É fumaça a respiração de nossos narizes, e nosso pensamento, uma centelha que salta do bater de nosso coração! | 2 Because we were born by mere chance, and hereafter we shall be as though we had never been; because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, and reason is a spark kindled by the beating of our hearts. |
| 3 Extinta ela, nosso corpo se tornará pó, e o nosso espírito se dissipará como um vapor inconsistente! | 3 When it is extinguished, the body will turn to ashes, and the spirit will dissolve like empty air. |

Nossa vida passará como os traços de uma nuvem, desvanecer-se-á como uma névoa que os raios do sol expulsam, e que seu calor dissipa. | 4 Our name will be forgotten in time and no one will remember our works; our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud, and be scattered like mist that is chased by the rays of the sun and overcome by its heat. |
| 5 A passagem de uma sombra: eis a nossa vida, e nenhum reinício é possível uma vez chegado o fim, porque o selo lhe é aposto e ninguém volta. | 5 For our allotted time is the passing of a shadow, and there is no return from our death, because it is sealed up and no one turns back. |
| 6 Vinde, portanto! Aproveitemo-nos das boas coisas que existem! Vivamente gozemos das criaturas durante nossa juventude! | 6 "Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that exist, and make use of the creation to the full as in youth. |

| 14 Sua existência é uma censura às nossas idéias; basta sua vista para nos importunar. | 14 He became to us a reproof of our thoughts; |
| 15 Sua vida, com efeito, não se parece com as outras, e os seus caminhos são muito diferentes. | 15 the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is unlike that of others, and his ways are strange. |
| 16 Ele nos tem por uma moeda de mau quilate, e afasta-se de nosso caminhos como de manchas. Julga feliz a morte do justo, e gloria-se de ter Deus por pai. | 16 We are considered by him as something base, and he avoids our ways as unclean; he calls the last end of the righteous happy, and boasts that God is his father. |
| 17 Vejamos, pois, se suas palavras são verdadeiras, e experimentemos o que acontecerá quando da sua morte, 18. porque, se o justo é filho de Deus, Deus o defenderá, e o tirará das mãos dos seus adversários. | 17 Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; |
| 18 for if the righteous man is God's son, he will help him, and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. |
| 19 Provemo-lo por ultrajes e torturas, a fim de conhecer a sua doçura e estarmos cientes de sua paciência. | 19 Let us test him with insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his forbearance. |
| 20 Condenemo-lo a uma morte infame. Porque, conforme ele, Deus deve intervir. | 20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for, according to what he says, he will be protected." |
| 21 Eis o o que pensam, mas enganam-se, sua malícia os cega: | 21 Thus they reasoned, but they were led astray, for their wickedness blinded them, |
| 22 eles desconhecem os segredos de Deus, não esperam que a santidade seja recompensada, e não acreditam na glorificação das almas puras. | 22 and they did not know the secret purposes of God, nor hope for the wages of holiness, nor discern the prize for blameless souls; |
| 23 Ora, Deus criou o homem para a imortalidade, e o fez à imagem de sua própria natureza. | 23 for God created man for incorruption, and made him in the image of his own eternity, |
| 24 É por inveja do demônio que a morte entrou no mundo, e os que pertencem ao demônio prová-la-ão. | 24 but through the devil's envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his party experience it. |
