Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition NOVA VULGATA
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,1 In diebus autem illis venit Ioannes Baptista praedicans in desertoIudaeae
2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."2 et dicens: “ Paenitentiam agite; appropinquavit enim regnum caelorum”.
3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."3 Hic est enim, qui dictus est per Isaiam prophetam dicentem:
“ Vox clamantis in deserto:
"Parate viam Domini,
rectas facite semitas eius!" ”.
4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.4 Ipse autem Ioannes habebat vestimentum de pilis cameli et zonam pelliceamcirca lumbos suos; esca autem eius erat locustae et mel silvestre.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan,5 Tunc exibat ad eum Hierosolyma et omnis Iudaea et omnis regio circa Iordanem,
6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 et baptizabantur in Iordane flumine ab eo, confitentes peccata sua.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 Videns autem multos pharisaeorum et sadducaeorum venientes ad baptismum suum, dixit eis: “ Progenies viperarum, quis demonstravit vobis fugere a futura ira?
8 Bear fruit that befits repentance,8 Facite ergo fructum dignum paenitentiae
9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.9 et ne velitis dicere intra vos: “Patremhabemus Abraham”; dico enim vobis quoniam potest Deus de lapidibus istissuscitare Abrahae filios.
10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.10 Iam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est;omnis ergo arbor, quae non facit fructum bonum, exciditur et in ignem mittitur.
11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.11 Ego quidem vos baptizo in aqua in paenitentiam; qui autem post me venturusest, fortior me est, cuius non sum dignus calceamenta portare; ipse vosbaptizabit in Spiritu Sancto et igni,
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."12 cuius ventilabrum in manu sua, etpermundabit aream suam et congregabit triticum suum in horreum, paleas autemcomburet igni inexstinguibili ”.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.13 Tunc venit Iesus a Galilaea in Iordanem ad Ioannem, ut baptizaretur ab eo.
14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"14 Ioannes autem prohibebat eum dicens: “ Ego a te debeo baptizari, et tu venisad me? ”.
15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented.15 Respondens autem Iesus dixit ei: “ Sine modo, sic enim decetnos implere omnem iustitiam ”. Tunc dimittit eum.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him;16 Baptizatus autem Iesus, confestim ascendit de aqua; et ecce aperti sunt ei caeli, et vidit Spiritum Deidescendentem sicut columbam et venientem super se.
17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."17 Et ecce vox de caelisdicens: “Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo
mihi complacui ”.
