1 Figliuol mio, guarda i miei detti, E riponi appo te i miei comandamenti.	1 My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands.
2 Guarda i miei comandamenti, e tu viverai; E guarda il mio insegnamento, come la pupilla degli occhi tuoi.	2 Keep my commands and live, my teaching as the apple of your eye;
3 Legateli alle dita, Scrivili in su la tavola del tuo cuore.	3 Bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Di’ alla sapienza: Tu sei mia sorella; E chiama la prudenza tua parente;	4 Say to Wisdom, "You are my sister!" call Understanding, "Friend!"
5 Acciocchè esse ti guardino dalla donna straniera, Dalla forestiera che parla vezzosamente	5 That they may keep you from another's wife, from the adulteress with her smooth words.
6 Perciocchè io riguardava una volta per la finestra della mia casa, Per li miei cancelli;	6 For at the window of my house, through my lattice I looked out--
7 E vidi tra gli scempi, E scorsi tra i fanciulli, un giovanetto scemo di senno;	7 And I saw among the simple ones, I observed among the young men, a youth with no sense,
8 Il qual passava per la strada, presso al cantone della casa d’una tal donna; E camminava traendo alla casa di essa;	8 Going along the street near the corner, then walking in the direction of her house--
9 In su la sera, in sul vespro del dì. In su l’imbrunire ed oscurar della notte;	9 In the twilight, at dusk of day, at the time of the dark of night.
10 Ed ecco, una donna gli venne incontro, In assetto da meretrice, e cauta d’animo;	10 And lo! the woman comes to meet him, robed like a harlot, with secret designs--
11 Strepitosa, e sviata; I cui piedi non si fermavano in casa;	11 She is fickle and unruly, in her home her feet cannot rest;
12 Essendo ora fuori, or per le piazze; E stando agli agguati presso ad ogni cantone.	12 Now she is in the streets, now in the open squares, and at every corner she lurks in ambush--
13 Ed essa lo prese, e lo baciò, E sfacciatamente gli disse:	13 When she seizes him, she kisses him, and with an impudent look says to him:
14 Io avea sopra me il voto di sacrificii da render grazie; Oggi ho pagati i miei voti.	14 "I owed peace offerings, and today I have fulfilled my vows;
15 Però ti sono uscita incontro, Per cercarti, e ti ho trovato.	15 So I came out to meet you, to look for you, and I have found you!
16 Io ho acconcio il mio letto con capoletti Di lavoro figurato a cordicelle di fil di Egitto.	16 With coverlets I have spread my couch, with brocaded cloths of Egyptian linen;
17 Io ho profumato il mio letto Con mirra, con aloe, e con cinnamomo.	17 I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon.
18 Vieni, inebbriamoci d’amori infino alla mattina, Sollaziamoci in amorosi piaceri.	18 "Come, let us drink our fill of love, until morning, let us feast on love!
19 Perciocchè il marito non è in casa sua; Egli è andato in viaggio lontano;	19 For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey;
20 Egli ha preso in mano un sacchetto di danari; Egli ritornerà a casa sua a nuova luna.	20 A bag of money he took with him, not till the full moon will he return home."
21 Ella lo piegò con le molte sue lusinghe, E lo sospinse con la dolcezza delle sue labbra.	21 She wins him over by her repeated urging, with her smooth lips she leads him astray;
22 Ed egli andò dietro a lei subitamente, Come il bue viene al macello, E come i ceppi son per gastigamento dello stolto;	22 He follows her stupidly, like an ox that is led to slaughter; Like a stag that minces toward the net,
23 Come l’uccello si affretta al laccio, Senza sapere che è contro alla vita sua, Finchè la saetta gli trafigga il fegato	23 till an arrow pierces its liver; Like a bird that rushes into a snare, unaware that its life is at stake.
24 Ora dunque, figliuoli, ascoltatemi, Ed attendete a’ detti della mia bocca.	24 So now, O children, listen to me, be attentive to the words of my mouth!
25 Il cuor tuo non dichini alle vie d’una tal donna; Non isviarti ne’ suoi sentieri.	25 Let not your heart turn to her ways, go not astray in her paths;
26 Perciocchè ella ne ha fatti cader molti uccisi; E pur tutti coloro ch’ella ha morti eran possenti.	26 For many are those she has struck down dead, numerous, those she has slain.
27 La sua casa è la via dell’inferno, Che scende a’ più interni luoghi della morte	27 Her house is made up of ways to the nether world, leading down into the chambers of death.
