1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,	1 En ces jours-là, Jean le Baptiseur fait son apparition et commence à prêcher dans le désert de Juda
2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."	2 avec ce message: "Convertissez-vous, car le règne de Dieu est tout proche.”
3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."	3 C’était bien Jean que le prophète Isaïe avait en vue quand il disait: Une voix crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, aplanissez le sol devant lui.
4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.	4 Jean avait un manteau en poils de chameau et un pagne de peau autour des reins; il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel d’abeilles sauvages.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan,	5 On se mettait en marche vers lui de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de la vallée du Jourdain;
6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.	6 les gens confessaient leurs péchés et se faisaient baptiser dans les eaux du Jourdain.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?	7 Jean vit arriver sur les lieux du baptême un certain nombre de Pharisiens et de Saducéens. Il leur dit: "Race de vipères, qui vous donnera le moyen d’échapper à la Colère qui vient?
8 Bear fruit that befits repentance,	8 Convertissez-vous et qu’on en voie le fruit.
9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.	9 Ne croyez pas qu’il vous suffira de dire: Abraham est notre père! Car, je vous le dis, Dieu est capable de faire sortir même de ces pierres des enfants d’Abraham.
10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.	10 Déjà la hache est au pied de l’arbre: tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits va être abattu et jeté au feu.
11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.	11 “Moi je vous donne un baptême d’eau, en vue d’une conversion, mais derrière moi vient un autre plus fort que moi, et je ne mérite même pas de lui présenter ses sandales. Lui vous baptisera dans l’Esprit Saint et dans le feu.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."	12 Il tient déjà la pelle en main pour nettoyer son blé; il amassera le grain dans son grenier et brûlera la paille dans le feu qui ne s’éteint pas.”
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.	13 C’est alors que Jésus vient de la Galilée au Jourdain pour trouver Jean et se faire baptiser par lui.
14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"	14 Jean cherche à l’en détourner: "Quoi? Tu viens à moi? C’est moi qui devrais me faire baptiser par toi!”
15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented.	15 Mais Jésus lui répond: "Laisse donc, c’est seulement de cette façon que tout sera dans l’ordre.” Alors Jean le laisse faire.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him;	16 Le baptême terminé, Jésus sortit des eaux. Alors les cieux s’ouvrirent et Jésus vit l’Esprit de Dieu qui descendait comme fait la colombe et s’arrêtait sur lui.
17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."	17 Une voix se fit entendre, venant du Ciel: "C’est lui mon Fils, le Bien-Aimé, celui en qui je me complais.”
