Job 41

NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.1 Any hope you might have would be futile, the mere sight of him would overwhelm you.
Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?2 When roused, he grows ferocious, who could ever stand up to him?
Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?3 Who has ever attacked him with impunity? No one beneath al heaven!
I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.4 Next I wil talk of his limbs and describe his matchless strength-
Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?5 who can undo the front of his tunic or pierce the double armour of his breastplate?
Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?6 Who dare open the gates of his mouth? Terror reigns round his teeth!
Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;7 His back is like rows of shields, sealed with a stone seal,
They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;8 touching each other so close that no breath could pass between,
So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.9 sticking to one another making an impervious whole.
When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.10 His sneezes radiate light, his eyes are like the eyelashes of the dawn.
Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.11 From his mouth come fiery torches, sparks of fire fly out of it.
From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.12 His nostrils belch smoke like a cauldron boiling on the fire.
His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.13 His breath could kindle coals, flame issues from his mouth.
Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.14 His strength resides in his neck, violence leaps before him as he goes.
The strips of his flesh are jointed together, firmly set in and immovable.
His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.16 His heart is as hard as rock unyielding as the lower mil stone.
When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.17 When he stands up, the waves take fright and the bil ows of the sea retreat.
Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.18 Sword may strike but will not stick in him, no more will spear, javelin or lance.
He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.19 Iron means no more to him than straw, nor bronze than rotten wood.
The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.20 No arrow can make him flee, a sling-stone tickles him like hay.
Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.21 Club seems to him like straw, he laughs at the whirring javelin.
His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.22 He has sharp potsherds underneath, and moves across the slime like a harrow.
He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.23 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron, he makes the sea fume like a scent burner.
Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.24 Behind him he leaves a glittering wake -- a white fleece seems to float on the deeps.
Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.25 He has no equal on earth, being created without fear.
All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.26 He looks the haughtiest in the eye; of al the lordly beasts he is king.
