James 3

1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.	1 - Fratelli miei, non vogliate esser molti a far da maestri, sapendo che vi addossate un giudizio più severo.
2 For we all make many mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.	2 Infatti tutti manchiamo in molte cose! Chi non manca nel parlare, è un uomo perfetto e può tenere a freno anche tutto quanto il corpo.
3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies.	3 Se noi mettiamo il freno in bocca ai cavalli, perchè ci siano ubbidienti, teniamo a freno anche tutto il loro corpo.
4 Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.	4 Ecco, anche le navi, benchè siano grandi e sospinte da venti gagliardi, vengono dirette da un piccolo timone dovunque ordini il timoniere.
5 So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire!	5 Così pure la lingua è un piccolo membro e si vanta di grandi cose. Ecco un piccolo fuoco che gran selva incendia!
6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell.	6 Anche la lingua è un fuoco, un mondo d'iniquità. Posta tra le nostre membra, la lingua contamina tutto il corpo, ed essendo infiammata dall'inferno, mette in fiamme la ruota del viver nostro.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind,	7 Infatti ogni specie di bestie, di uccelli, di serpenti e d'altri animali si doma ed è stata domata dall'uomo;
8 but no human being can tame the tongue--a restless evil, full of deadly poison.	8 ma la lingua non c'è uomo che possa domarla; è un male che non si può frenare; è piena di mortale veleno.
9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God.	9 Con essa benediciamo il Signore e Padre; e con essa malediciamo gli uomini, che son stati creati a immagine di Dio.
10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so.	10 Dalla stessa bocca esce la benedizione e la maledizione. Non bisogna, fratelli, che sia così.
11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish?	11 Forse che la fonte getta dalla stessa apertura acqua dolce e amara?
12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.	12 Può forse, fratelli miei, un fico dar uva o una vite [dar] fichi? E neppure [una fonte] salata può dare acqua dolce.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good life let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.	13 Chi è saggio e intelligente tra voi? Faccia vedere con la buona vita le sue opere fatte con la mansuetudine [propria] della saggezza.
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.	14 Ma se avete in cuor vostro uno zelo amaro e litigioso, non vi gloriate e non mentite contro la verità.
15 This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish.	15 Poichè non è questa una sapienza che vien dall'alto; ma terrena, carnale, diabolica.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.	16 Dove infatti vi è tale zelo e dissensi, là è scompiglio e ogni opera perversa.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity.	17 Ma la sapienza che vien dall'alto, prima di tutto, è pura, di poi pacifica, modesta, arrendevole, condiscendete ai buoni, piena di misericordia e di buoni frutti, aliena dal criticare e dall'ipocrisia.
18 And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.	18 Ora il frutto della giustizia si semina nella pace da coloro che praticano la pace.
