Romans 2

1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, whoever you are, when you judge another; for in passing judgment upon him you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things.	1 Aussi es-tu sans excuse, qui que tu sois, toi qui juges. Car en jugeant autrui, tu juges contre toi-même: puisque tu agis de même, toi qui juges,
2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who do such things.	2 et nous savons que le jugement de Dieu s'exerce selon la vérité sur les auteurs de pareilles actions.
3 Do you suppose, O man, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, you will escape the judgment of God?	3 Et tu comptes, toi qui juges ceux qui les commettent et qui les fais toi-même, que tu échapperas aujugement de Dieu?
4 Or do you presume upon the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not know that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?	4 Ou bien méprises-tu ses richesses de bonté, de patience, de longanimité, sans reconnaître que cettebonté de Dieu te pousse au repentir?
5 But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.	5 Par ton endurcissement et l'impénitence de ton coeur, tu amasses contre toi un trésor de colère, aujour de la colère où se révélera le juste jugement de Dieu,
6 For he will render to every man according to his works:	6 qui rendra à chacun selon ses oeuvres:
7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;	7 à ceux qui par la constance dans le bien recherchent gloire, honneur et incorruptibilité: la vieéternelle;
8 but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury.	8 aux autres, âmes rebelles, indociles à la vérité et dociles à l'injustice: la colère et l'indignation.
9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek,	9 Tribulation et angoisse à toute âme humaine qui s'adonne au mal, au Juif d'abord, puis au Grec;
10 but glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.	10 gloire, honneur et paix à quiconque fait le bien, au Juif d'abord, puis au Grec;
11 For God shows no partiality.	11 car Dieu ne fait pas acception des personnes.
12 All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.	12 En effet, quiconque aura péché sans la Loi, périra aussi sans la Loi; et quiconque aura péché sousla Loi, par la Loi sera jugé;
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.	13 ce ne sont pas les auditeurs de la Loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais les observateurs de la Loiqui seront justifiés.
14 When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.	14 En effet, quand des païens privés de la Loi accomplissent naturellement les prescriptions de laLoi, ces hommes, sans posséder de Loi, se tiennent à eux-mêmes lieu de Loi;
15 They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them	15 ils montrent la réalité de cette loi inscrite en leur coeur, à preuve le témoignage de leurconscience, ainsi que les jugements intérieurs de blâme ou d'éloge qu'ils portent les uns sur les autres...
16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.	16 au jour où Dieu jugera les pensées secrètes des hommes, selon mon Evangile, par le Christ Jésus.
17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast of your relation to God	17 Mais si toi, qui arbores le nom de Juif, qui te reposes sur la Loi, qui te glorifies en Dieu,
18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed in the law,	18 qui connais sa volonté, qui discernes le meilleur, instruit par la Loi,
19 and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,	19 et ainsi te flattes d'être toi-même le guide des aveugles, la lumière de qui marche dans lesténèbres,
20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--	20 l'éducateur des ignorants, le maître des simples, parce que tu possèdes dans la Loi l'expressionmême de la science et de la vérité...
21 you then who teach others, will you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal?	21 eh bien! l'homme qui enseigne autrui, tu ne t'enseignes pas toi-même! tu prêches de ne pasdérober et tu dérobes!
22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?	22 tu interdis l'adultère et tu commets l'adultère! tu abhorres les idoles, et tu pilles leurs temples!
23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?	23 Toi qui te glorifies dans la Loi, en transgressant cette Loi, c'est Dieu que tu déshonores,
24 For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."	24 car le nom de Dieu, à cause de vous, est blasphémé parmi les nations, dit l'Ecriture.
25 Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.	25 La circoncision, en effet, te sert si tu pratiques la Loi; mais si tu transgresses la Loi, avec tacirconcision, tu n'es plus qu'un incirconcis.
26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?	26 Si donc l'incirconcis garde les prescriptions de la Loi, son incirconcision ne vaudra-t-elle pas unecirconcision?
27 Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law.	27 Et celui qui physiquement incirconcis accomplit la Loi te jugera, toi qui avec la lettre et avec lacirconcision es transgresseur de la Loi,
28 For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical.	28 Car le Juif n'est pas celui qui l'est au-dehors, et la circoncision n'est pas au-dehors dans la chair,
29 He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God.	29 le vrai Juif l'est au-dedans et la circoncision dans le coeur, selon l'esprit et non pas selon la lettre:voilà celui qui tient sa louange non des hommes, mais de Dieu.
