 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. |
| 31 Ecco, tu concepirai nel grembo e darai alla luce un figlio. Lo chiamerai Gesù. | 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. |
| 32 Egli sarà grande e sarà chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo; il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide, suo padre, | 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, |
| 33 e regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno e il suo regno non avrà mai fine". | 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." |
| 34 Allora Maria disse all'angelo: "Come avverrà questo, poiché io non conosco uomo?". | 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" |
| 35 L'angelo le rispose: "Lo Spirito Santo scenderà sopra di te e la potenza dell'Altissimo ti coprirà con la sua ombra; perciò quello che nascerà sarà chiamato santo, Figlio di Dio. | 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. |
| 36 Ed ecco, Elisabetta, tua parente, ha concepito anche lei un figlio nella sua vecchiaia, e lei che era ritenuta sterile è già al sesto mese; | 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. |
| 37 nessuna cosa infatti è impossibile a Dio". | 37 For with God nothing will be impossible." |
| 38 Disse allora Maria: "Ecco la serva del Signore; si faccia di me come hai detto tu". E l'angelo si allontanò da lei. | 38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. |
| 39 In quei giorni Maria, messasi in viaggio, si recò in fretta verso la regione montagnosa, in una città di Giuda. | 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, |
| 40 Entrò nella casa di Zaccaria e salutò Elisabetta. | 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. |
| 41 Ed ecco che, appena Elisabetta ebbe udito il saluto di Maria, le balzò in seno il bambino. Elisabetta fu ricolma di Spirito Santo | 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit |
| 42 ed esclamò a gran voce: "Benedetta tu fra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo seno. | 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! |
| 43 Ma perché mi accade questo, che venga da me la madre del mio Signore? | 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? |
| 44 Ecco, infatti, che appena il suono del tuo saluto è giunto alle mie orecchie, il bambino m'è balzato in seno per la gioia. | 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. |
| 45 E benedetta colei che ha creduto al compimento di ciò che le è stato detto dal Signore". | 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." |
| 46 E Maria disse: "L'anima mia magnifica il Signore | 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, |
| 47 e il mio spirito esulta in Dio, mio Salvatore | 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, |
| 48 perché ha considerato l'umiltà della sua serva. D'ora in poi tutte le generazioni mi chiameranno beata. | 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; |
| 49 Perché grandi cose m'ha fatto il Potente, Santo è il suo nome, | 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. |
| 50 e la sua misericordia di generazione in generazione va a quelli che lo temono. | 50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. |
| 51 Ha messo in opera la potenza del suo braccio, ha disperso i superbi con i disegni da loro concepiti. | 51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, |
| 52 Ha rovesciato i potenti dai troni e innalzato gli umili. | 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; |
| 53 Ha ricolmato di beni gli affamati e rimandato i ricchi a mani vuote. | 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. |
| 54 Ha soccorso Israele, suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia, | 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, |
| 55 come aveva promesso ai nostri padri, a favore di Abramo e della sua discendenza, per sempre". | 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." |
| 56 Maria rimase con lei circa tre mesi, poi ritornò a casa sua. | 56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. |
| 57 Giunse intanto per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire e diede alla luce un figlio. | 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. |
| 58 I vicini e i parenti udirono che il Signore era stato grande nella sua misericordia con lei, e si congratulavano con lei. | 58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. |
| 59 All'ottavo giorno vennero a circoncidere il bambino. Lo volevano chiamare Zaccaria, il nome di suo padre. | 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father, |
| 60 Ma sua madre intervenne dicendo: "No, ma si chiamerà Giovanni". | 60 but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John." |
| 61 Le risposero: "Non c'è nessuno della tua parentela che si chiami con questo nome". | 61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." |
| 62 Allora domandavano con cenni a suo padre come voleva che si chiamasse. | 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. |
| 63 Egli chiese una tavoletta e vi scrisse: "Il suo nome è Giovanni", e tutti ne furono meravigliati. | 63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled. |
| 64 In quel medesimo istante gli si aprì la bocca e gli si sciolse la lingua: parlava benedicendo Dio. | 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. |
| 65 Tutti i loro vicini furono presi da timore e in tutta la regione montagnosa della Giudea si discorreva di tutte queste cose. | 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; |
| 66 Coloro che le sentivano le tenevano in cuor loro e si domandavano: "Che sarà mai di questo bambino?". La mano del Signore infatti era con lui. | 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. |
| 67 Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ricolmo di Spirito Santo e si mise a profetare: | 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, |
| 68 "Benedetto il Signore, Dio di Israele, perché ha visitato e redento il suo popolo, | 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, |
| 69 per noi ha suscitato una potente salvezza nella casa di Davide, suo servo, | 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, |
| 70 come aveva promesso per bocca dei suoi santi profeti d'un tempo: | 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, |
| 71 salvezza dai nostri nemici e dalle mani di tutti quelli che ci odiano. | 71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; |
| 72 Così egli ha concesso misericordia ai nostri padri e s'è ricordato della sua santa alleanza, | 72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, |
| 73 del giuramento fatto ad Abramo, nostro padre, di concedere a noi, | 73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, |
| 74 liberati dalle mani dei nemici, di servirlo senza timore, | 74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, |
| 75 in santità e giustizia dinanzi a lui per tutti i nostri giorni. | 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. |
| 76 E tu, bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell'Altissimo perché andrai innanzi al Signore a preparargli la via, | 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, |
| 77 per dare al suo popolo la conoscenza della salvezza per la remissione dei loro peccati, | 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, |
| 78 grazie alla bontà misericordiosa del nostro Dio per cui verrà a visitarci un sole dall'alto, | 78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high |
| 79 per illuminare quelli che stanno nelle tenebre e nell'ombra di morte, per guidare i nostri passi sulla via della pace". | 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." |
| 80 Il fanciullo intanto cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito. Visse in regioni deserte, fino al giorno in cui doveva manifestarsi ad Israele. | 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel. |
