LXXDOUAI-RHEIMS
υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει1 But Job answered, and said:
ει γαρ τις ιστων στησαι μου την οργην τας δε οδυνας μου αραι εν ζυγω ομοθυμαδον2 O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance.
και δη αμμου παραλιας βαρυτερα εσται αλλ' ως εοικεν τα ρηματα μου εστιν φαυλα3 As the sand of the sea this would appear heavier: therefore my words are full of sorrow :
βελη γαρ κυριου εν τω σωματι μου εστιν ων ο θυμος αυτων εκπινει μου το αιμα οταν αρξωμαι λαλειν κεντουσι με4 For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.
τι γαρ μη δια κενης κεκραξεται ονος αγριος αλλ' η τα σιτα ζητων ει δε και ρηξει φωνην βους επι φατνης εχων τα βρωματα5 Will the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or will the ox low when he standeth before a full manger?
ει βρωθησεται αρτος ανευ αλος ει δε και εστιν γευμα εν ρημασιν κενοις6 Or can an unsavoury thing be eaten, that is not seasoned with salt? or can a man taste that which when tasted bringeth death?
ου δυναται γαρ παυσασθαι μου η ψυχη βρομον γαρ ορω τα σιτα μου ωσπερ οσμην λεοντος7 The things which before my soul would not touch, now, through anguish are my meats.
ει γαρ δωη και ελθοι μου η αιτησις και την ελπιδα μου δωη ο κυριος8 Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for?
αρξαμενος ο κυριος τρωσατω με εις τελος δε μη με ανελετω9 And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?
ειη δε μου πολις ταφος εφ' ης επι τειχεων ηλλομην επ' αυτης ου μη φεισωμαι ου γαρ εψευσαμην ρηματα αγια θεου μου10 And that this may be my comfort, that afflicting me with sorrow, he spare not, nor I contradict the words of the Holy One.
τις γαρ μου η ισχυς οτι υπομενω η τις μου ο χρονος οτι ανεχεται μου η ψυχη11 For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end that I should keep patience?
μη ισχυς λιθων η ισχυς μου η αι σαρκες μου εισιν χαλκειαι12 My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh of brass.
η ουκ επ' αυτω επεποιθειν βοηθεια δε απ' εμου απεστιν13 Behold there is no help for me in myself, and my familiar friends also are departed from me.
απειπατο με ελεος επισκοπη δε κυριου υπερειδεν με14 He that taketh away mercy from his friend, forsaketh the fear of the Lord.
ου προσειδον με οι εγγυτατοι μου ωσπερ χειμαρρους εκλειπων η ωσπερ κυμα παρηλθον με15 My brethren have passed by me, as the torrent that passeth swiftly in the valleys.
οιτινες με διευλαβουντο νυν επιπεπτωκασιν μοι ωσπερ χιων η κρυσταλλος πεπηγως16 They that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.
καθως τακεισα θερμης γενομενης ουκ επεγνωσθη οπερ ην17 At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish: and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.
ουτως καγω κατελειφθην υπο παντων απωλομην δε και εξοικος εγενομην18 The paths of their steps are entangled: they shall walk in vain, and shall perish.
ιδετε οδους θαιμανων ατραπους σαβων οι διορωντες19 Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while.
και αισχυνην οφειλησουσιν οι επι πολεσιν και χρημασιν πεποιθοτες20 They are confounded, because I have hoped: they are come also even unto me, and are covered with shame.
αταρ δε και υμεις επεβητε μοι ανελεημονως ωστε ιδοντες το εμον τραυμα φοβηθητε21 Now you are come: and now seeing my affliction you are afraid.
τι γαρ μη τι υμας ητησα η της παρ' υμων ισχυος επιδεομαι22 Did I say: Bring to me, and give me of your substance?
ωστε σωσαι με εξ εχθρων η εκ χειρος δυναστων ρυσασθαι με23 Or deliver me from the hand of the enemy, and rescue me out of the hand of the mighty?
διδαξατε με εγω δε κωφευσω ει τι πεπλανημαι φρασατε μοι24 Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and if I have been ignorant in any thing, instruct me.
αλλ' ως εοικεν φαυλα αληθινου ρηματα ου γαρ παρ' υμων ισχυν αιτουμαι25 Why have you detracted the words of truth, whereas there is none of you that can reprove me?
ουδε ο ελεγχος υμων ρημασιν με παυσει ουδε γαρ υμων φθεγμα ρηματος ανεξομαι26 You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.
πλην οτι επ' ορφανω επιπιπτετε εναλλεσθε δε επι φιλω υμων27 You rush in upon the fatherless, and you endeavour to overthrow your friend.
νυνι δε εισβλεψας εις προσωπα υμων ου ψευσομαι28 However finish what you have begun, give ear, and see whether I lie.
καθισατε δη και μη ειη αδικον και παλιν τω δικαιω συνερχεσθε29 Answer, I beseech you, without contention: and speaking that which is just, judge ye.
ου γαρ εστιν εν γλωσση μου αδικον η ο λαρυγξ μου ουχι συνεσιν μελετα30 And you shall not And iniquity in my tongue, neither shall folly sound in my mouth.
