CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 Κατ' εκεινον τον καιρον ηκουσεν Ηρωδης ο τετραρχης την φημην του Ιησου
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 και ειπε προς τους δουλους αυτου?
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Διοτι ο Ηρωδης συλλαβων τον Ιωαννην εδεσεν αυτον και εβαλεν εν φυλακη δια Ηρωδιαδα την γυναικα Φιλιππου του αδελφου αυτου.
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 Διοτι ελεγε προς αυτον ο Ιωαννης?
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 Και θελων να θανατωση αυτον εφοβηθη τον οχλον, διοτι ειχον αυτον ως προφητην.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 Οτε δε ετελουντο τα γενεθλια του Ηρωδου, εχορευσεν η θυγατηρ της Ηρωδιαδος εν τω μεσω και ηρεσεν εις τον Ηρωδην?
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 οθεν μεθ' ορκου ωμολογησεν εις αυτην να δωση ο, τι αν ζητηση.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Η δε,
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 Και ελυπηθη ο βασιλευς, δια τους ορκους ομως και τους συγκαθημενους προσεταξε να δοθη,
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 και πεμψας απεκεφαλισε τον Ιωαννην εν τη φυλακη.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 Και εφερθη η κεφαλη αυτου επι πινακι και εδοθη εις το κορασιον, και εφερεν αυτην προς την μητερα αυτης.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 Και προσελθοντες οι μαθηται αυτου εσηκωσαν το σωμα και εθαψαν αυτο, και ελθοντες απηγγειλαν τουτο εις τον Ιησουν.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 Και ακουσας ο Ιησους ανεχωρησεν εκειθεν εν πλοιω εις ερημον τοπον κατ' ιδιαν?
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 Και οτε ο Ιησους, ειδε πολυν οχλον και εσπλαγχνισθη δι' αυτους και εθεραπευσε τους αρρωστους αυτων.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Οτε δε εγεινεν εσπερα, προσηλθον προς αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου, λεγοντες?
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Ο δε Ιησους ειπε προς αυτους?
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Οι δε λεγουσι προς αυτον?
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 Ο δε ειπε?
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 Και προσταξας τους οχλους να καθησωσιν επι τα χορτα, και λαβων τους πεντε αρτους και τα δυο οψαρια, αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ευλογησε, και κοψας εδωκεν εις τους μαθητας τους αρτους, οι δε μαθηται εις τους οχλους.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 Και εφαγον παντες και εχορτασθησαν, και εσηκωσαν το περισσευμα των κλασματων, δωδεκα κοφινους πληρεις.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 οι δε τρωγοντες ησαν εως πεντακισχιλιοι ανδρες, εκτος γυναικων και παιδιων.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Και ευθυς ηναγκασεν ο Ιησους τους μαθητας αυτου να εμβωσιν εις το πλοιον και να υπαγωσι προ αυτου εις το περαν, εωσου απολυση τους οχλους.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 Και αφου απελυσε τους οχλους, ανεβη εις το ορος κατ' ιδιαν δια να προσευχηθη.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Το δε πλοιον ητο ηδη εν τω μεσω της θαλασσης, βασανιζομενον υπο των κυματων?
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 Εν δε τη τεταρτη φυλακη της νυκτος υπηγε προς αυτους ο Ιησους, περιπατων επι την θαλασσαν.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 Και ιδοντες αυτον οι μαθηται επι την θαλασσαν περιπατουντα, εταραχθησαν, λεγοντες οτι φαντασμα ειναι, και απο του φοβου εκραξαν.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 Ευθυς δε ελαλησε προς αυτους ο Ιησους λεγων?
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Αποκριθεις δε προς αυτον ο Πετρος ειπε?
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Ο δε ειπεν, Ελθε.
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 Βλεπων ομως τον ανεμον δυνατον εφοβηθη, και αρχισας να καταποντιζηται, εκραξε λεγων?
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 Και ευθυς ο Ιησους εκτεινας την χειρα επιασεν αυτον και λεγει προς αυτον? Ολιγοπιστε, εις τι εδιστασας;
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 Και αφου εισηλθον εις το πλοιον, επαυσεν ο ανεμος?
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 οι δε εν τω πλοιω ελθοντες προσεκυνησαν αυτον, λεγοντες?
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 Και διαπερασαντες ηλθον εις την γην Γεννησαρετ.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 Και γνωρισαντες αυτον οι ανθρωποι του τοπου εκεινου, απεστειλαν εις ολην την περιχωρον εκεινην και εφεραν προς αυτον παντας τους πασχοντας,
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 και παρεκαλουν αυτον να εγγισωσι μονον το ακρον του ιματιου αυτου?
