Sirach 19

1 A workman who is a drunkard will not become rich; he who despises small things will fail little by little.	1 - Un operaio ubriacone non diventerà mai ricco, e chi disprezzerà il poco, andrà tra breve in rovina.
2 Wine and women lead intelligent men astray, and the man who consorts with harlots is very reckless.	2 Il vino e le donne fanno apostatare i saggi e condannano i sensati,
3 Decay and worms will inherit him, and the reckless soul will be snatched away.	3 e chi s'accoppia alle sgualdrine è un ribaldo. Putredine e vermi s'impossesseranno di lui, e sarà portato come un grande esempio, e sarà tolta via l'anima sua [temeraria].
4 One who trusts others too quickly is lightminded, and one who sins does wrong to himself.	4 Chi subito si fida, è leggero di cuore e ne scapiterà, e chi pecca [così] contro l'anima sua, sarà disprezzato.
5 One who rejoices in wickedness will be condemned,	5 Chi gode dell'iniquità, sarà infamato, e chi odia la correzione avrà abbreviata la vita: ma chi odia la loquacità estingue la malizia.
6 and for one who hates gossip evil is lessened.	6 Chi pecca contro se stesso, se ne pentirà, e chi trova piacere nelle malizia, sarà infamato.
7 Never repeat a conversation, and you will lose nothing at all.	7 Non ripetere una parola cattiva e dura, e danno non avrai.
8 With friend or foe do not report it, and unless it would be a sin for you, do not disclose it;	8 Nè all'amico nè al nemico non esporre il tuo sentimento e se hai una colpa, non la svelare.
9 for some one has heard you and watched you, and when the time comes he will hate you.	9 Perchè quegli ti ascolterà e starà in guardia di fronte a te, e simulando giustificare il tuo fallo, ti odierà, e ti starà sempre alle calcagna.
10 Have you heard a word? Let it die with you. Be brave! It will not make you burst!	10 Hai udito una parola contro il tuo prossimo? muoia in te: sta' tranquillo, non ti farà crepare.
11 With such a word a fool will suffer pangs like a woman in labor with a child.	11 [Ma] per una parola è nelle doglie lo stolto, come geme [una donna] nel parto d'un bambino.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a word inside a fool.	12 Quale una freccia confitta nella coscia carnosa, tale è una parola nel cuore dello stolto.
13 Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything, so that he may do it no more.	13 Ammonisci l'amico, [nella speranza] che non abbia fatto [ciò di cui è accusato]; e se l'ha fatto, perchè non torni a farlo. Ammonisci l'amico [nella speranza] che non abbia detto [ciò di cui è accusato]; e se l'ha detto, perchè non lo ripeta.
14 Question a neighbor, perhaps he did not say it; but if he said it, so that he may not say it again.	14 Ammonisci l'amico, perchè frequente è la calunnia;
15 Question a friend, for often it is slander; so do not believe everything you hear.	15 e non credere ad ogni ciarla. C'è chi sdrucciola con la lingua, ma non con intenzione:
16 A person may make a slip without intending it. Who has never sinned with his tongue?	16 chi invero non ha peccato con la sua lingua? Ammonisci il prossimo, prima d'usar minacce,
17 Question your neighbor before you threaten him; and let the law of the Most High take its course.	17 e fa' posto al timor dell'Altissimo.
18 .	18 Ogni sapienza è timor del Signore e in essa sta il temere Iddio, e in ogni sapienza è l'adempimento della legge.
19 .	19 La sapienza non è perizia nel malfare, e il consiglio dei peccatori non è la prudenza.
20 All wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and in all wisdom there is the fulfilment of the law.	20 C'è una furbizia ch'è insieme abominazione, e c'è lo sciocco a cui manca [solo un po' di] sapienza.
21 .	21 Meglio l'uomo scarso di sapienza e povero d'intelligenza il quale teme [Dio], che colui che abbonda in intelligenza e trasgredisce la legge dell'Altissimo.
22 But the knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence where sinners take counsel.	22 è una scaltrezza sicura, ma al tempo stesso ingiusta,
23 There is a cleverness which is abominable, but there is a fool who merely lacks wisdom.	23 e c'è chi riesce con la parola, [pur] esponendo il vero. C'è chi maliziosamente s'abbassa, e le sue viscere sono piene d'inganno!
24 Better is the God-fearing man who lacks intelligence, than the highly prudent man who transgresses the law.	24 E s'abbassa all'eccesso con grande umiltà, e china il volto e fa il mezzo sordo, e quando non è osservato, passa avanti.
25 There is a cleverness which is scrupulous but unjust, and there are people who distort kindness to gain a verdict.	25 E se per mancanza di forze è impedito di peccare, non appena troverà l'occasione di far del male, farà del male.
26 There is a rascal bowed down in mourning, but inwardly he is full of deceit.	26 Dall'aspetto si conosce l'uomo, e dal come una persona si presenta, si riconosce il saggio.
27 He hides his face and pretends not to hear; but where no one notices, he will forestall you.	27 Il vestire del corpo e il riso de' denti, e il camminar d'un uomo dan conto di lui.
28 And if by lack of strength he is prevented from sinning, he will do evil when he finds an opportunity.	28 C'è una correzione falsa [quella fatta] nell'ira da un uomo che oltraggia, e un giudizio che non è provato esser buono; e c'è chi tace ed è insieme prudente.
29 A man is known by his appearance, and a sensible man is known by his face, when you meet him.
30 A man's attire and open-mouthed laughter, and a man's manner of walking, show what he is.
