CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
O death, how bitter is the memory of you: to a man who has peace in his substance,1 ω θανατε ως πικρον σου το μνημοσυνον εστιν ανθρωπω ειρηνευοντι εν τοις υπαρχουσιν αυτου ανδρι απερισπαστω και ευοδουμενω εν πασιν και ετι ισχυοντι επιδεξασθαι τροφην
to a quiet man, and to him whose ways are directed properly in all things, and who still has the strength to take nourishment.2 ω θανατε καλον σου το κριμα εστιν ανθρωπω επιδεομενω και ελασσουμενω ισχυι εσχατογηρω και περισπωμενω περι παντων και απειθουντι και απολωλεκοτι υπομονην
O death, your judgment is good to the indigent man, and to him whose strength has diminished,3 μη ευλαβου κριμα θανατου μνησθητι προτερων σου και εσχατων
who is failing due to old age, and who is anxious about all things, and to the unbelieving man who has lost patience.4 τουτο το κριμα παρα κυριου παση σαρκι και τι απαναινη εν ευδοκια υψιστου ειτε δεκα ειτε εκατον ειτε χιλια ετη ουκ εστιν εν αδου ελεγμος ζωης
Do not choose to dread the judgment of death. Remember the things that occurred before you, and the things that will occur after you. This judgment is from the Lord upon all flesh.5 τεκνα βδελυρα γινεται τεκνα αμαρτωλων και συναναστρεφομενα παροικιαις ασεβων
And what will happen to you is well-pleasing to the Most High, whether in ten, or one hundred, or one thousand years.6 τεκνων αμαρτωλων απολειται κληρονομια και μετα του σπερματος αυτων ενδελεχιει ονειδος
For death is no indictment of life.7 πατρι ασεβει μεμψεται τεκνα οτι δι' αυτον ονειδισθησονται
The sons of sinners, and those who pass their time in the manner of the houses of the impious, become sons of abominations.8 ουαι υμιν ανδρες ασεβεις οιτινες εγκατελιπετε νομον θεου υψιστου
The inheritance of the sons of sinners will perish, and continual disgrace will be with their offspring.9 και εαν γεννηθητε εις καταραν γεννηθησεσθε και εαν αποθανητε εις καταραν μερισθησεσθε
The sons of an impious father will complain, for they are in disgrace because of him.10 παντα οσα εκ γης εις γην απελευσεται ουτως ασεβεις απο καταρας εις απωλειαν
Woe to you, impious men, who have abandoned the law of the Most High Lord!11 πενθος ανθρωπων εν σωμασιν αυτων ονομα δε αμαρτωλων ουκ αγαθον εξαλειφθησεται
And when you are born, you will be born into a curse; and when you die, your portion will be in a curse.12 φροντισον περι ονοματος αυτο γαρ σοι διαμενει η χιλιοι μεγαλοι θησαυροι χρυσιου
All things that are from the earth shall return to the earth. Similarly, the impious will proceed from a curse unto perdition.13 αγαθης ζωης αριθμος ημερων και αγαθον ονομα εις αιωνα διαμενει
The grieving of men is in their body, but the name of the impious will be wiped away.14 παιδειαν εν ειρηνη συντηρησατε τεκνα σοφια δε κεκρυμμενη και θησαυρος αφανης τις ωφελεια εν αμφοτεροις
Have concern for your good name. For this will continue with you, more so than a thousand precious and great treasures.15 κρεισσων ανθρωπος αποκρυπτων την μωριαν αυτου η ανθρωπος αποκρυπτων την σοφιαν αυτου
A good life has its number of days, but a good name will continue forever.16 τοιγαρουν εντραπητε επι τω ρηματι μου ου γαρ εστιν πασαν αισχυνην διαφυλαξαι καλον και ου παντα πασιν εν πιστει ευδοκιμειται
Sons, practice discipline peacefully. For what use is there in either concealed wisdom, or undiscovered treasure?17 αισχυνεσθε απο πατρος και μητρος περι πορνειας και απο ηγουμενου και δυναστου περι ψευδους
Better is the man who hides his foolishness than the man who hides his wisdom.18 απο κριτου και αρχοντος περι πλημμελειας και απο συναγωγης και λαου περι ανομιας
Yet truly, have respect for these things which proceed from my mouth.19 απο κοινωνου και φιλου περι αδικιας και απο τοπου ου παροικεις περι κλοπης
For it is not good to observe every reverence. And all things do not please all persons in their beliefs.20 απο αληθειας θεου και διαθηκης και απο πηξεως αγκωνος επ' αρτοις
Have shame of these things: of fornication before father and mother, and of a lie before the first leader and the powerful,21 απο σκορακισμου λημψεως και δοσεως και απο ασπαζομενων περι σιωπης
of a crime before a ruler or a judge, of iniquity before a congregation or a people,22 απο ορασεως γυναικος εταιρας και απο αποστροφης προσωπου συγγενους
of injustice before a companion or a friend, and of the place in which you live,23 απο αφαιρεσεως μεριδος και δοσεως και απο κατανοησεως γυναικος υπανδρου
of theft, and of the truth before God, and of the covenant, of reclining to eat bread, and of deceitfulness in giving or receiving,24 απο περιεργιας παιδισκης αυτου και μη επιστης επι την κοιτην αυτης
of silence before those who greet you, of looking upon a woman of fornication, and of averting your face from a relative.25 απο φιλων περι λογων ονειδισμου και μετα το δουναι μη ονειδιζε
You should not avert your face from your neighbor, nor should you take away a portion and not restore it.26 απο δευτερωσεως και λογου ακοης και απο καλυψεως λογων κρυφιων
You should not stare at another man’s wife, and nor pursue his handmaid, nor approach her bed.27 και εση αισχυντηρος αληθινως και ευρισκων χαριν εναντι παντος ανθρωπου
Avoid reproachful speeches before friends, and when you give, you should not place blame.
