1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:	1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:
2 "Oseremo rivolgerti la parola? Tu sei depresso! Eppure chi potrebbe trattenere il discorso?	2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?
3 Vedi, tu facevi la lezione a molti e ridavi vigore a mani inerti.	3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.
4 Le tue parole sostenevano i vacillanti e rinfrancavano le ginocchia che si piegavano.	4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.
5 Ma ora che tocca a te, sei depresso; ora che il colpo ti raggiunge, ne sei sconvolto.	5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.
6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia, e l'integrità della tua condotta, la tua speranza?	6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?
7 Rammenta, dunque: quale innocente è mai perito? E dove si son visti i giusti sterminati?	7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?
8 Per quanto ho costatato, coloro che coltivano malizia e seminano miseria, mietono tali cose.	8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.
9 Periscono a un soffio di Dio e sono annientati a un alito della sua ira.	9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.
10 Il ruggito del leone, le urla della belva e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.	10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;
11 Muore il leone per mancanza di preda, e i piccoli della leonessa devono disperdersi.	11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 Ora mi fu detta furtivamente una parola, e il mio orecchio ne carpì il mormorìo,	12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.
13 tra i fantasmi di visioni notturne, quando il letargo cade sugli uomini.	13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
14 Un terrore mi prese e uno spavento che fece tremare tutte le mie ossa.	14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.
15 Un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e mi si rizzarono i peli della carne.	15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Uno stava in piedi, non ne distinguevo l'aspetto, solo una figura apparve ai miei occhi; poi udii una voce sommessa:	16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:
17 "Può l'uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio, o un mortale essere puro davanti al suo creatore?	17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?
18 Vedi, egli non si fida nemmeno dei suoi servi, e nei suoi messaggeri riscontra difetti;	18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.
19 quanto più in coloro che abitano case di fango, i cui fondamenti si trovano nella polvere e sono corrosi dal tarlo!	19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!
20 Dall'alba alla sera sono ridotti in polvere, senza che nessuno lo avverta, periscono per sempre.	20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.
21 Non sono forse già strappate le corde della loro tenda e muoiono senza sapere come?".	21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."
