1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.	1 Il giovane Samuele serviva dunque Jahvè sotto lo sguardo di Eli. La parola di Jahvè era rara in quel tempo; non era cosa frequente la visione divina.
2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place;	2 Ora, quel giorno Eli stava dormendo nella sua casa, poiché i suoi occhi avevano cominciato a perdere vigore così da non poter vedere nettamente.
3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down within the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.	3 La lampada di Dio non era ancora spenta e Samuele stava a giacere accanto al tempio di Jahvè, là dove c’era l’arca di Dio.
4 Then the LORD called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am!"	4 A un tratto Jahvè chiamò: «Samuele! Samuele!» Questi rispose: «Eccomi!»
5 and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down.	5 e corse da Eli dicendo: «Eccomi, se mi hai chiamato». Si sentì rispondere: «Non ti ho chiamato, torna a dormire». E andò a dormire.
6 And the LORD called again, "Samuel!" And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again."	6 Jahvè chiamò una seconda volta: «Samuele!» Samuele, alzatosi, andò da Eli dicendo: «Eccomi, se mi hai chiamato». Ma lui ripeté: «Non ti ho chiamato, figlio mio; torna a dormire».
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.	7 Samuele non conosceva ancora Jahvè, poiché non gli si era ancora manifestata la parola di Jahvè.
8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy.	8 Jahvè chiamò di nuovo: «Samuele!» per la terza volta; questi si alzò e andò da Eli dicendo: «Eccomi, se mi hai chiamato». Allora Eli capì che Jahvè chiamava il giovane.
9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for thy servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.	9 Gli disse quindi: «Va’ a dormire e, se ti chiamerà, tu dirai: “Parla, Jahvè, perché il tuo servitore è in ascolto”».
10 And the LORD came and stood forth, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for thy servant hears."	10 Samuele andò a dormire al suo posto. Venne Jahvè, gli si pose accanto e chiamò questa volta come le altre: «Samuele! Samuele!» Allora Samuele disse: «Parla perché”il tuo servitore è in ascolto».
11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel, at which the two ears of every one that hears it will tingle.	11 Jahvè disse a Samuele: «Ecco, sto per fare in Israele una cosa tale che romberanno le orecchie a chiunque la udrà!
12 On that day I will fulfil against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.	12 In quel giorno farò succedere contro Eli tutto ciò che avevo detto contro la sua casa, da capo a fondo!
13 And I tell him that I am about to punish his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them.	13 Gli annuncerai che io punisco la sua casa per sempre dal momento che sapeva come i suoi figli ingiuriavano Dio, ma non li ha corretti, puniti.
14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering for ever."	14 Per questo io giuro alla casa di Eli: “Non si potrà espiare mai l’iniquità della casa di Eli né con sacrifici né con oblazioni!”».
15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.	15 Samuele dormì fino al mattino. All’alba si alzò e aprì i battenti del tempio di Jahvè. Non aveva il coraggio di riferire la visione a Eli;
16 But Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am."	16 ma Eli, chiamatolo, gli disse: «Samuele, figlio mio!» E lui: «Eccomi».
17 And Eli said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you."	17 Egli seguitò «Che cosa ti ha detto? non tenermelo nascosto! Mandi a te Dio questo e questo, se mi nasconderai una delle parole che ti ha detto!»,
18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him."	18 Allora Samuele gli riferì tutte le parole e non gli nascose nulla. Eli concluse: «Lui è Jahvè! Faccia pure ciò che è bene ai suoi occhi!»
19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.	19 Samuele divenne grande e Jahvè fu con lui. Egli non lasciò cadere a terra una sola delle sue parole.
20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD.	20 Tutto Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabea, seppe che Samuele era costituito profeta di Jahvè.
21 And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD.	21 In seguito Jahvè si mostrò altre volte a Samuele, dopo che si era rivelato a Samuele a Silo, e la parola di Samuele giunse a tutto Israele come parola di Jahvè.
