1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.	1 Ecco, davanti a lui ogni sicurezza viene meno, al solo vederlo si resta abbattuti.
2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?	2 Nessuno è tanto audace da poterlo sfidare: chi mai può resistergli?
3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?	3 Chi mai lo ha assalito e ne è uscito illeso? Nessuno sotto ogni cielo.
4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.	4 Non passerò sotto silenzio la forza delle sue membra, né la sua potenza né la sua imponente struttura.
5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?	5 Chi mai ha aperto il suo manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi è penetrato?
6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?	6 Chi mai ha aperto i battenti della sua bocca, attorno ai suoi denti terrificanti?
7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;	7 Il suo dorso è formato da file di squame, saldate con tenace suggello:
8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;	8 l’una è così unita con l’altra che l’aria fra di esse non passa;
9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.	9 ciascuna aderisce a quella vicina, sono compatte e non possono staccarsi.
10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.	10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce, i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell’aurora.
11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.	11 Dalla sua bocca erompono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.
12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.	12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia infuocata e bollente.
13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.	13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.
14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.	14 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre il terrore.
	15 Compatta è la massa della sua carne, ben salda su di lui e non si muove.
16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.	16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la macina inferiore.
17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.	17 Quando si alza si spaventano gli dèi e per il terrore restano smarriti.
18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.	18 La spada che lo affronta non penetra, né lancia né freccia né dardo.
19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.	19 Il ferro per lui è come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.
20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.	20 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, per lui le pietre della fionda sono come stoppia.
21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.	21 Come stoppia è la mazza per lui e si fa beffe del sibilo del giavellotto.
22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.	22 La sua pancia è fatta di cocci aguzzi e striscia sul fango come trebbia.
23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.	23 Fa ribollire come pentola il fondo marino, fa gorgogliare il mare come un vaso caldo di unguenti.
24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.	24 Dietro di sé produce una scia lucente e l’abisso appare canuto.
25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.	25 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, creato per non aver paura.
26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.	26 Egli domina tutto ciò che superbo s’innalza, è sovrano su tutte le bestie feroci».
