1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,	1 Terminati tutti questi discorsi, Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli:
2 "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of man will be delivered up to be crucified."	2 «Voi sapete che fra due giorni è la Pasqua e il Figlio dell’uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifisso».
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,	3 Allora i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nel palazzo del sommo sacerdote, che si chiamava Caifa,
4 and took counsel together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.	4 e tennero consiglio per catturare Gesù con un inganno e farlo morire.
5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult among the people."	5 Dicevano però: «Non durante la festa, perché non avvenga una rivolta fra il popolo».
6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,	6 Mentre Gesù si trovava a Betània, in casa di Simone il lebbroso,
7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head, as he sat at table.	7 gli si avvicinò una donna che aveva un vaso di alabastro, pieno di profumo molto prezioso, e glielo versò sul capo mentre egli stava a tavola.
8 But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste?	8 I discepoli, vedendo ciò, si sdegnarono e dissero: «Perché questo spreco?
9 For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, and given to the poor."	9 Si poteva venderlo per molto denaro e darlo ai poveri!».
10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.	10 Ma Gesù se ne accorse e disse loro: «Perché infastidite questa donna? Ella ha compiuto un’azione buona verso di me.
11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.	11 I poveri infatti li avete sempre con voi, ma non sempre avete me.
12 In pouring this ointment on my body she has done it to prepare me for burial.	12 Versando questo profumo sul mio corpo, lei lo ha fatto in vista della mia sepoltura.
13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."	13 In verità io vi dico: dovunque sarà annunciato questo Vangelo, nel mondo intero, in ricordo di lei si dirà anche ciò che ella ha fatto».
14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Allora uno dei Dodici, chiamato Giuda Iscariota, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti
15 and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.	15 e disse: «Quanto volete darmi perché io ve lo consegni?». E quelli gli fissarono trenta monete d’argento.
16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.	16 Da quel momento cercava l’occasione propizia per consegnarlo.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?"	17 Il primo giorno degli Azzimi, i discepoli si avvicinarono a Gesù e gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che prepariamo per te, perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?».
18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples.'"	18 Ed egli rispose: «Andate in città da un tale e ditegli: “Il Maestro dice: Il mio tempo è vicino; farò la Pasqua da te con i miei discepoli”».
19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.	19 I discepoli fecero come aveva loro ordinato Gesù, e prepararono la Pasqua.
20 When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples;	20 Venuta la sera, si mise a tavola con i Dodici.
21 and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."	21 Mentre mangiavano, disse: «In verità io vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà».
22 And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?"	22 Ed essi, profondamente rattristati, cominciarono ciascuno a domandargli: «Sono forse io, Signore?».
23 He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me.	23 Ed egli rispose: «Colui che ha messo con me la mano nel piatto, è quello che mi tradirà.
24 The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."	24 Il Figlio dell’uomo se ne va, come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell’uomo dal quale il Figlio dell’uomo viene tradito! Meglio per quell’uomo se non fosse mai nato!».
25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to him, "You have said so."	25 Giuda, il traditore, disse: «Rabbì, sono forse io?». Gli rispose: «Tu l’hai detto».
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."	26 Ora, mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese il pane, recitò la benedizione, lo spezzò e, mentre lo dava ai discepoli, disse: «Prendete, mangiate: questo è il mio corpo».
27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;	27 Poi prese il calice, rese grazie e lo diede loro, dicendo: «Bevetene tutti,
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 perché questo è il mio sangue dell’alleanza, che è versato per molti per il perdono dei peccati.
29 I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."	29 Io vi dico che d’ora in poi non berrò di questo frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo con voi, nel regno del Padre mio».
30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.	30 Dopo aver cantato l’inno, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.
31 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'	31 Allora Gesù disse loro: «Questa notte per tutti voi sarò motivo di scandalo. Sta scritto infatti: Percuoterò il pastore e saranno disperse le pecore del gregge.
32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."	32 Ma, dopo che sarò risorto, vi precederò in Galilea».
33 Peter declared to him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away."	33 Pietro gli disse: «Se tutti si scandalizzeranno di te, io non mi scandalizzerò mai».
34 Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."	34 Gli disse Gesù: «In verità io ti dico: questa notte, prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte».
35 Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you." And so said all the disciples.	35 Pietro gli rispose: «Anche se dovessi morire con te, io non ti rinnegherò». Lo stesso dissero tutti i discepoli.
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go yonder and pray."	36 Allora Gesù andò con loro in un podere, chiamato Getsèmani, e disse ai discepoli: «Sedetevi qui, mentre io vado là a pregare».
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.	37 E, presi con sé Pietro e i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a provare tristezza e angoscia.
38 Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me."	38 E disse loro: «La mia anima è triste fino alla morte; restate qui e vegliate con me».
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt."	39 Andò un poco più avanti, cadde faccia a terra e pregava, dicendo: «Padre mio, se è possibile, passi via da me questo calice! Però non come voglio io, ma come vuoi tu!».
40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour?	40 Poi venne dai discepoli e li trovò addormentati. E disse a Pietro: «Così, non siete stati capaci di vegliare con me una sola ora?
41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."	41 Vegliate e pregate, per non entrare in tentazione. Lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole».
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done."	42 Si allontanò una seconda volta e pregò dicendo: «Padre mio, se questo calice non può passare via senza che io lo beva, si compia la tua volontà».
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.	43 Poi venne e li trovò di nuovo addormentati, perché i loro occhi si erano fatti pesanti.
44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.	44 Li lasciò, si allontanò di nuovo e pregò per la terza volta, ripetendo le stesse parole.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Poi si avvicinò ai discepoli e disse loro: «Dormite pure e riposatevi! Ecco, l’ora è vicina e il Figlio dell’uomo viene consegnato in mano ai peccatori.
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."	46 Alzatevi, andiamo! Ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino».
47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.	47 Mentre ancora egli parlava, ecco arrivare Giuda, uno dei Dodici, e con lui una grande folla con spade e bastoni, mandata dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani del popolo.
48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him."	48 Il traditore aveva dato loro un segno, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; arrestatelo!».
49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail, Master!" And he kissed him.	49 Subito si avvicinò a Gesù e disse: «Salve, Rabbì!». E lo baciò.
50 Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.	50 E Gesù gli disse: «Amico, per questo sei qui!». Allora si fecero avanti, misero le mani addosso a Gesù e lo arrestarono.
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear.	51 Ed ecco, uno di quelli che erano con Gesù impugnò la spada, la estrasse e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote, staccandogli un orecchio.
52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.	52 Allora Gesù gli disse: «Rimetti la tua spada al suo posto, perché tutti quelli che prendono la spada, di spada moriranno.
53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?	53 O credi che io non possa pregare il Padre mio, che metterebbe subito a mia disposizione più di dodici legioni di angeli?
54 But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?"	54 Ma allora come si compirebbero le Scritture, secondo le quali così deve avvenire?».
55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.	55 In quello stesso momento Gesù disse alla folla: «Come se fossi un ladro siete venuti a prendermi con spade e bastoni. Ogni giorno sedevo nel tempio a insegnare, e non mi avete arrestato.
56 But all this has taken place, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.	56 Ma tutto questo è avvenuto perché si compissero le Scritture dei profeti». Allora tutti i discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono.
57 Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.	57 Quelli che avevano arrestato Gesù lo condussero dal sommo sacerdote Caifa, presso il quale si erano riuniti gli scribi e gli anziani.
58 But Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end.	58 Pietro intanto lo aveva seguito, da lontano, fino al palazzo del sommo sacerdote; entrò e stava seduto fra i servi, per vedere come sarebbe andata a finire.
59 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,	59 I capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano una falsa testimonianza contro Gesù, per metterlo a morte;
60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward	60 ma non la trovarono, sebbene si fossero presentati molti falsi testimoni. Finalmente se ne presentarono due,
61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"	61 che affermarono: «Costui ha dichiarato: “Posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e ricostruirlo in tre giorni”».
62 And the high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"	62 Il sommo sacerdote si alzò e gli disse: «Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?».
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."	63 Ma Gesù taceva. Allora il sommo sacerdote gli disse: «Ti scongiuro, per il Dio vivente, di dirci se sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio».
64 Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."	64 «Tu l’hai detto – gli rispose Gesù –; anzi io vi dico: d’ora innanzi vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nubi del cielo».
65 Then the high priest tore his robes, and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.	65 Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti dicendo: «Ha bestemmiato! Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Ecco, ora avete udito la bestemmia;
66 What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death."	66 che ve ne pare?». E quelli risposero: «È reo di morte!».
67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped him,	67 Allora gli sputarono in faccia e lo percossero; altri lo schiaffeggiarono,
68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?"	68 dicendo: «Fa’ il profeta per noi, Cristo! Chi è che ti ha colpito?».
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a maid came up to him, and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean."	69 Pietro intanto se ne stava seduto fuori, nel cortile. Una giovane serva gli si avvicinò e disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù, il Galileo!».
70 But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean."	70 Ma egli negò davanti a tutti dicendo: «Non capisco che cosa dici».
71 And when he went out to the porch, another maid saw him, and she said to the bystanders, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."	71 Mentre usciva verso l’atrio, lo vide un’altra serva e disse ai presenti: «Costui era con Gesù, il Nazareno».
72 And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."	72 Ma egli negò di nuovo, giurando: «Non conosco quell’uomo!».
73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you."	73 Dopo un poco, i presenti si avvicinarono e dissero a Pietro: «È vero, anche tu sei uno di loro: infatti il tuo accento ti tradisce!».
74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the cock crowed.	74 Allora egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quell’uomo!». E subito un gallo cantò.
75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.	75 E Pietro si ricordò della parola di Gesù, che aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». E, uscito fuori, pianse amaramente.
