1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us,	1 Plusieurs se sont appliqués à composer un récit des événements qui ont eu lieu parmi nous,
2 just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word,	2 tels qu’ils nous ont été transmis par ceux qui en furent les premiers témoins et qui par la suite sont devenus serviteurs de la Parole.
3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,	3 Après avoir tout étudié depuis le début et avec soin, il m’a paru bon à moi aussi, cher Théophile, de t’en faire un récit suivi.
4 that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed.	4 Ainsi tu pourras mesurer la solidité de la catéchèse que tu as reçue.
5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.	5 Au temps d’Hérode, roi de Judée, vivait un prêtre du nom de Zacharie. Il était du clan d’Abias; sa femme, qui s’appelait Élisabeth, était aussi de la descendance d’Aaron.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.	6 Tous deux étaient justes au regard de Dieu et mettaient scrupuleusement en pratique toutes les lois et toutes les ordonnances du Seigneur.
7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.	7 Mais ils n’avaient pas d’enfant: Élisabeth était stérile et tous les deux étaient déjà très âgés.
8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,	8 Or, pendant que Zacharie assurait avec son groupe le service de Dieu dans le Temple,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.	9 selon la règle établie pour les prêtres, il fut désigné par le sort pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur et y faire brûler l’encens.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.	10 Et quand ce fut l’heure d’offrir l’encens, toute la foule était en prière sur le parvis.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.	11 C’est alors qu’un ange du Seigneur lui apparut debout à droite de l’autel de l’encens.
12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.	12 À sa vue Zacharie se troubla et la peur l’envahit.
13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.	13 Mais l’ange lui dit: "N’aie pas peur Zacharie, voici que ta prière a été exaucée; ta femme Élisabeth va te donner un fils que tu appelleras Jean.
14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth;	14 Ce sera pour toi une vraie joie et beaucoup d’autres se réjouiront de sa naissance
15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.	15 car il sera un grand serviteur du Seigneur. “Il ne boira ni vin ni liqueur. Dès le sein de sa mère il sera rempli de l’Esprit Saint;
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,	16 il ramènera en grand nombre les enfants d’Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu.
17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared."	17 Il passera, en avant du Seigneur, avec l’esprit et la puissance d’Élie, pour réconcilier les pères avec leurs enfants, et ramener les rebelles à la sagesse des justes. Il préparera ainsi pour le Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.”
18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years."	18 Zacharie dit à l’ange: "Comment puis-je croire cela? Je suis un vieillard, ma femme est très âgée!”
19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.	19 Mais l’ange lui répondit: "J’ai été envoyé pour te parler et te l’annoncer, moi Gabriel qui ai accès au conseil de Dieu.
20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time."	20 Mes paroles se réaliseront au moment voulu, mais puisque toi tu n’y as pas cru, tu vas être réduit au silence; tu ne pourras plus dire un mot jusqu’au jour où tout s’accomplira.”
21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple.	21 Le peuple attendait Zacharie et l’on s’étonnait qu’il s’attarde ainsi dans le sanctuaire.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb.	22 Lorsqu’il sortit, il avait perdu l’usage de la parole et l’on se douta bien qu’il avait eu une vision dans le Temple. Il essayait de se faire comprendre, mais il restait muet.
23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.	23 Il arriva ainsi au terme de son temps de service et il retourna chez lui.
24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying,	24 Dans les jours qui suivirent, Élisabeth, sa femme, devint enceinte. Durant cinq mois elle dissimula son secret. Elle se disait:
25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."	25 "Voilà bien ce que le Seigneur a fait! Je me sentais humiliée devant tout le monde, et c’est le moment qu’il avait fixé pour me délivrer.”
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,	26 Le sixième mois, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.	27 auprès d’une vierge déjà promise en mariage à Joseph, un homme de la famille de David; le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"	28 L’ange vint à elle et lui dit: "Réjouis-toi, pleine de grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi.”
29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.	29 Marie était toute troublée de ces paroles et se demandait ce que voulait dire cette salutation.
30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.	30 Mais l’ange lui dit: "Ne crains pas, Marie! Tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.	31 Tu vas être enceinte et tu mettras au monde un fils que tu appelleras du nom de Jésus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,	32 Il sera grand, il sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut, et c’est à lui que le Seigneur Dieu donnera le trône de David son père.
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."	33 Il régnera pour toujours sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n’aura pas de fin.”
34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?"	34 Marie dit à l’ange: "Comment cela se fera-t-il puisque je n’ai pas de relations avec un homme?”
35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.	35 Mais l’ange lui répondit: "L’Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous son ombre. C’est pourquoi le saint enfant qui naîtra de toi sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.	36 “Sache que ta cousine Élisabeth a conçu elle aussi un fils dans sa vieillesse; elle en est à son sixième mois, elle qu’on appelait ‘la stérile’.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible."	37 Car rien n’est impossible à Dieu!”
38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.	38 Marie dit alors: "Je suis la servante du Seigneur, qu’il m’arrive selon ta parole!” Et l’ange se retira d’auprès d’elle.
39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,	39 En ces jours-là Marie prit sa décision et partit sans perdre de temps vers une bourgade des monts de Juda.
40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.	40 Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Élisabeth.
41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit	41 Or, quand Élisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit dans son ventre. Élisabeth fut remplie de l’Esprit Saint
42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!	42 et elle s’écria: "Tu es bénie parmi les femmes et le fruit de ton ventre est béni!
43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?	43 Que m’arrive-t-il donc? La mère de mon Seigneur vient à moi!
44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.	44 Sais-tu qu’à l’instant même où ta salutation est parvenue à mes oreilles, l’enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon ventre!
45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."	45 Tu as cru, toi, en l’accomplissement de ce que le Seigneur t’a fait dire: Heureuse es-tu!”
46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,	46 Marie dit alors: “Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,	47 mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu mon Sauveur!
48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;	48 Car il a regardé son humble servante et tous les âges désormais me diront heureuse.
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.	49 Le Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses, Saint est son Nom!
50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.	50 Sa miséricorde s’étend d’âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,	51 Il a fait un coup d’éclat, il a dispersé les orgueilleux et leurs projets.
52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;	52 Il a renversé les puissants de leur trône, il a élevé les humbles.
53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.	53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés et renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,	54 Il a repris de la main Israël, son serviteur, il s’est souvenu de sa miséricorde,
55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever."	55 comme il l’avait promis à nos pères, à Abraham et à sa descendance pour toujours.”
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.	56 Marie resta trois mois auprès d’Élisabeth, puis elle retourna chez elle.
57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son.	57 Le temps d’accoucher arriva pour Élisabeth, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.	58 Ses voisins et ses proches se réjouirent avec elle lorsqu’ils apprirent cette chose extraordinaire que le Seigneur avait faite pour elle dans sa miséricorde.
59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father,	59 Lorsqu’ils vinrent au huitième jour pour circoncire le petit enfant, ils voulurent l’appeler Zacharie du nom de son père.
60 but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John."	60 Mais sa mère déclara: "Non! Il s’appellera Jean!”
61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name."	61 Ils lui répliquèrent: "Personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom.”
62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called.	62 Alors ils demandèrent par signes à son père quel nom il voulait lui donner.
63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled.	63 Il demanda une tablette et écrivit ceci: "Son nom est Jean.” Ce fut une surprise pour tous.
64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.	64 C’est alors que sa bouche s’ouvrit et que sa langue put articuler. Il se mit à parler, bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea;	65 Cette affaire impressionna fortement le voisinage et, dans toute la région montagneuse de Judée on commentait ces événements.
66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.	66 Tous ceux qui en entendaient parler les gardaient dans leur cœur et disaient: "Que sera donc cet enfant?” Il était clair que la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,	67 Zacharie, son père, fut alors rempli de l’Esprit Saint, il dit de façon prophétique:
68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people,	68 “Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, car il a visité et délivré son peuple.
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,	69 Voici que pour nous se lève en force le salut dans la maison de David son serviteur.
70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,	70 Comme il l’avait dit dès les temps anciens, par la bouche de ses saints prophètes;
71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;	71 il nous sauverait de nos ennemis, de la main de ceux qui nous haïssent,
72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,	72 il montrerait de quel cœur il aimait nos pères, et comment il se souvenait de son alliance sainte.
73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,	73 Comme il l’avait juré à notre père Abraham,
74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,	74 il nous a libérés des mains ennemies
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.	75 et nous a donné de le servir sans crainte dans la sainteté et la justice, sous son regard, tout au long de nos jours.
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,	76 Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, toi qui passeras en avant du Seigneur pour préparer ses chemins,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,	77 pour dire à son peuple ce que sera le salut: ils recevront le pardon de leurs péchés,
78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high	78 fruit de la miséricorde de notre Dieu. Elle fera qu’il nous visite d’en-haut, tel un Soleil levant,
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."	79 pour illuminer ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres et demeurent dans les ombres de mort, pour conduire nos pas sur un chemin de paix.”
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.	80 L’enfant grandissait, et il lui venait la force de l’Esprit. Il vécut dans des lieux retirés jusqu’au jour où il se manifesta à Israël.
