Then the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel;1 And the leaders of the families of Levi approached Eleazar, the priest, and Joshua, the son of Nun, and the rulers of the extended families of each of the tribes of the sons of Israel.
and they said to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, "The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to dwell in, along with their pasture lands for our cattle."2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, and they said, “The Lord instructed, by the hand of Moses, that cities should be given to us as habitations, with their suburbs to nourish our cattle.”
So by command of the LORD the people of Israel gave to the Levites the following cities and pasture lands out of their inheritance.3 And so the sons of Israel gave cities and their suburbs from their possessions, in accord with the order of the Lord.
The lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. So those Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, thirteen cities.4 And the lot went out for the family of Kohath, of the sons of Aaron, the priest, from the tribes of Judah and Simeon and Benjamin: thirteen cities.
And the rest of the Kohathites received by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.5 And to the remainder of the sons of Kohath, that is, to the Levites who were left over, there went, from the tribes of Ephraim and Dan, and from the one half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.
The Gersonites received by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.6 And next the lot went out to the sons of Gershon, so that they would receive, from the tribes of Issachar and Asher and Naphtali, and from the one half tribe of Manasseh at Bashan: the number of thirteen cities.
The Merarites according to their families received from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.7 And to the sons of Merari, by their families, from the tribes of Reuben and Gad and Zebulun, there went twelve cities.
These cities and their pasture lands the people of Israel gave by lot to the Levites, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.8 And so the sons of Israel gave cities and their suburbs to the Levites, just as the Lord instructed by the hand of Moses, distributing to each by lot.
Out of the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Simeon they gave the following cities mentioned by name,9 From the tribes of the sons of Judah and Simeon, Joshua gave cities, whose names are these:
which went to the descendants of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites who belonged to the Levites; since the lot fell to them first.10 to the sons of Aaron, of the families of Kohath of the stock of Levi, (for the first lot went out for them,)
They gave them Kiriath-arba (Arba being the father of Anak), that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasture lands round about it.11 the city of Arba, the father of Anak, which is called Hebron, on the mountain of Judah, and its surrounding suburbs.
But the fields of the city and its villages had been given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.12 Yet truly, the fields and its villages he had given to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, as a possession.
And to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the slayer, with its pasture lands, Libnah with its pasture lands,13 Therefore, he gave to the sons of Aaron the priest, Hebron as a city of refuge, as well as its suburbs, and Libnah, with its suburbs,
Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,14 and Jattir, and Eshtemoa,
Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands,15 and Holon, and Debir,
Ain with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands--nine cities out of these two tribes;16 and Ain, and Juttah, and Beth-shemesh, with their suburbs: nine cities from two tribes, just as has been said.
then out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,17 Then, from the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, he gave Gibeon, and Geba,
Anathoth with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands--four cities.18 and Anathoth, and Almon, with their suburbs: four cities.
The cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were in all thirteen cities with their pasture lands.19 All the cities together of the sons of Aaron, the priest, were thirteen, with their suburbs.
As to the rest of the Kohathites belonging to the Kohathite families of the Levites, the cities allotted to them were out of the tribe of Ephraim.20 Yet truly, the remainder of the families of the sons of Kohath, of the stock of Levi, were given this possession:
To them were given Shechem, the city of refuge for the slayer, with its pasture lands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasture lands,21 from the tribe of Ephraim, Shechem, one of the cities of refuge, with its suburbs, on mount Ephraim, and Gezer,
Kibza-im with its pasture lands, Beth-horon with its pasture lands--four cities;22 and Kibzaim, and Beth-horon, with their suburbs, four cities;
and out of the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,23 and from the tribe of Dan, Elteke and Gibbethon,
Aijalon with its pasture lands, Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands--four cities;24 and Aijalon and Gath-Rimmon, with their suburbs, four cities;
and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pasture lands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands--two cities.25 then, from the one half tribe of Manasseh, Taanach and Gath-Rimmon, with their suburbs, two cities.
The cities of the families of the rest of the Kohathites were ten in all with their pasture lands.26 All the cities were ten, with their suburbs; these were given to the sons of Kohath, of the lesser degree.
And to the Gershonites, one of the families of the Levites, were given out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with its pasture lands, the city of refuge for the slayer, and Beeshterah with its pasture lands--two cities;27 Likewise, to the sons of Gershon, of the stock of Levi, from the one half tribe of Manasseh, went Golan in Bashan, one of the cities of refuge, and Bosra, with their suburbs, two cities;
and out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands,28 also, from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion, and Daberath,
Jarmuth with its pasture lands, En-gannim with its pasture lands--four cities;29 and Jarmuth, and Engannim, with their suburbs, four cities;
and out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,30 then, from the tribe of Asher, Mishal and Abdon,
Helkath with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands--four cities;31 and Helkath and Rehob, with their suburbs, four cities;
and out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its pasture lands, the city of refuge for the slayer, Hammoth-dor with its pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands--three cities.32 likewise, from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, one of the cities of refuge, and Hammoth-Dor, and Kartan, with their suburbs, three cities.
The cities of the several families of the Gershonites were in all thirteen cities with their pasture lands.33 All the cities of the families of Gershon were thirteen, with their suburbs.
And to the rest of the Levites, the Merarite families, were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokne-am with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,34 Then, to the sons of Merari, Levites of the lesser degree, by their families, were given, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam and Kartah,
Dimnah with its pasture lands, Nahalal with its pasture lands--four cities;35 and Dimnah and Nahalal, four cities with their suburbs;
and out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands,36 from the tribe of Reuben, beyond the Jordan, opposite Jericho, Bezer in the wilderness, one of the cities of refuge, Misor and Jazer, and Jethson and Mephaath, four cities with their suburbs;
Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mepha-ath with its pasture lands--four cities;37 from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth of Gilead, one of the cities of refuge, and Mahanaim and Heshbon and Jazer, four cities with their suburbs.
and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its pasture lands, the city of refuge for the slayer, Mahanaim with its pasture lands,38 All the cities of the sons of Merari, by their families and extended families, were twelve.
Heshbon with its pasture lands, Jazer with its pasture lands--four cities in all.39 And so all the cities of the Levites, in the midst of the possession of the sons of Israel, were forty-eight,
As for the cities of the several Merarite families, that is, the remainder of the families of the Levites, those allotted to them were in all twelve cities.40 with their suburbs, each distributed by families.
The cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the people of Israel were in all forty-eight cities with their pasture lands.41 And the Lord God gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn he would deliver to their fathers. And they possessed it, and they lived in it.
These cities had each its pasture lands round about it; so it was with all these cities.42 And he gave them peace with all the surrounding nations. And none of their enemies dared to stand against them; instead, they were brought under their sovereignty.
Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers; and having taken possession of it, they settled there.43 Indeed, not so much as one word that he had promised to provide for them was left empty; instead, everything was fulfilled.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers; not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hands.
Not one of all the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.
