1 So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?	1 Qual vantaggio secondo la carne, direm noi, ha dunque ottenuto Abramo nostro padre?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.	2 Se Abramo è stato giustificato dalle opere, egli ha di che gloriarsi, ma non dinanzi a Dio.
3 For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”	3 Infatti che dice la Scrittura? « Abramo credette a Dio, e gli fu imputato a giustizia ».
4 But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.	4 Or a colui che lavora, la mercede non è computata come grazia, ma come cosa dovuta;
5 Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.	5 invece a colui che non opera, ma crede in colui che giustifica l'empio, la fede gli è imputata a giustizia, secondo il proponimento della grazia di Dio.
6 Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:	6 Così pure anche David proclama beato l'uomo al quale Dio imputa la giustizia, indipendentemente dalle opere:
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.	7 Beati coloro ai quali sono perdonate le iniquità, i peccati dei quali sono stati ricoperti.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”	8 Beato l'uomo a cui Dio non imputa il peccato.
9 Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.	9 Questa beatitudine è soltanto per i circoncisi, od anche per gli incirconcisi? Siccome diciamo che ad Abramo la fede fu imputata a giustizia,
10 But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.	10 in che modo gli fu dunque imputata? Quando era circonciso, o quando era incirconciso? Non dopo, ma avanti la circoncisione.
11 For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,	11 É il segno della circoncisione che poi ricevette, fu il sigillo della giustizia ottenuta per la fede, prima della circoncisione, per essere il padre di tutti i credenti incirconcisi, affinchè (la fede) sia imputata anche ad essi a giustizia,
12 and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.	12 e padre dei circoncisi, di quelli che non sono soltanto circoncisi, ma seguono anche le orme della fede che il nostro padre Abramo aveva quand'ora incirconciso.
13 For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.	13 Difatti non in virtù della legge fu promessa ad Abramo l'eredità dell'universo, ma per la giustizia della fede.
14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.	14 Or se eredi son quelli che han la legge, è vana la fede, è annullata la promessa,
15 For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.	15 perchè la legge produce l'ira, mentre dove non c'è legge non c'è neppure trasgressione.
16 Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,	16 Deve dipendere adunque dalla fede la promossa, affinchè sia gratuita e assicurata a tutta la discendenza, non soltanto a quella che è dalla legge, ma anche a quella che è dalla fede di Abramo, il quale è padre di noi tutti,
17 in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”	17 (secondo quello che sta scritto: Ti ho costituito padre di molte nazioni), padre davanti a Dio, nel quale credette, che fa rivivere i morti e chiama le cose che non sono come so esistessero.
18 And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”	18 Sperando contro ogni speranza, Abramo credette in modo da divenire padre di molte nazioni, secondo quello che gli era stato dotto: Tale sarà la tua discendenza.
19 And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.	19 Egli, senza vacillar nella fede, non guardò al suo corpo impotente (aveva quasi cent'anni), nè al seno di Sara infecondo;
20 And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,	20 ma dinanzi alla promessa di Dio non esitò diffidando; reso invece forte dalla fede, diè gloria a Dio,
21 knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.	21 assolutamente convinto che è sì potente da effettuare qualunque cosa abbia promossa.
22 And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.	22 Ecco perchè (la sua fede) gli fu imputata a giustizia.
23 Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,	23 Or non per lui soltanto è scritto che gli fu imputata a giustizia,
24 but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,	24 ma anche per noi, ai quali sarà imputata la fede in Colui che ha suscitato da morte Gesù Cristo Signor nostro,
25 who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.	25 il quale è stato dato a morte pei nostri peccati e risuscitò per la nostra giustificazione.
