NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.1 Consurrexit autem Satan contra Israël, et concitavit David ut numeraret Israël.
David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'2 Dixitque David ad Joab et ad principes populi : Ite, et numerate Israël a Bersabee usque Dan : et afferte mihi numerum ut sciam.
Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lordking, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involveIsrael in guilt?'3 Responditque Joab : Augeat Dominus populum suum centuplum quam sunt : nonne, domine mi rex, omnes servi tui sunt ? quare hoc quærit dominus meus, quod in peccatum reputetur Israëli ?
But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout al Israel, and thenreturned to Jerusalem.4 Sed sermo regis magis prævaluit : egressusque est Joab, et circuivit universum Israël : et reversus est Jerusalem,
Joab gave David the census results for the people: al Israel had eleven hundred thousand men whocould wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.5 deditque David numerum eorum quos circuierat : et inventus est omnis numerus Israël, mille millia et centum millia virorum educentium gladium : de Juda autem quadringenta septuaginta millia bellatorum.
Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.6 Nam Levi et Benjamin non numeravit : eo quod Joab invitus exsequeretur regis imperium.
God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.7 Displicuit autem Deo quod jussum erat : et percussit Israël.
David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive yourservant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'8 Dixitque David ad Deum : Peccavi nimis ut hoc facerem : obsecro, aufer iniquitatem servi tui, quia insipienter egi.
Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,9 Et locutus est Dominus ad Gad videntem Davidis, dicens :
'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '10 Vade, et loquere ad David, et dic ei : Hæc dicit Dominus : Trium tibi optionem do : unum, quod volueris, elige, et faciam tibi.
So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,11 Cumque venisset Gad ad David, dixit ei : Hæc dicit Dominus : Elige, quod volueris :
"Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of yourenemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country, while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel." Now decide how I am to answer himwho sends me.'12 aut tribus annis famem ; aut tribus mensibus te fugere hostes tuos, et gladium eorum non posse evadere ; aut tribus diebus gladium Domini, et pestilentiam versari in terra, et angelum Domini interficere in universis finibus Israël : nunc igitur vide quid respondeam ei qui misit me.
David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fal into Yahweh's hand, since hismercies are very great, than for me to fal into the hands of human enemies.'13 Et dixit David ad Gad : Ex omni parte me angustiæ premunt : sed melius mihi est ut incidam in manus Domini, quia multæ sunt miserationes ejus, quam in manus hominum.
So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.14 Misit ergo Dominus pestilentiam in Israël : et ceciderunt de Israël septuaginta millia virorum.
Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahwehlooked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold yourhand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.15 Misit quoque angelum in Jerusalem ut percuteret eam : cumque percuteretur, vidit Dominus, et misertus est super magnitudine mali : et imperavit angelo qui percutiebat : Sufficit, jam cesset manus tua. Porro angelus Domini stabat juxta aream Ornan Jebusæi.
David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawnsword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fel on theirfaces,16 Levansque David oculos suos, vidit angelum Domini stantem inter cælum et terram, et evaginatum gladium in manu ejus, et versum contra Jerusalem : et ceciderunt tam ipse quam majores natu, vestiti ciliciis, proni in terram.
and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned andactual y committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lieheavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'17 Dixitque David ad Deum : Nonne ego sum, qui jussi ut numeraretur populus ? ego, qui peccavi ? ego, qui malum feci ? iste grex, quid commeruit ? Domine Deus meus, vertatur, obsecro, manus tua in me, et in domum patris mei : populus autem tuus non percutiatur.
The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tel David that David should go up and erect an altar toYahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.18 Angelus autem Domini præcepit Gad ut diceret Davidi ut ascenderet, exstrueretque altare Domino Deo in area Ornan Jebusæi.
So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.19 Ascendit ergo David juxta sermonem Gad, quem locutus ei fuerat ex nomine Domini.
Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.20 Porro Ornan cum suspexisset et vidisset angelum, quatuorque filii ejus cum eo, absconderunt se : nam eo tempore terebat in area triticum.
When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off thethreshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.21 Igitur cum veniret David ad Ornan, conspexit eum Ornan, et processit ei obviam de area, et adoravit eum pronus in terram.
David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar toYahweh on it; let me have it at the ful price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said toDavid,22 Dixitque ei David : Da mihi locum areæ tuæ, ut ædificem in ea altare Domino : ita ut quantum valet argenti accipias, et cesset plaga a populo.
'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shal give you the oxen for burntofferings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shal give everything.'23 Dixit autem Ornan ad David : Tolle, et faciat dominus meus rex quodcumque ei placet : sed et boves do in holocaustum, et tribulas in ligna, et triticum in sacrificium : omnia libens præbebo.
'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the ful price. I wil not offer Yahweh whatbelongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'24 Dixitque ei rex David : Nequaquam ita fiet, sed argentum dabo quantum valet : neque enim tibi auferre debeo, et sic offerre Domino holocausta gratuita.
So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.25 Dedit ergo David Ornan pro loco siclos auri justissimi ponderis sexcentos.
There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called onYahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.26 Et ædificavit ibi altare Domino, obtulitque holocausta et pacifica, et invocavit Dominum ; et exaudivit eum in igne de cælo super altare holocausti.
Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.27 Præcepitque Dominus angelo, et convertit gladium suum in vaginam.
Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,David offered sacrifice there.28 Protinus ergo David, videns quod exaudisset eum Dominus in area Ornan Jebusæi, immolavit ibi victimas.
The Dwel ing which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time onthe high place at Gibeon,29 Tabernaculum autem Domini, quod fecerat Moyses in deserto, et altare holocaustorum, ea tempestate erat in excelso Gabaon.
but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.30 Et non prævaluit David ire ad altare ut ibi obsecraret Deum : nimio enim fuerat in timore perterritus, videns gladium angeli Domini.
