1 And Joseph commanded the steward of his house, saying: Fill their sacks with corn, as much as they can hold: and put the money of every one in the top of his sack.	1 Or Joseph donna des ordres à l'intendant de sa maison, et lui dit: Mettez dans leurs sacs autant de blé qu'ils en pourront tenir, et l'argent de chacun à l'entrée du sac;
2 And in the mouth of the younger's sack put my silver cup, and the price which he gave for the wheat. And it was so done.	2 Et mettez ma coupe d'argent à l'entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec l'argent qu'il a donné pour le blé. Cet ordre fut donc exécuté.
3 And when the morning arose, they were sent away with their asses.	3 Et le lendemain matin, on les laissa aller avec leurs ânes.
4 And when they were now departed out of the city, and had gone forward a little way; Joseph sendingfor the steward of his house, said: Arise, and pursue after the men: and when thou hast overtaken them, say to them: Why have you returned evil for good?	4 Lorsqu'ils furent sortis de la ville, comme ils n'avaient fait encore que peu de chemin, Joseph appela l'intendant de sa maison et lui dit: Courez vite après ces hommes, arrêtez-les et dites-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?
5 The cup which you have stolen is that in which my lord drinketh, and in which he is wont to divine: you have done a very evil thing.	5 La coupe que vous avez dérobée est celle dans laquelle boit mon maître, et dont il se sert pour deviner. Vous avez fait une très méchante action.
6 He did as he had commanded him. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them the same words.	6 L'intendant fit ce qui lui avait été commandé, et, les ayant arrêtés, il leur dit tout ce qui lui avait été prescrit.
7 And they answered: Why doth our lord speak so, as though thy servants had committed so heinous a fact?	7 Ils lui répondirent: Pourquoi mon seigneur parle-t-il ainsi à ses serviteurs et les croit-il capables d'une action si honteuse?
8 The money, that we found in the top of our sacks, we brought back to thee from the land of Chanaan: how then should it be that we should steal out of thy lord's house, gold or silver?	8 Nous vous avons rapporté du pays de Chanaan l'argent que nous avions trouvé à l'entrée de nos sacs. Comment donc se pourrait-il faire que nous eussions dérobé de la maison de votre maître de l'or ou de l'argent?
9 With whomsoever of thy servants shall be found that which thou seekest, let him die, and we will be the bondmen of my lord.	9 Que celui de vos serviteurs, quel qu'il puisse être, auprès de qui l'on trouvera ce que vous cherchez, soit mis à mort, et nous serons esclaves de mon seigneur.
10 And he said to them: Let it be according to your sentence: with whomsoever it shall be found, let him be my servant, and you shall be blameless.	10 Il leur dit: Que ce que vous prononcez soit exécuté. Quiconque se trouvera avoir pris ce que je cherche sera mon esclave, et vous en serez innocents.
11 Them they speedily took down their sacks to the ground, and every man opened his sack.	11 Ils déchargèrent donc aussitôt leurs sacs à terre, et chacun ouvrit le sien.
12 Which when he had searched, beginning at the eldest and ending at the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin's sack.	12 L'intendant les ayant fouillés, en commençant depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit, trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.
13 Then they rent their garments, and loading their asses again, returned into the town.	13 Alors ayant déchiré leurs vêtements et rechargés leurs ânes, ils revinrent à la ville.
14 And Juda at the head of his brethren went in to Joseph, (for he was not yet gone out of the place, ) and they altogether fell down before him on the ground.	14 Juda se présenta le premier avec ses frères devant Joseph, qui n'était pas encore sorti du lieu où il était; et ils se prosternèrent tous ensemble à terre devant lui.
15 And he said to them: Why would you do so? know you not that there is no one like me in the science of divining.	15 Joseph leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi? Ignorez-vous qu'il n'y a personne qui m'égale dans la science de deviner les choses cachées?
16 And Juda said to him: What shall we answer my lord? or what shall we say, or be able justly to allege? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are all bondmen to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.	16 Juda lui dit: Que répondrons-nous à mon seigneur? que lui dirons-nous, et que pouvons-nous lui représenter avec quelque ombre de justice pour notre défense? Dieu a trouvé l'iniquité de vos serviteurs. Nous sommes tous les esclaves de mon seigneur, nous et celui à qui on a trouvé la coupe.
17 Joseph answered: God forbid that should do so: he that stole the cup, he shall be my bondman: and go you away free to your father.	17 Joseph répondit: Dieu me garde d'agir de la sorte. Que celui qui a pris ma coupe soit mon esclave; et pour vous, allez en liberté retrouver votre père.
18 Then Juda coming hearer, said boldly: I beseech thee, my lord, let thy servant speak a word in thy ears,and be not angry with thy servant: for after Pharao thou art,	18 Juda, s'approchant alors plus près de Joseph, lui dit avec assurance: Mon seigneur, permettez, je vous prie, à votre serviteur, de vous adresser la parole, et ne vous irritez pas contre votre esclave; car après le Pharaon, c'est vous qui êtes
19 My lord. Thou didst ask thy servants the first time: Have you a father or a brother?	19 Mon seigneur. Vous avez demandé d'abord à vos serviteurs: Avez-vous encore votre père ou quelque autre frère?
20 And we answered thee, my lord: We have a father an old man, and a young boy, that was born in his old age; whose brother by the mother is dead: and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him tenderly.	20 Et nous vous avons répondu, mon seigneur: Nous avons un père qui est âgé, et un jeune frère qu'il a eu dans sa vieillesse, dont le frère qui était né de la même mère est mort: il ne reste plus que celui-là, et son père l'aime tendrement.
21 And thou saidst to thy servants: Bring him hither to me, and I will set my eyes on him.	21 Vous dites alors à vos serviteurs: Amenez-le-moi pour que mes yeux le contemplent.
22 We suggested to my lord: The boy cannot leave his father: for if he leave him, he will die.	22 Mais nous vous répondîmes, mon seigneur: Cet enfant ne peut quitter son père; car, s'il le quitte, il le fera mourir.
23 And thou saidst to thy servants: Except your youngest brother come with you, you shall see my face no more.	23 Vous dîtes à vos serviteurs: Si le dernier de vos frères ne vient avec vous, vous ne verrez plus mon visage.
24 Therefore when we were gone up to thy servant our father, we told him all that my lord had said.	24 Lors donc que nous fûmes retournés vers notre père, votre serviteur, nous lui rapportâmes tout ce que vous aviez dit, mon seigneur.
25 And our father said: Go again, and buy us a little wheat.	25 Et notre père nous ayant dit: Retournez en Egypte pour nous acheter un peu de blé,
26 And we said to him: We cannot go: if our youngest brother go down with us, we will set out together: otherwise, without him we dare not see the man's face.	26 Nous lui répondîmes: Nous ne pouvons y aller seuls. Si notre jeune frère vient avec nous, nous irons ensemble; mais à moins qu'il ne vienne, nous n'osons nous présenter devant celui qui commande en ce pays-là.
27 Whereunto he answered: You know that my wife bore two.	27 Il nous répondit: Vous savez que j'ai eu deux fils de Rachel ma femme.
28 One went out, and you said: A beast devoured him: and hitherto he appeareth not.	28 L'un d'eux étant allé aux champs, vous m'avez dit qu'une bête l'avait dévoré, et il ne paraît plus jusqu'à cette heure.
29 If you take this also, and any thing befall him in the way you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow unto hell.	29 Si vous emmenez encore celui-ci, et qu'il lui arrive quelque accident en chemin, vous accablerez ma vieillesse d'une affliction qui la conduira au tombeau.
30 Therefore if I shall go to thy servant our father, and the boy be wanting, (whereas his life dependeth upon the life of him,)	30 Si je me présente donc à mon père, votre serviteur, et que l'enfant n'y soit pas, comme sa vie dépend de celle de son fils,
31 And he shall see that he is not with us, he will die, and thy servants shall bring down his gray hairs with sorrow unto hell.	31 Lorsqu'il verra qu'il n'est point avec nous, il mourra, et vos serviteurs accableront sa vieillesse d'une douleur qui le mènera au tombeau.
32 Let me be tht proper servant, who took him into my trust, and promised, saying: If I bring him not again, I will be guilty of sin against my father for ever.	32 Que ce soit donc plutôt moi qui sois votre esclave, puisque je me suis rendu caution de cet enfant, et que j'en ai répondu à mon père, en lui disant: Si je ne le ramène, je veux bien que mon père m'impute cette faute, et qu'il ne me la pardonne jamais.
33 Therefore I thy servant will stay instead of the boy in the service of my lord, and let the boy go up with his brethren.	33 Ainsi je demeurerai votre esclave, et servirai mon seigneur à la place de l'enfant, afin qu'il retourne avec ses frères.
34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I be a witness of the calamity that will oppress my father.	34 Car je ne puis pas retourner vers mon père sans que l'enfant soit avec nous, de peur que je ne sois moi-même témoin de l'extrême affliction qui accablera notre père.
