1 And as soon as it was morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate.	1 Et aussitôt, le matin, les grands prêtres préparèrent un conseil avec les anciens, les scribes, et tout leSanhédrin; puis, après avoir ligoté Jésus, ils l'emmenèrent et le livrèrent à Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered him, "You have said so."	2 Pilate l'interrogea: "Tu es le roi des Juifs?" Jésus lui répond: "Tu le dis."
3 And the chief priests accused him of many things.	3 Et les grands prêtres multipliaient contre lui les accusations.
4 And Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you."	4 Et Pilate de l'interroger à nouveau: "Tu ne réponds rien? Vois tout ce dont ils t'accusent!"
5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered.	5 Mais Jésus ne répondit plus rien, si bien que Pilate était étonné.
6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.	6 A chaque Fête, il leur relâchait un prisonnier, celui qu'ils demandaient.
7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.	7 Or, il y avait en prison le nommé Barabbas, arrêté avec les émeutiers qui avaient commis un meurtredans la sédition.
8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them.	8 La foule étant montée se mit à demander la grâce accoutumée.
9 And he answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"	9 Pilate leur répondit: "Voulez-vous que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?"
10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.	10 Il se rendait bien compte que c'était par jalousie que les grands prêtres l'avaient livré.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.	11 Cependant, les grands prêtres excitèrent la foule à demander qu'il leur relâchât plutôt Barabbas.
12 And Pilate again said to them, "Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?"	12 Pilate, prenant de nouveau la parole, leur disait: "Que ferai-je donc de celui que vous appelez le roides Juifs?"
13 And they cried out again, "Crucify him."	13 Mais eux crièrent de nouveau: "Crucifie-le!"
14 And Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him."	14 Et Pilate de leur dire: "Qu'a-t-il donc fait de mal?" Mais ils n'en crièrent que plus fort: "Crucifie-le!"
15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	15 Pilate alors, voulant contenter la foule, leur relâcha Barabbas et, après avoir fait flageller Jésus, il lelivra pour être crucifié.
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the praetorium); and they called together the whole battalion.	16 Les soldats l'emmenèrent à l'intérieur du palais, qui est le Prétoire, et ils convoquent toute lacohorte.
17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him.	17 Ils le revêtent de pourpre, puis, ayant tressé une couronne d'épines, ils la lui mettent.
18 And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"	18 Et ils se mirent à le saluer: "Salut, roi des Juifs!"
19 And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him.	19 Et ils lui frappaient la tête avec un roseau et ils lui crachaient dessus, et ils ployaient le genoudevant lui pour lui rendre hommage.
20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.	20 Puis, quand ils se furent moqués de lui, ils lui ôtèrent la pourpre et lui remirent ses vêtements. Ils lemènent dehors afin de le crucifier.
21 And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.	21 Et ils requièrent, pour porter sa croix, Simon de Cyrène, le père d'Alexandre et de Rufus, qui passaitpar là, revenant des champs.
22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull).	22 Et ils amènent Jésus au lieu dit Golgotha, ce qui se traduit lieu du Crâne.
23 And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh; but he did not take it.	23 Et ils lui donnaient du vin parfumé de myrrhe, mais il n'en prit pas.
24 And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.	24 Puis ils le crucifient et se partagent ses vêtements en tirant au sort ce qui reviendrait à chacun.
25 And it was the third hour, when they crucified him.	25 C'était la troisième heure quand ils le crucifièrent.
26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."	26 L'inscription qui indiquait le motif de sa condamnation était libellée: "Le roi des Juifs."
27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.	27 Et avec lui ils crucifient deux brigands, l'un à sa droite, l'autre à sa gauche.

29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,	29 Les passants l'injuriaient en hochant la tête et disant: "Hé! toi qui détruis le Sanctuaire et le rebâtisen trois jours,
30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!"	30 sauve-toi toi-même en descendant de la croix!"
31 So also the chief priests mocked him to one another with the scribes, saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.	31 Pareillement les grands prêtres se gaussaient entre eux avec les scribes et disaient: "Il en a sauvéd'autres et il ne peut se sauver lui-même!
32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.	32 Que le Christ, le Roi d'Israël, descende maintenant de la croix, pour que nous voyions et que nouscroyions!" Même ceux qui étaient crucifiés avec lui l'outrageaient.
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 Quand il fut la sixième heure, l'obscurité se fit sur la terre entière jusqu'à la neuvième heure.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?" which means, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"	34 Et à la neuvième heure Jésus clama en un grand cri: "Elôï, Elôï, lema sabachthani", ce qui se traduit:"Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné?"
35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah."	35 Certains des assistants disaient en l'entendant: "Voilà qu'il appelle Elie!"
36 And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down."	36 Quelqu'un courut tremper une éponge dans du vinaigre et, l'ayant mise au bout d'un roseau, il luidonnait à boire en disant: "Laissez! que nous voyions si Elie va venir le descendre!"
37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last.	37 Or Jésus, jetant un grand cri, expira.
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.	38 Et le voile du Sanctuaire se déchira en deux, du haut en bas.
39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"	39 Voyant qu'il avait ainsi expiré, le centurion, qui se tenait en face de lui, s'écria: "Vraiment cethomme était fils de Dieu!"
40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,	40 Il y avait aussi des femmes qui regardaient à distance, entre autres Marie de Magdala, Marie mèrede Jacques le petit et de Joset, et Salomé,
41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.	41 qui le suivaient et le servaient lorsqu'il était en Galilée; beaucoup d'autres encore qui étaientmontées avec lui à Jérusalem.
42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,	42 Déjà le soir était venu et comme c'était la Préparation, c'est-à-dire la veille du sabbat,
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.	43 Joseph d'Arimathie, membre notable du Conseil, qui attendait lui aussi le Royaume de Dieu, s'envint hardiment trouver Pilate et réclama le corps de Jésus.
44 And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.	44 Pilate s'étonna qu'il fût déjà mort et, ayant fait appeler le centurion, il lui demanda s'il était mortdepuis longtemps.
45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph.	45 Informé par le centurion, il octroya le corps à Joseph.
46 And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.	46 Celui-ci, ayant acheté un linceul, descendit Jésus, l'enveloppa dans le linceul et le déposa dans unetombe qui avait été taillée dans le roc; puis il roula une pierre à l'entrée du tombeau.
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.	47 Or, Marie de Magdala et Marie, mère de Joset, regardaient où on l'avait mis.
