1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.	1 Había entre los fariseos un hombre llamado Nicodemo, magistrado judío.
2 He came to Jesus at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him."	2 Fue éste donde Jesús de noche y le dijo: «Rabbí, sabemos que has venido de Dios como maestro, porque nadie puede realizar las señales que tú realizas si Dios no está con él».
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."	3 Jesús le respondió: «En verdad, en verdad te digo: el que no nazca de lo alto no puede ver el Reino de Dios».
4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother's womb and be born again, can he?"	4 Dícele Nicodemo: «¿Cómo puede uno nacer siendo ya viejo? ¿Puede acaso entrar otra vez en el seno de su madre y nacer?»
5 Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.	5 Respondió Jesús: «En verdad, en verdad te digo: el que no nazca de agua y de Espíritu no puede entrar en el Reino de Dios.
6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit.	6 Lo nacido de la carne, es carne; lo nacido del Espíritu, es espíritu.
7 Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.'	7 No te asombres de que te haya dicho: Tenéis que nacer de lo alto.
8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."	8 El viento sopla donde quiere, y oyes su voz, pero no sabes de dónde viene ni a dónde va. Así es todo el que nace del Espíritu».
9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can this happen?"	9 Respondió Nicodemo: «¿Cómo puede ser eso?»
10 Jesus answered and said to him, "You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this?	10 Jesús le respondió: «Tú eres maestro en Israel y ¿no sabes estas cosas?
11 Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony.	11 «En verdad, en verdad te digo: nosotros hablamos de lo que sabemos y damos testimonio de lo que hemos visto, pero vosotros no aceptáis nuestro testimonio.
12 If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?	12 Si al deciros cosas de la tierra, no creéis, ¿cómo vais a creer si os digo cosas del cielo?
13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.	13 Nadie ha subido al cielo sino el que bajó del cielo, el Hijo del hombre.
14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,	14 Y como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así tiene que ser levantado el Hijo del hombre,
15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."	15 para que todo el que crea tenga por él vida eterna.
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.	16 Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo único, para que todo el que crea en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.	17 Porque Dios no ha enviado a su Hijo al mundo para juzgar al mundo, sino para que el mundo se salve por él.
18 Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.	18 El que creee en él, no es juzgado; pero el que no cree, ya está juzgado, porque no ha creído en el Nombre del Hijo único de Dios.
19 And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.	19 Y el juicio está en que vino la luz al mundo, y los hombres amaron más las tinieblas que la luz, porque sus obras eran malas.
20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed.	20 Pues todo el que obra el mal aborrece la luz y no va a la luz, para que no sean censuradas sus obras.
21 But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.	21 Pero el que obra la verdad, va a la luz, para que quede de manifiesto que sus obras están hechas según Dios».
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing.	22 Después de esto, se fue Jesús con sus discípulos al país de Judea; y allí se estaba con ellos y bautizaba.
23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized,	23 Juan también estaba bautizando en Ainón, cerca de Salim, porque había allí mucha agua, y la gente acudía y se bautizaba.
24 for John had not yet been imprisoned.	24 Pues todavía Juan no había sido metido en la cárcel.
25 Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew about ceremonial washings.	25 Se suscitó una discusión entre los discípulos de Juan y un judío acerca de la purificación.
26 So they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him."	26 Fueron, pues, donde Juan y le dijeron: «Rabbí, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, aquel de quien diste testimonio, mira, está bautizando y todos se van a él».
27 John answered and said, "No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven.	27 Juan respondió: «Nadie puede recibir nada si no se le ha dado del cielo.
28 You yourselves can testify that I said (that) I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him.	28 Vosotros mismos me sois testigos de que dije: “Yo no soy el Cristo, sino que he sido enviado delante de él.”
29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete.	29 El que tiene a la novia es el novio; pero el amigo del novio, el que asiste y le oye, se alegra mucho con la voz del novio. Esta es, pues, mi alegría, que ha alcanzado su plenitud.
30 He must increase; I must decrease."	30 Es preciso que él crezca y que yo disminuya.
31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven (is above all).	31 El que viene de arriba está por encima de todos: el que es de la tierra, es de la tierra y habla de la tierra. El que viene del cielo,
32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.	32 da testimonio de lo que ha visto y oído, y su testimonio nadie lo acepta.
33 Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy.	33 El que acepta su testimonio certifica que Dios es veraz.
34 For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit.	34 Porque aquel a quien Dios ha enviado habla las palabras de Dios, porque da el Espíritu sin medida.
35 The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.	35 El Padre ama al Hijo y ha puesto todo en su mano.
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.	36 El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna; el que rehúsa creer en el Hijo, no verá la vida, sino que la cólera de Dios permanece sobre él».
