1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.	1 En ces jours où les disciples allaient en se multipliant, certains d’entre eux, les Hellénistes, se plaignirent des Hébreux: selon eux, les veuves de leur groupe étaient négligées dans le service quotidien.
2 And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.	2 Les Douze convoquèrent alors la foule des disciples. Ils dirent: "Ce ne serait pas normal que nous laissions de côté la parole de Dieu pour assurer le service des tables.
3 Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty.	3 Trouvez plutôt parmi vous, frères, sept hommes bien considérés, remplis de l’Esprit et de sagesse: nous leur confierons cette charge
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."	4 et nous-mêmes, nous continuerons de nous donner à la prière et au service de la parole.”
5 And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.	5 Cette intervention plut à l’assemblée; on choisit Étienne, un homme rempli de foi et de l’Esprit Saint, Philippe, Procore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas et Nicolas, un prosélyte d’Antioche.
6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them.	6 On les présenta aux apôtres qui se mirent en prière et leur imposèrent les mains.
7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.	7 La parole du Seigneur se répandait; à Jérusalem le nombre des disciples était en constante augmentation et bon nombre de prêtres se soumettaient à la foi.
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.	8 Étienne jouissait d’une plénitude de grâce et de puissance, il opérait parmi le peuple des choses prodigieuses, de grands miracles.
9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, arose and disputed with Stephen.	9 Il rencontra de l’opposition de la part de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, des Cyrénéens et des Alexandrins, ainsi que d’autres de Cilicie et d’Asie. Ils se mirent à discuter avec Étienne,
10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.	10 mais ils ne pouvaient pas résister à la sagesse et à l’Esprit qui le faisaient parler.
11 Then they secretly instigated men, who said, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God."	11 Alors ils se trouvèrent des hommes pour l’accuser en ces termes: "Nous avons entendu ses blasphèmes contre Moïse et contre Dieu.”
12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council,	12 Puis ils mobilisèrent le peuple, les Anciens et les maîtres de la Loi; ils arrivèrent à l’improviste, ils l’enlevèrent et le traînèrent devant le Sanhédrin.
13 and set up false witnesses who said, "This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law;	13 Là se présentèrent de faux témoins qui dirent: "Cet homme n’arrête pas de parler contre le Lieu Saint et contre la Loi.
14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us."	14 Il dit, nous l’avons entendu, que Jésus le Nazôréen détruira ce lieu et changera les coutumes que nous avons reçues de Moïse.”
15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.	15 À ce moment tous dans le Sanhédrin se tournèrent vers lui: son visage était comme celui d’un ange.
