Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition VULGATA
Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;1 Et factum est, cum consummasset Jesus sermones istos, migravit a Galilæa, et venit in fines Judææ trans Jordanem,
and large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.2 et secutæ sunt eum turbæ multæ, et curavit eos ibi.
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"3 Et accesserunt ad eum pharisæi tentantes eum, et dicentes : Si licet homini dimittere uxorem suam, quacumque ex causa ?
He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female,4 Qui respondens, ait eis : Non legistis, quia qui fecit hominem ab initio, masculum et feminam fecit eos ? Et dixit :
and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one'?5 Propter hoc dimittet homo patrem, et matrem, et adhærebit uxori suæ, et erunt duo in carne una.
So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."6 Itaque jam non sunt duo, sed una caro. Quod ergo Deus conjunxit, homo non separet.
They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?"7 Dicunt illi : Quid ergo Moyses mandavit dare libellum repudii, et dimittere ?
He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.8 Ait illis : Quoniam Moyses ad duritiam cordis vestri permisit vobis dimittere uxores vestras : ab initio autem non fuit sic.
And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman, commits adultery."9 Dico autem vobis, quia quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, nisi ob fornicationem, et aliam duxerit, mœchatur : et qui dimissam duxerit, mœchatur.
The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry."10 Dicunt ei discipuli ejus : Si ita est causa hominis cum uxore, non expedit nubere.
But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.11 Qui dixit illis : Non omnes capiunt verbum istud, sed quibus datum est.
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."12 Sunt enim eunuchi, qui de matris utero sic nati sunt : et sunt eunuchi, qui facti sunt ab hominibus : et sunt eunuchi, qui seipsos castraverunt propter regnum cælorum. Qui potest capere capiat.
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people;13 Tunc oblati sunt ei parvuli, ut manus eis imponeret, et oraret. Discipuli autem increpabant eos.
but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."14 Jesus vero ait eis : Sinite parvulos, et nolite eos prohibere ad me venire : talium est enim regnum cælorum.
And he laid his hands on them and went away.15 Et cum imposuisset eis manus, abiit inde.
And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?"16 Et ecce unus accedens, ait illi : Magister bone, quid boni faciam ut habeam vitam æternam ?
And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments."17 Qui dixit ei : Quid me interrogas de bono ? Unus est bonus, Deus. Si autem vis ad vitam ingredi, serva mandata.
He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,18 Dicit illi : Quæ ? Jesus autem dixit : Non homicidium facies ; non adulterabis ; non facies furtum ; non falsum testimonium dices ;
Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself."19 honora patrem tuum, et matrem tuam, et diliges proximum tuum sicut teipsum.
The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?"20 Dicit illi adolescens : Omnia hæc custodivi a juventute mea : quid adhuc mihi deest ?
Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."21 Ait illi Jesus : Si vis perfectus esse, vade, vende quæ habes, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me.
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.22 Cum audisset autem adolescens verbum, abiit tristis : erat enim habens multas possessiones.
And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.23 Jesus autem dixit discipulis suis : Amen dico vobis, quia dives difficile intrabit in regnum cælorum.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."24 Et iterum dico vobis : Facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare in regnum cælorum.
When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"25 Auditis autem his, discipuli mirabantur valde, dicentes : Quis ergo poterit salvus esse ?
But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."26 Aspiciens autem Jesus, dixit illis : Apud homines hoc impossibile est : apud Deum autem omnia possibilia sunt.
Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?"27 Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei : Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te : quid ergo erit nobis ?
Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.28 Jesus autem dixit illis : Amen dico vobis, quod vos, qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione cum sederit Filius hominis in sede majestatis suæ, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.
And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.29 Et omnis qui reliquerit domum, vel fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut uxorem, aut filios, aut agros propter nomen meum, centuplum accipiet, et vitam æternam possidebit.
But many that are first will be last, and the last first.30 Multi autem erunt primi novissimi, et novissimi primi.
