| 1 No reprendas a un anciano, sino exhórtalo como a un padre. Trata a los jóvenes como a hermanos, | 1 Do not rebuke an older man but exhort him as you would a father; treat younger men like brothers, |
| 2 a las ancianas como a madres, y a las jóvenes como a hermanas, con toda pureza. | 2 older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity. |
| 3 Honra y atiende a las viudas que realmente están necesitadas. | 3 Honor widows who are real widows. |
| 4 Pero si alguna viuda tiene hijos o nietos, estos deben aprender primero a cumplir con sus deberes familiares y a ser agradecidos con sus padres, porque eso es lo que agrada a Dios. | 4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. |
| 5 Hay viudas que lo son realmente, porque se han quedado solas y tienen puesta su confianza en Dios, consagrando sus días y sus noches a la súplica y a la oración. | 5 She who is a real widow, and is left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day; |
| 6 Pero la que lleva una vida disipada, aunque viva, está muerta. | 6 whereas she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. |
| 7 Incúlcales esto para que sean irreprochables: | 7 Command this, so that they may be without reproach. |
| 8 el que no se ocupa de los suyos, sobre todo si conviven con él, ha renegado de su fe y es peor que un infiel. | 8 If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
| 9 Para estar inscrita en el grupo de las viudas, una mujer debe tener por menos sesenta años y haberse casado una sola vez. | 9 Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband; |
| 10 Que sus buenas obras den testimonio de ella; tiene que haber educado a sus hijos, ejercitado la hospitalidad, haber lavado los pies a los hermanos, socorrido a los necesitados y practicado el bien en todas sus formas. | 10 and she must be well attested for her good deeds, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, relieved the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way. |
| 11 No inscribas, en cambio, a las viudas más jóvenes, porque cuando los deseos puramente humanos prevalecen sobre su entrega a Cristo, quieren casarse otra vez, | 11 But refuse to enrol younger widows; for when they grow wanton against Christ they desire to marry, |
| 12 y se hacen culpables por faltar a su compromiso. | 12 and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge. |
| 13 Además, si no tienen nada que hacer, acaban yendo de casa en casa y se dedican a charlar y a curiosear, ocupándose en lo que no les importa. | 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, gadding about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. |
| 14 Por eso quiero que las viudas jóvenes se casen, que tengan hijos y atiendan a sus obligaciones domésticas, para no dar lugar a la maledicencia de los enemigos. | 14 So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, rule their households, and give the enemy no occasion to revile us. |
| 15 Algunas de ellas ya han abandonado el buen camino y siguen a Satanás. | 15 For some have already strayed after Satan. |
| 16 Si una mujer creyente tiene viudas en la familia, que se ocupe de ellas. De esta manera, la Iglesia no las tendrá a su cargo y quedará libre para atender a las que están realmente necesitadas. | 16 If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her assist them; let the church not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are real widows. |
| 17 Los presbíteros que ejercen su cargo debidamente merecen un doble reconocimiento, sobre todo, los que dedican todo su esfuerzo a la predicación y a la enseñanza. | 17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; |
| 18 Porque dice la Escritura: No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla, y también: El obrero tienen derecho a su salario. | 18 for the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain," and, "The laborer deserves his wages." |
| 19 No admitas acusaciones contra un presbítero, a menos que estén avaladas por dos o tres testigos. | 19 Never admit any charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. |
| 20 A los que incurran en pecado, repréndelos públicamente, para que sirva de escarmiento a los demás. | 20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. |
| 21 Delante de Dios, de Jesucristo y de sus ángeles elegidos, te ordeno que observes estas indicaciones, sin prejuicios y procediendo con imparcialidad. | 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without favor, doing nothing from partiality. |
| 22 No te apresures a imponer las manos a nadie, y no te hagas cómplice de pecados ajenos. Consérvate puro. | 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor participate in another man's sins; keep yourself pure. |
| 23 A causa de tus frecuentes malestares estomacales, no bebas agua sola: toma un poco de vino. | 23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. |
| 24 Los pecados de algunas personas son notorios que no necesitan ser llevados a juicio; los de otras, en cambio, sólo se descubren después. | 24 The sins of some men are conspicuous, pointing to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. |
| 25 De la misma manera, las buenas obras están a la vista, y las que no lo son, ya se pondrán de manifiesto. | 25 So also good deeds are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. |
