1 Yahvé dit à Moïse et à Éléazar, fils d’Aaron le prêtre:	1 the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar; son of Aaron the priest,
2 “Recensez toute la communauté des Israélites, depuis l’âge de 20 ans et au-dessus, faites le compte par famille de ceux qui sont aptes à la guerre.”	2 "Take a census, by ancestral houses, throughout the community of the Israelites of all those of twenty years or more who are fit for military service in Israel."
3 Moïse et Éléazar le prêtre leur parlèrent donc dans les Steppes-de-Moab, près du Jourdain, en face de Jéricho:	3 So on the plains of Moab along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan, Moses and the priest Eleazar registered
4 l’ordre de Yahvé à Moïse valait pour tous les Israélites de l’âge de 20 ans et au-dessus. Voici les fils d’Israël sortis du pays d’Égypte:	4 those of twenty years or more, as the LORD had commanded Moses. The Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt were as follows:
5 Ruben premier-né d’Israël; les fils de Ruben: Hénok et le clan Hénokite, Palou et le clan Palouïte,	5 Of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, the Reubenites by clans were: through Hanoch the clan of the Hanochites, through Pallu the clan of the Palluites,
6 Hesron et le clan Hesronite, Karmi et le clan Karmite.	6 through Hezron the clan of the Hezronites, through Carmi the clan of the Carmites.
7 Ce sont les clans des Rubénites, on en recensa 43 730.	7 These were the clans of the Reubenites, of whom forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty men were registered.
8 Fils de Palou: Éliab,	8 From Pallu descended Eliab,
9 les fils d’Éliab: Némuel, Datan et Abiram. Datan et Abiram, qui étaient considérés dans la communauté, se révoltèrent cependant contre Moïse et Aaron. Ils faisaient partie de la bande de Coré quand elle se révolta contre Yahvé.	9 and the descendants of Eliab were Dathan and Abiram-the same Dathan and Abiram, councilors of the community, who revolted against Moses and Aaron (like Korah's band when it rebelled against the LORD).
10 La terre ouvrit alors la bouche et les engloutit avec Coré. Leur bande disparut lorsque le feu consuma les 250 révoltés. Ce fut un exemple,	10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them as a warning (Korah too and the band that died when the fire consumed two hundred and fifty men.

51 On recensa donc 601 730 Israélites.	51 These six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty were the Israelites who were registered.
52 Yahvé dit à Moïse:	52 The LORD said to Moses,
53 “Le pays leur sera partagé en héritage selon le nombre des recensés.	53 "Among these groups the land shall be divided as their heritage in keeping with the number of individuals in each group.
54 Tu donneras un grand domaine à ceux qui sont nombreux et un petit domaine à ceux qui sont peu nombreux. Chacun aura son héritage selon le nombre des recensés.	54 To a large group you shall assign a large heritage, to a small group a small heritage, each group receiving its heritage in proportion to the number of men registered in it.
55 On devra partager au sort le pays et l’héritage se répartira selon le nom des tribus d’origine.	55 But the land shall be divided by lot, as the heritage of the various ancestral tribes.
56 C’est le sort qui départagera l’héritage, pour ceux qui sont nombreux et pour ceux qui le sont moins.”	56 As the lot falls shall each group, large or small, be assigned its heritage."
57 Voici les Lévites recensés selon leurs clans: Guerchon et le clan Guerchonite, Kahat et le clan Kahatite, Mérari et le clan Mérarite.	57 The Levites registered by clans were: through Gershon the clan of the Gershonites, through Kohath the clan of the Kohathites, through Merari the clan of the Merarites.
58 Voici les clans de Lévi: le clan Libnite, le clan Hébronite, le clan Mahlite, le clan Mouchite, le clan Coréite. Kahat engendra Amram.	58 These also were clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. Among the descendants of Kohath was Amram,
59 La femme d’Amram se nommait Yokébed, fille de Lévi; elle était née en Égypte. Elle donna à Amram: Aaron, Moïse et leur sœur Miryam.	59 whose wife was named Jochebed. She also was of the tribe of Levi, born to the tribe in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.
60 Aaron engendra Nadab et Abihou, Éléazar et Itamar.	60 To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61 Nadab et Abihou moururent pour avoir porté devant Yahvé un feu profane.	61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the LORD.
62 On recensa au total 23 000 mâles d’un mois et au-dessus. On ne les avait pas recensés avec les autres Israélites, car ils n’avaient pas à partager l’héritage avec eux.	62 The total number of male Levites one month or more of age, who were registered, was twenty-three thousand. They were not registered with the other Israelites, however, for no heritage was given them among the Israelites.
63 Ce sont donc là tous les hommes recensés par Moïse et Éléazar le prêtre, lors du recensement des Israélites dans les Steppes-de-Moab, près du Jourdain, à la hauteur de Jéricho.	63 These, then, were the men registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar in the census of the Israelites taken on the plains of Moab along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.
64 Aucun d’eux n’avait été recensé par Moïse et Aaron le prêtre lorsqu’ils avaient dénombré les Israélites dans le désert du Sinaï;	64 Among them there was not a man of those who had been registered by Moses and the priest Aaron in the census of the Israelites taken in the desert of Sinai.
65 Yahvé, en effet, avait dit à ces derniers qu’ils allaient tous mourir dans le désert, et qu’il n’en resterait pas un seul, excepté Caleb fils de Yéfouné, et Josué fils de Noun.	65 For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the desert, and not one of them was left except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
