1 Every friend will say, "I too am a friend"; but some friends are friends only in name.	1 Todo amigo diz: “Eu também contraí amizade”. Há porém um amigo que só o é de nome. Não é uma dor que dura até a morte
2 Is it not a grief to the death when a companion and friend turns to enmity?	2 ver um amigo e um companheiro mudarem-se em inimigos?
3 O evil imagination, why were you formed to cover the land with deceit?	3 Ó presunção criminosa, onde tiveste origem, para cobrir a terra com tua malícia e tua perfídia?
4 Some companions rejoice in the happiness of a friend, but in time of trouble are against him.	4 O amigo distrai-se com seu amigo nas suas alegrias; no dia da tribulação, ele se tornará seu adversário.
5 Some companions help a friend for their stomach's sake, and in the face of battle take up the shield.	5 O amigo compartilha da desventura do seu amigo no interesse de seu ventre; ao ver o inimigo, tomará do escudo.
6 Do not forget a friend in your heart, and be not unmindful of him in your wealth.	6 Não te esqueças de teu amigo nos teus pensamentos; no meio da riqueza, não percas a sua lembrança.
7 Every counselor praises counsel, but some give counsel in their own interest.	7 Não te aconselhes com aquele que te arma um laço. Esconde tuas intenções àqueles que te têm inveja.
8 Be wary of a counselor, and learn first what is his interest-- for he will take thought for himself-- lest he cast the lot against you	8 Todo conselheiro dá sua opinião, mas há conselheiros que só têm em vista o próprio interesse.
9 and tell you, "Your way is good," and then stand aloof to see what will happen to you.	9 Estejas prevenido quando tratar-se de um conselheiro; informa-te primeiro quais são os seus interesses, pois ele pensa em si mesmo antes de tudo.
10 Do not consult the one who looks at you suspiciously; hide your counsel from those who are jealous of you.	10 Teme que ele plante uma estaca no solo e te diga:
11 Do not consult with a woman about her rival or with a coward about war, with a merchant about barter or with a buyer about selling, with a grudging man about gratitude or with a merciless man about kindness, with an idler about any work or with a man hired for a year about completing his work, with a lazy servant about a big task-- pay no attention to these in any matter of counsel.	11 “Estás no bom caminho”, enquanto se põe defronte para ver o que te acontecerá.
12 But stay constantly with a godly man whom you know to be a keeper of the commandments, whose soul is in accord with your soul, and who will sorrow with you if you fail.	12 Vai consultar um homem sem religião sobre as coisas santas; um injusto sobre a justiça; uma mulher sobre sua rival; um tímido sobre a guerra; um mercador sobre o negócio; um comprador sobre uma coisa para vender; um invejoso sobre a gratidão;
13 And establish the counsel of your own heart, for no one is more faithful to you than it is.	13 um ímpio sobre a piedade; um homem desonrado sobre a honestidade; um lavrador sobre o seu trabalho;
14 For a man's soul sometimes keeps him better informed than seven watchmen sitting high on a watchtower.	14 um operário, contratado por um ano, sobre o término de seu contrato; um criado preguiçoso sobre uma grande tarefa! Não confies neles e em nenhum de seus conselhos.
15 And besides all this pray to the Most High that he may direct your way in truth.	15 Sê, porém, assíduo junto a um santo homem, quando conheceres um que seja fiel ao temor a Deus,
16 Reason is the beginning of every work, and counsel precedes every undertaking.	16 cuja alma se irmana à tua, e que compartilhará da tua dor quando titubeares nas trevas.
17 As a clue to changes of heart	17 Fortalece em ti um coração prudente, pois nada tem mais valor para ti.
18 four turns of fortune appear, good and evil, life and death; and it is the tongue that continually rules them.	18 A alma de um santo homem descobre às vezes melhor a verdade que sete sentinelas postas em observação numa colina.
19 A man may be shrewd and the teacher of many, and yet be unprofitable to himself.	19 Mas em todas as coisas ora ao Altíssimo, para que ele dirija teus passos na verdade.
20 A man skilled in words may be hated; he will be destitute of all food,	20 Que uma palavra de verdade preceda todos os teus atos, e um conselho firme preceda toda a tua diligência.
21 for grace was not given him by the Lord, since he is lacking in all wisdom.	21 Uma palavra má transtorna o coração; dela vêm quatro coisas: o bem e o mal, a vida e a morte; sobre estas quem domina de contínuo é a língua.
22 A man may be wise to his own advantage, and the fruits of his understanding may be trustworthy on his lips.	22 Há homem hábil que ensina a muita gente, mas que é inútil para si mesmo.
23 A wise man will instruct his own people, and the fruits of his understanding will be trustworthy.	23 Outro é esclarecido e instrui a muitos, e é agradável a si próprio.
24 A wise man will have praise heaped upon him, and all who see him will call him happy.	24 Aquele que afeta sabedoria nas palavras é odioso; ficará desprovido de tudo.
25 The life of a man is numbered by days, but the days of Israel are without number.	25 Não recebeu o favor do Senhor, pois é desprovido de toda sabedoria.
26 He who is wise among his people will inherit confidence, and his name will live for ever.	26 Há um sábio que é sábio para si mesmo, e os frutos de sua sabedoria são verdadeiramente louváveis.
27 My son, test your soul while you live; see what is bad for it and do not give it that.	27 O sábio ensina o seu povo, e os frutos de sua sabedoria são duradouros.
28 For not everything is good for every one, and not every person enjoys everything.	28 O homem sábio será cumulado de bênçãos. Aqueles que o virem o louvarão.
29 Do not have an insatiable appetite for any luxury, and do not give yourself up to food;	29 A vida do homem conta poucos dias, mas os dias de Israel são inúmeros.
30 for overeating brings sickness, and gluttony leads to nausea.	30 O sábio herdará a honra no meio do povo, e o seu nome viverá eternamente.
31 Many have died of gluttony, but he who is careful to avoid it prolongs his life.	31 Meu filho, experimenta tua alma durante tua vida; se o poder lhe for nefasto, não lho dês,
	32 pois nem tudo é vantajoso para todos, e todos não se comprazem nas mesmas coisas.
	33 Nunca sejas guloso em banquete algum; não te lances sobre tudo o que se serve,
	34 pois o excesso no alimento é causa de doença, e a intemperança leva à cólica.
	35 Muitos morreram por causa de sua intemperança, o homem sóbrio, porém, prolonga sua vida.
