1 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams."	1 - Disse Balaam a Balac: «Fammi edificar qui sette altari, e preparami altrettanti vitelli e altrettanti arieti».
2 Balak did as Balaam had said; and Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram.	2 Avendo quegli fatto secondo la richiesta di Balaam, insieme misero su ciascun altare un vitello ed un ariete.
3 And Balaam said to Balak, "Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the LORD will come to meet me; and whatever he shows me I will tell you." And he went to a bare height.	3 Poi disse Balaam a Balac: «Resta un poco presso i tuoi olocausti, tanto ch'io vada a vedere se il Signore mi si fa innanzi, per poi dirti tutto quello ch'ei mi comanderà».
4 And God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, "I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered upon each altar a bull and a ram."	4 Andatosene in fretta, gli si fece incontro Iddio. Disse Balaam: «Ho edificato sette altari, e v'ho imposto sopra un vitello ed un ariete».
5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."	5 Allora il Signore gli mise in bocca le parole, e disse: «Ritorna a Balac, e digli questo e questo».
6 And he returned to him, and lo, he and all the princes of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering.	6 Ritornato, trovò Balac che stava presso il suo olocausto con tutti i principi de' Moabiti.
7 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said, "From Aram Balak has brought me, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: 'Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, denounce Israel!'	7 E prese a vaticinare dicendo: «Da Aram qui mi condusse Balac, da' monti dell'oriente il re de' Moabiti. Vieni, disse, e maledici Giacobbe; affrettati ad esecrare Israele.
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?	8 Come maledirò io chi da Dio non è maledetto?come esecrerò chi dal Signore non è esecrato?
9 For from the top of the mountains I see him, from the hills I behold him; lo, a people dwelling alone, and not reckoning itself among the nations!	9 Io lo vedrò di cima alle rocce, lo guarderò dalle colline. Quel popolo abiterà da solo, non sarà annoverato tra le genti.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!"	10 Chi potrà contare la polvere di Giacobbe, conoscere il numero dei discendenti di Israele?Chiudasi la mia vita con la morte de' giusti, e sia la mia fine simile alla loro.»
11 And Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them."	11 Disse allora Balac a Balaam: «Ma che cosa mi fai? T'ho chiamato perchè tu maledicessi a' miei nemici, e tu invece li benedici».
12 And he answered, "Must I not take heed to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?"	12 Rispose: «Posso io forse parlare diversamente da come m'ha comandato il Signore?».
13 And Balak said to him, "Come with me to another place, from which you may see them; you shall see only the nearest of them, and shall not see them all; then curse them for me from there."	13 Balac allora gli disse: «Vieni meco in altro luogo, donde vedrai un'altra parte d'Israele, non potendolo veder tutto; di lì, lo maledirai».
14 And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.	14 E lo condusse in un luogo molto alto, sulla vetta del monte Fasga. Ivi Balaam innalzò sette altari, ed impostovi sopra un vitello ed un ariete,
15 Balaam said to Balak, "Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder."	15 disse a Balac: «Resta qui presso il tuo olocausto, sinchè io vada incontro [al Signore]».
16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak."	16 Il Signore infatti gli si fece incontro, e postegli in bocca le parole disse: «Torna a Balac, e digli così e così».
17 And he came to him, and, lo, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, "What has the LORD spoken?"	17 Tornato Balaam, lo trovò che stava presso il suo olocausto, ed i principi de' Moabiti con lui. Balac gli domandò: «Che cos'ha detto il Signore?».
18 And Balaam took up his discourse, and said, "Rise, Balak, and hear; hearken to me, O son of Zippor:	18 Ed egli, cominciando a profetare, disse: «Levati, Balac, e ascolta; odi, figlio di Sefor,
19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfil it?	19 Dio non è come l'uomo, che mentisca; nè come il figlio dell'uomo, che muti. Ha detto: non farà?Ha parlato: non eseguirà?
20 Behold, I received a command to bless: he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.	20 Io son stato qui condotto per benedire; non posso rimandar indietro la benedizione.
21 He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob; nor has he seen trouble in Israel. The LORD their God is with them, and the shout of a king is among them.	21 Non v'è idolo in Giacobbe, nè si veggono simulacri in Israele. Con lui è il Signore Dio suo, in mezzo a lui lo squillo per la vittoria del re.
22 God brings them out of Egypt; they have as it were the horns of the wild ox.	22 Lo cavò Iddio dall'Egitto, e la sua forza è simile a quella del rinoceronte.
23 For there is no enchantment against Jacob, no divination against Israel; now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel, 'What has God wrought!'	23 Non si fanno incantesimi in Giacobbenè divinazioni in Israele. A suo tempo sarà detto a Giacobbe ed Israeleche cosa ha operato Iddio.
24 Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up and as a lion it lifts itself; it does not lie down till it devours the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain."	24 Ecco, quel popolo si leverà come una leonessa, si rizzerà come un leone; non si sdraierà sinchè non divori la preda, e beva il sangue degli uccisi.»
25 And Balak said to Balaam, "Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all."	25 Disse Balac a Balaam: «Non lo maledire, ma nemmeno benedicilo».
26 But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not tell you, 'All that the LORD says, that I must do'?"	26 E Balaam: «Non ti dissi già che avrei fatto tutto quello che m'avesse comandato Iddio?».
27 And Balak said to Balaam, "Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there."	27 Dissegli Balac: «Vieni, e ti condurrò in un altro luogo, per vedere se di lì piacesse al Signore che tu li maledica».
28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks the desert.	28 E lo condusse sulla cima del monte Fogor, che guarda il deserto.
29 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars, and provide for me here seven bulls and seven rams."	29 Balaam gli disse: «Alzami qui sette altari, e prepara altrettanti vitelli ed altrettanti arieti».
30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.	30 Balac fece come Balaam gli aveva chiesto, ed impose su ciascun altare il vitello e l'ariete.
