In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 In quel tempo, Erode il tetrarca sentì il gran parlare che si faceva di Gesù,
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 e disse ai suoi cortigiani: Costui è Giovanni il Battista: è risuscitato, e per questo le virtù dei miracoli operano in lui.
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Infatti Erode, avendo fatto arrestare Giovanni, lo aveva legato e messo in carcere a cagione di Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello.
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 Perché Giovanni gli diceva: Non t'è lecito di tenerla.
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 E, volendo ucciderlo, temè il popolo che lo teneva come profeta.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 Ma nel giorno natalizio di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade ballò nel convito e piacque ad Erode,
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 che le promise con giuramento di darle qualunque cosa gli avesse domandato.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Ed essa istigata dalla madre, gli disse: Dammi qui in un bacile, la testa di Giovanni Battista.
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 E il re si rattristò, ma per riguardo al giuramento ed ai convitati, ordinò che le fosse data,
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 e mandò a far decapitare Giovanni nel carcere.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 E la testa di lui fu portata in un bacile e data alla fanciulla che la portò a sua madre.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 E venuti i discepoli di Giovanni presero il di lui corpo e lo seppellirono e poi si recarono a darne la nuova a Gesù.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 Udito questo, Gesù, montato in barca, si ritirò in un luogo deserto ed appartato, e le turbe, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 E nell'uscire di barca, vide gran folla; ne ebbe compassione e ne guarì gli infermi.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Or facendosi sera gli si accostarono i suoi discepoli e gli dissero: Il luogo è deserto e l'ora è già tarda; licenzia il popolo, affinchè vadano per i villaggi a comprarsi il cibo.
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Ma Gesù disse loro: Non occorre che se ne vadano: date voi ad essi da mangiare.
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Gli risposero: Qui non abbiamo che cinque pani e due pesci.
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 Ed egli disse loro: Portatemeli qua.
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 Ed avendo ordinato alle turbe di mettersi a sedere sull'erba, presi i cinque pani e i due pesci, alzò gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse e spezzò e dette ai suoi discepoli, e i discepoli alla gente.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 E tutti mangiarono e si saziarono e dei pezzi avanzati ne portarono via dodici panieri pieni.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Or a mangiare vi eran cinque mila persone, senza contare le donne e i fanciulli.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 E subito Gesù obbligò i suoi discepoli a montare in barca e a precederlo sull'altra riva mentre egli licenzierebbe le turbe.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 E licenziatele, salì solo sul monte a pregare. E fattosi sera, era solo in quel luogo.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Frattanto la barca era inmezzo al mare sbattuta dai flutti perchè il vento era contrario.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 Ma, alla quarta vigilia della notte, Gesù andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 E i discepoli, quando lo videro camminare sul mare, si spaventarono e dicevano: E' un fantasma. E dalla paura, gridarono.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 E subito Gesù, parlando loro disse: Rassicuratevi, son io; non temete!
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Ma Pietro rispose: Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire a te sulle acque.
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Ed egli: Vieni. E Pietro, sceso di barca, cominciò a camminare sulle acque, per andar da Gesù.
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 Ma, vedendo il vento gagliardo, s'impaurì e, cominciando ad affondare gridò: Signore, salvami!
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 E subito Gesù, stesa la mano, lo afferrò, dicendogli: Uomo di poca fede, perchè hai dubitato?
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 E montati che furono in barca il vento cessò.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 E allora quelli che erano nella barca, andarono ad adorarlo, dicendo: Tu sei veramente Figlio di Dio.
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 Passati all'altra riva, andarono nella terra di Genezaret.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 E la gente di quel luogo, come l'ebbe riconosciuto, mandò ad avvisare per tutto il paese all'intorno. E gli presentarono tutti gli infermi,
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 e lo pregavano di poter toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e quanti lo toccarono furono guariti.
