NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;	1 Yo establecí un pacto con mis ojos para no fijar la mirada en ninguna joven.
2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?	2 Porque ¿cuál es la porción que Dios asigna desde lo alto y la herencia que el Todopoderoso distribuye desde el cielo?
3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?	3 ¿No es la ruina para el injusto y el desastre para los que hacen el mal?
4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?	4 ¿Acaso él no ve mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?
5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;	5 Si caminé al lado de la mentira y mis pies corrieron hacia el engaño,
6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!	6 ¡que Dios me pese en una balanza justa y reconocerá mi integridad!
7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,	7 Si mi paso se desvió del camino y mi corazón fue detrás de lo que veían mis ojos; si alguna mancha se adhirió a mis manos,
8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!	8 ¡que otro coma lo que yo siembro y mis retoños sean arrancados de raíz!
9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;	9 Si me dejé seducir por alguna mujer o aceché a la puerta de mi vecino,
10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!	10 ¡que mi mujer muela el grano para otro y que otros abusen de ella!
11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;	11 Porque eso sí que es una infamia, un delito reprobado por los jueces;
12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.	12 es un fuego que devora hasta la Perdición y exterminará de raíz todas mis cosechas.
13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,	13 Si desestimé el derecho de mi esclavo o el de mi servidora, cuando litigaban conmigo,
14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?	14 ¿qué haré cuando Dios se levante, qué le replicaré cuando me pida cuenta?
15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?	15 El que me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo también a él? ¿No es uno mismo el que nos formó en el seno materno?
16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish	16 Si rehusé a los pobres lo que ellos deseaban y dejé desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;
17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,	17 si comí yo solo mi pedazo de pan, sin que el huérfano lo compartiera
18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--	18 –yo, que desde mi juventud lo crié como un padre y lo guié desde el vientre de mi madre–
19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,	19 si vi a un miserable sin ropa o a un indigente sin nada para cubrirse,
20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;	20 y no me bendijeron en lo íntimo de su ser por haberse calentado con el vellón de mis corderos;
21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--	21 si alcé mi mano contra un huérfano, porque yo contaba con una ayuda en la Puerta,
22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!	22 ¡que mi espada se desprenda del cuello y mi brazo sea arrancado de su juntura!
23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.	23 Porque el terror de Dios me acarrearía la ruina y no podría resistir ante su majestad.
24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;	24 Si deposité mi confianza en el oro y dije al oro fino: «Tú eres mi seguridad»;
25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--	25 si me alegré de tener muchas riquezas y de haber adquirido una enorme fortuna;
26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,	26 si a la vista del sol resplandeciente y de la luna que pasaba radiante,
27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;	27 mi corazón se dejó seducir en secreto y le envié besos con la mano:
28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.	28 ¡también eso sería un delito reprobado por los jueces, porque yo habría renegado del Dios de lo alto!
29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,	29 ¿Acaso me alegré del infortunio de mi enemigo y me regocijé cuando le tocó una desgracia?
30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--	30 No, no dejé que mi boca pecara, pidiendo su muerte con una imprecación.
31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"	31 ¿No decían los hombres de mi carpa: «¿Hay alguien que no se sació con su carne?».
32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--	32 Ningún extranjero pasaba la noche afuera, y yo abría mi puerta al caminante.
33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom	33 Si oculté mis transgresiones como un hombre cualquiera, escondiendo mi culpa en mi pecho,
34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!	34 porque temía el murmullo de la gente o me asustaba el desprecio de mis parientes, y me quedaba en silencio, sin salir a la puerta...
35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!	35 ¡Ah, si alguien quisiera escucharme! Aquí está mi firma: ¡que el Todopoderoso me responda! En cuanto al documento que escriba mi oponente,
36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;	36 yo lo llevaré sobre mis espaldas, y me lo ceñiré como una corona.
37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.	37 Sí, le manifestaré cada uno de mis pasos; como un príncipe, me acercaré hasta él.
38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;	38 Si mi tierra gritó venganza contra mí y también sus surcos derramaron lágrimas;
39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;	39 si comí sus frutos sin pagar y extorsioné a sus propietarios,
40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!	40 ¡que en lugar de trigo salgan espinas, y en vez de cebada, ortigas punzantes!
