VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Profectusque est populus de Haseroth, fixis tentoriis in deserto Pharan.1 The LORD said to Moses,
Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
Mitte viros, qui considerent terram Chanaan, quam daturus sum filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus, ex principibus.3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros, quorum ista sunt nomina.4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur.5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri.6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone.7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph.8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun.9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu.10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
De tribu Zabulon, Geddiel filium Sodi.11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
De tribu Joseph, sceptri Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi.12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
De tribu Dan, Ammiel filium Gemalli.13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
De tribu Aser, Sthur filium Michaël.14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
De tribu Nephthali, Nahabi filium Vapsi.15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi.16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram : vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue.
In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
Misit ergo eos Moyses ad considerandam terram Chanaan, et dixit ad eos : Ascendite per meridianam plagam. Cumque veneritis ad montes,18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
considerate terram, qualis sit : et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus : si pauci numero an plures :19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
ipsa terra, bona an mala : urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris :20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt.21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath.22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac : nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est.23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt :24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
qui appellatus est Nehelescol, id est Torrens botri, eo quod botrum portassent inde filii Israël.
After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
venerunt ad Moysen et Aaron et ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël in desertum Pharan, quod est in Cades. Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ :27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
et narraverunt, dicentes : Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest :28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
sed cultores fortissimos habet, et urbes grandes atque muratas. Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi.29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis : Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis.30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
Inter hæc Caleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait : Ascendamus, et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam.31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant : Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est.32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
Detraxeruntque terræ, quam inspexerant, apud filios Israël, dicentes : Terra, quam lustravimus, devorat habitatores suos : populus, quem aspeximus, proceræ staturæ est.33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo : quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur.
