Matthew 14

1 In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.	1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
2 And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”	2 and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."
3 For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.	3 Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
4 For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”	4 for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
5 And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.	5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.
6 Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.	6 But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod
7 And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.	7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
8 But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”	8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
9 And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.	9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,
10 And he sent and beheaded John in prison.	10 and he had John beheaded in the prison.
11 And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.	11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
12 And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.	12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.	13 When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
14 And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.	14 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
15 And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”	15 When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."
16 But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”	16 (Jesus) said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves."
17 They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”	17 But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here."
18 He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”	18 Then he said, "Bring them here to me,"
19 And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.	19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.	20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full.
21 Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.	21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
22 And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.	22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.	23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.
24 But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.	24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
25 Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.	25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.
26 And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.	26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear.
27 And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”	27 At once (Jesus) spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
28 Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”	28 Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."
29 And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.	29 He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
30 Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”	30 But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
31 And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”	31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.	32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”	33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."
34 And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.	34 After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
35 And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.	35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick
36 And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.	36 and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.
