1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.	1 Après cela, Jésus resta en Galilée, passant d’une place à l’autre; il ne voulait pas circuler en Judée car les Juifs cherchaient à le tuer.
2 Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand.	2 La fête des Tentes, une des fêtes juives, était alors toute proche,
3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing.	3 et ses frères lui dirent: "Ne reste pas ici, monte en Judée: tes disciples là-bas ont besoin de voir les œuvres que tu fais.
4 For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."	4 On ne se cache pas quand on veut être connu: avec tout ce que tu fais, tu dois te montrer au monde.”
5 For even his brothers did not believe in him.	5 En réalité, ses frères non plus ne croyaient pas en lui.
6 Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.	6 Jésus leur dit: "L’heure pour moi n’est pas encore venue, tandis que pour vous, c’est toujours le moment favorable.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil.	7 Le monde ne peut pas vous détester, alors que moi il me déteste parce que je montre que ses œuvres sont mauvaises.
8 Go to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come."	8 Vous pouvez monter pour cette fête; moi je ne monte pas pour cette fête, parce que mon heure n’est pas encore venue.”
9 So saying, he remained in Galilee.	9 Telle fut la réponse de Jésus, et il resta en Galilée.
10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.	10 Mais quand ses frères étaient déjà montés pour la fête, Jésus aussi monta sans le dire, et comme en secret.
11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?"	11 Les Juifs le cherchaient donc au milieu de la fête et ils demandaient: "Où est cet homme?”
12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray."	12 Dans le peuple on parlait de lui à voix basse. Les uns disaient: "C’est un homme bien.” D’autres répondaient: "Pas du tout, il trompe le peuple.”
13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.	13 Mais personne ne parlait de lui ouvertement par peur des Juifs.
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.	14 La fête était déjà à moitié passée quand Jésus monta au Temple et commença à enseigner.
15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?"	15 Les Juifs en étaient tout étonnés, ils disaient: "Cet homme connaît donc les Écritures sans avoir eu de maître?”
16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me;	16 Alors vint la réponse de Jésus: "Ma doctrine ne vient pas de moi mais de celui qui m’a envoyé.
17 if any man's will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.	17 Si quelqu’un veut faire ce que Lui il veut, il saura bien si ma doctrine vient de Dieu ou si je parle pour mon compte.
18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.	18 Celui qui parle pour son propre compte cherche sa propre gloire, mais si quelqu’un cherche la gloire de celui qui l’a envoyé, c’est un homme sans malice et qui dit la vérité.
19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?"	19 C’est bien Moïse qui vous a donné la Loi? Pourtant aucun de vous n’observe la Loi. Alors, pourquoi voulez-vous me tuer?”
20 The people answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?"	20 Les Juifs lui répondent: "Tu as un démon! Qui est-ce qui cherche à te tuer?”
21 Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel at it.	21 Jésus leur dit: "J’en suis à ma première intervention et déjà vous êtes scandalisés.
22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath.	22 Voyez comment Moïse vous a ordonné la circoncision (en réalité elle ne vient pas de Moïse, mais des ancêtres) - et vous faites la circoncision même le jour du sabbat.
23 If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the sabbath I made a man's whole body well?	23 Pour ne pas désobéir à la Loi de Moïse, on donne à quelqu’un la circoncision le jour du sabbat. Alors, pourquoi me faites-vous des reproches quand je donne à quelqu’un la pleine santé le jour du sabbat?
24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment."	24 Ne jugez pas selon les apparences, jugez selon la justice.”
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?	25 Des gens de Jérusalem disaient: "C’est donc lui l’homme qu’on voudrait tuer?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?	26 Et maintenant il parle ouvertement et on ne lui dit rien. Nos chefs auraient-ils vraiment reconnu qu’il est le Messie?
27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from."	27 Pourtant nous savons bien d’où il est, alors que pour le Messie, personne ne sait d’où il sortira.”
28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know.	28 C’est pourquoi Jésus, qui enseignait dans le Temple, éleva la voix et déclara: "Vraiment vous me connaissez et vous savez d’où je suis! Je ne viens pas de moi-même. J’ai été envoyé par Celui qui est Vrai, par celui que vous ne connaissez pas.
29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me."	29 C’est lui qui m’a envoyé, et moi je le connais parce que je viens d’auprès de lui.”
30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.	30 On aurait voulu l’arrêter, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.
31 Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, "When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?"	31 Dans la foule beaucoup crurent en lui, car ils disaient: "Quand le Christ viendra, fera-t-il davantage de miracles que cet homme?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.	32 Les Pharisiens étaient au courant de tout ce qu’on disait dans le peuple à propos de Jésus. En accord avec les Pharisiens, les grands prêtres envoyèrent la police du Temple pour l’arrêter.
33 Jesus then said, "I shall be with you a little longer, and then I go to him who sent me;	33 Jésus dit alors: "Je suis avec vous pour très peu de temps encore, ensuite j’irai vers celui qui m’a envoyé.
34 you will seek me and you will not find me; where I am you cannot come."	34 Vous me chercherez, mais vous ne me trouverez pas, car vous ne pouvez pas venir où je suis.”
35 The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?	35 Aussitôt les Juifs se demandèrent: "Où veut-il aller que nous ne puissions pas le trouver? Pense-t-il visiter ceux qui ont émigré vers le monde grec et prêcher également aux Grecs?
36 What does he mean by saying, 'You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, 'Where I am you cannot come'?"	36 Qu’est-ce qu’il a dit là: Vous me chercherez et vous ne me trouverez pas, vous ne pouvez pas venir où je suis?”
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.	37 C’était le dernier jour de la fête, qui est aussi le plus important. Jésus, qui s’était mis debout, éleva la voix: "Celui qui a soif, qu’il vienne à moi! Qu’il boive,
38 He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"	38 celui qui croit en moi! L’Écriture l’a dit: Des fleuves d’eau vive jailliront de son sein.”
39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.	39 Quand Jésus disait cela, il pensait à l’Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui croient en lui. À ce moment-là on n’avait pas encore l’Esprit, puisque Jésus n’était pas encore entré dans sa gloire.
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet."	40 Bien des gens qui avaient entendu ces paroles disaient: "C’est sûrement lui le Prophète!”
41 Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee?	41 D’autres disaient: "C’est lui le Messie!” Mais certains demandaient: "Le Messie peut-il venir de Galilée?
42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"	42 Le Messie est descendant de David: n’est-ce pas dit dans l’Écriture? Et il doit venir de Bethléem, la ville de David.”
43 So there was a division among the people over him.	43 Ainsi les gens se divisaient à cause de lui.
44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.	44 Certains voulaient l’arrêter, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui.
45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?"	45 Lorsque les policiers furent de retour chez les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens, ceux-ci leur demandèrent: "Pourquoi ne l’avez-vous pas arrêté?”
46 The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!"	46 Les policiers répondirent: "Jamais un homme n’a parlé ainsi.”
47 The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also?	47 Les Pharisiens répliquèrent: "Vous aussi vous vous êtes laissé prendre?
48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him?	48 Y a-t-il seulement un chef ou un Pharisien qui ait cru en lui?
49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed."	49 Mais ce peuple qui ignore tout de la Loi, ce sont des maudits!”
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,	50 Alors intervint Nicodème, l’un d’entre eux; c’était lui qui était venu voir Jésus au début, et il demanda:
51 "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?"	51 "Est-ce que notre Loi condamne quelqu’un sans d’abord l’interroger pour savoir ce qu’il fait?”
52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee."	52 Les autres lui dirent: "Toi aussi tu es Galiléen? Regarde un peu, et tu verras que les prophètes n’arrivent pas de Galilée.”
53 They went each to his own house.	53 Et c’est ainsi que chacun retourna chez soi.
