Sirach 3

1 Listen to me your father, O children; and act accordingly, that you may be kept in safety.	1 Figli, ascoltatemi, sono vostro padre; agite in modo da essere salvati.
2 For the Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons.	2 Il Signore vuole che il padre sia onorato dai figli, ha stabilito il diritto della madre sulla prole.
3 Whoever honors his father atones for sins,	3 Chi onora il padre espia i peccati;
4 and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure.	4 chi riverisce la madre è come chi accumula tesori.
5 Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard.	5 Chi onora il padre avrà gioia dai propri figli e sarà esaudito nel giorno della sua preghiera.
6 Whoever glorifies his father will have long life, and whoever obeys the Lord will refresh his mother;	6 Chi riverisce il padre vivrà a lungo; chi obbedisce al Signore dà consolazione alla madre.
7 he will serve his parents as his masters.	7 Chi teme il Signore rispetta il padre e serve come padroni i genitori.
8 Honor your father by word and deed, that a blessing from him may come upon you.	8 Onora tuo padre a fatti e a parole, perché scenda su di te la sua benedizione.
9 For a father's blessing strengthens the houses of the children, but a mother's curse uproots their foundations.	9 La benedizione del padre consolida le case dei figli, la maledizione della madre ne scalza le fondamenta.
10 Do not glorify yourself by dishonoring your father, for your father's dishonor is no glory to you.	10 Non vantarti del disonore di tuo padre, perché il disonore del padre non è gloria per te;
11 For a man's glory comes from honoring his father, and it is a disgrace for children not to respect their mother.	11 la gloria di un uomo dipende dall'onore del padre, vergogna per i figli è una madre nel disonore.
12 O son, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives;	12 Figlio, soccorri tuo padre nella vecchiaia, non contristarlo durante la sua vita.
13 even if he is lacking in understanding, show forbearance; in all your strength do not despise him.	13 Anche se perdesse il senno, compatiscilo e non disprezzarlo, mentre sei nel pieno vigore.
14 For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, and against your sins it will be credited to you;	14 Poiché la pietà verso il padre non sarà dimenticata, ti sarà computata a sconto dei peccati.
15 in the day of your affliction it will be remembered in your favor; as frost in fair weather, your sins will melt away.	15 Nel giorno della tua tribolazione Dio si ricorderà di te; come fa il calore sulla brina, si scioglieranno i tuoi peccati.
16 Whoever forsakes his father is like a blasphemer, and whoever angers his mother is cursed by the Lord.	16 Chi abbandona il padre è come un bestemmiatore, chi insulta la madre è maledetto dal Signore.
17 My son, perform your tasks in meekness; then you will be loved by those whom God accepts.	17 Figlio, nella tua attività sii modesto, sarai amato dall'uomo gradito a Dio.
18 The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself; so you will find favor in the sight of the Lord.	18 Quanto più sei grande, tanto più umìliati; così troverai grazia davanti al Signore;
19 .	19 perché grande è la potenza del Signore
20 For great is the might of the Lord; he is glorified by the humble.	20 e dagli umili egli è glorificato.
21 Seek not what is too difficult for you, nor investigate what is beyond your power.	21 Non cercare le cose troppo difficili per te, non indagare le cose per te troppo grandi.
22 Reflect upon what has been assigned to you, for you do not need what is hidden.	22 Bada a quello che ti è stato comandato, poiché tu non devi occuparti delle cose misteriose.
23 Do not meddle in what is beyond your tasks, for matters too great for human understanding have been shown you.	23 Non sforzarti in ciò che trascende le tue capacità, poiché ti è stato mostrato più di quanto comprende un'intelligenza umana.
24 For their hasty judgment has led many astray, and wrong opinion has caused their thoughts to slip.	24 Molti ha fatto smarrire la loro presunzione, una misera illusione ha fuorviato i loro pensieri.
25 .	25 Un cuore ostinato alla fine cadrà nel male; chi ama il pericolo in esso si perderà.
26 A stubborn mind will be afflicted at the end, and whoever loves danger will perish by it.	26 Un cuore ostinato sarà oppresso da affanni, il peccatore aggiungerà peccato a peccato.
27 A stubborn mind will be burdened by troubles, and the sinner will heap sin upon sin.	27 La sventura non guarisce il superbo, perché la pianta del male si è radicata in lui.
28 The affliction of the proud has no healing, for a plant of wickedness has taken root in him.	28 Una mente saggia medita le parabole, un orecchio attento è quanto desidera il saggio.
29 The mind of the intelligent man will ponder a parable, and an attentive ear is the wise man's desire.	29 L'acqua spegne un fuoco acceso, l'elemosina espia i peccati.
30 Water extinguishes a blazing fire: so almsgiving atones for sin.	30 Chi ricambia il bene provvede all'avvenire, al momento della sua caduta troverà un sostegno.
31 Whoever requites favors gives thought to the future; at the moment of his falling he will find support.
