CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?1 Τι λοιπον θελομεν ειπει οτι απηλαυσεν Αβρααμ ο πατηρ ημων κατα σαρκα;
For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.2 Διοτι εαν ο Αβρααμ εδικαιωθη εκ των εργων, εχει καυχημα, αλλ' ουχι ενωπιον του Θεου.
For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”3 Επειδη τι λεγει η γραφη; Και επιστευσεν Αβρααμ εις τον Θεον, και ελογισθη εις αυτον εις δικαιοσυνην.
But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.4 Εις δε τον εργαζομενον ο μισθος δεν λογιζεται ως χαρις, αλλ' ως χρεος?
Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.5 εις τον μη εργαζομενον ομως, πιστευοντα δε εις τον δικαιουντα τον ασεβη, η πιστις αυτου λογιζεται εις δικαιοσυνην,
Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:6 καθως και ο Δαβιδ λεγει τον μακαρισμον του ανθρωπου, εις τον οποιον ο Θεος λογιζεται δικαιοσυνην, χωρις εργων?
“Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.7 Μακαριοι εκεινοι, των οποιων συνεχωρηθησαν αι ανομιαι και των οποιων εσκεπασθησαν αι αμαρτιαι?
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”8 μακαριος ο ανθρωπος, εις τον οποιον ο Κυριος δεν θελει λογιζεσθαι αμαρτιαν.
Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.9 Ουτος λοιπον ο μακαρισμος γινεται δια τους περιτετμημενους η και δια τους απεριτμητους; διοτι λεγομεν οτι η πιστις ελογισθη εις τον Αβρααμ εις δικαιοσυνην.
But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.10 Πως λοιπον ελογισθη; οτε ητο εν περιτομη η εν ακροβυστια; Ουχι εν περιτομη αλλ' εν ακροβυστια?
For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,11 και ελαβε το σημειον της περιτομης, σφραγιδα της δικαιοσυνης της εκ πιστεως της εν τη ακροβυστια, δια να ηναι αυτος πατηρ παντων των πιστευοντων ενω υπαρχουσιν εν τη ακροβυστια, δια να λογισθη και εις αυτους η δικαιοσυνη,
and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.12 και πατηρ της περιτομης, ουχι μονον εις τους περιτετμημενους, αλλα και εις τους περιπατουντας εις τα ιχνη της πιστεως του πατρος ημων Αβρααμ της εν τη ακροβυστια.
For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.13 Επειδη η επαγγελια προς τον Αβρααμ η προς το σπερμα αυτου, οτι εμελλε να ηναι κληρονομος του κοσμου, δεν εγεινε δια του νομου, αλλα δια της δικαιοσυνης της εκ πιστεως.
For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.14 Διοτι εαν ηναι κληρονομοι οι εκ του νομου, η πιστις εματαιωθη και κατηργηθη η επαγγελια?
For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.15 επειδη ο νομος επιφερει οργην? διοτι οπου δεν υπαρχει νομος, ουδε παραβασις υπαρχει.
Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,16 Δια τουτο εκ πιστεως η κληρονομια, δια να ηναι κατα χαριν, ωστε η επαγγελια να ηναι βεβαια εις απαν το σπερμα, ουχι μονον το εκ του νομου, αλλα και το εκ της πιστεως του Αβρααμ, οστις ειναι πατηρ παντων ημων,
in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”17 καθως ειναι γεγραμμενον, οτι πατερα πολλων εθνων σε κατεστησα, ενωπιον του Θεου εις τον οποιον επιστευσε, του ζωοποιουντος τους νεκρους και καλουντος τα μη οντα ως οντα?
And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”18 οστις καιτοι μη εχων ελπιδα επιστευσεν επ' ελπιδι, οτι εμελλε να γεινη πατηρ πολλων εθνων κατα το λαληθεν? Ουτω θελει εισθαι το σπερμα σου?
And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.19 και μη ασθενησας κατα την πιστιν δεν εσυλλογισθη το σωμα αυτου οτι ητο ηδη νενεκρωμενον, εκατονταετης περιπου ων, και την νεκρωσιν της μητρας της Σαρρας?
And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,20 ουδε εδιστασεν εις την επαγγελιαν του Θεου δια της απιστιας, αλλ' ενεδυναμωθη εις την πιστιν, δοξασας τον Θεον,
knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.21 και πεποιθως οτι εκεινο, το οποιον υπεσχεθη, ειναι δυνατος και να εκτελεση.
And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.22 Δια τουτο και ελογισθη εις αυτον εις δικαιοσυνην.
Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,23 Δεν εγραφη δε δι' αυτον μονον, οτι ελογισθη εις αυτον,
but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,24 αλλα και δι' ημας, εις τους οποιους μελλει να λογισθη, τους πιστευοντας εις τον αναστησαντα εκ νεκρων Ιησουν τον Κυριον ημων,
who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.25 οστις παρεδοθη δια τας αμαρτιας ημων και ανεστη δια την δικαιωσιν ημων.
