Sirach 18

1 He who lives for ever created the whole universe;	1 Colui che vive per sempre ha creato l'intero universo.
2 the Lord alone will be declared righteous.	2 Il Signore soltanto è riconosciuto giusto.
3 .	3 A nessuno è possibile svelare le sue opere e chi può indagare le sue grandezze?
4 To none has he given power to proclaim his works; and who can search out his mighty deeds?	4 La potenza della sua maestà chi potrà misurarla? Chi riuscirà a narrare le sue misericordie?
5 Who can measure his majestic power? And who can fully recount his mercies?	5 Non c'è nulla da togliere e nulla da aggiungere; non è possibile indagare le meraviglie del Signore.
6 It is not possible to diminish or increase them, nor is it possible to trace the wonders of the Lord.	6 Quando uno ha finito, allora comincia; quando si ferma, allora rimane perplesso.
7 When a man has finished, he is just beginning, and when he stops, he will be at a loss.	7 Che è l'uomo? E a che può servire? Qual è il suo bene e qual è il suo male?
8 What is man, and of what use is he? What is his good and what is his evil?	8 Quanto al numero dei giorni dell'uomo, cento anni sono già molti.
9 The number of a man's days is great if he reaches a hundred years.	9 Come una goccia d'acqua nel mare e un grano di sabbia così questi pochi anni in un giorno dell'eternità.
10 Like a drop of water from the sea and a grain of sand so are a few years in the day of eternity.	10 Per questo il Signore è paziente con gli uomini e riversa su di essi la sua misericordia.
11 Therefore the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy upon them.	11 Vede e conosce che la loro sorte è misera, per questo moltiplica il perdono.
12 He sees and recognizes that their end will be evil; therefore he grants them forgiveness in abundance.	12 La misericordia dell'uomo riguarda il prossimo, la misericordia del Signore ogni essere vivente.
13 The compassion of man is for his neighbor, but the compassion of the Lord is for all living beings. He rebukes and trains and teaches them, and turns them back, as a shepherd his flock.	13 Egli rimprovera, corregge, ammaestra e guida come un pastore il suo gregge.
14 He has compassion on those who accept his discipline and who are eager for his judgments.	14 Ha pietà di quanti accettano la dottrina e di quanti sono zelanti per le sue decisioni.
15 My son, do not mix reproach with your good deeds, nor cause grief by your words when you present a gift.	15 Figlio, ai benefici non aggiungere il rimprovero, e a ogni dono parole amare.
16 Does not the dew assuage the scorching heat? So a word is better than a gift.	16 La rugiada non mitiga forse il calore? Così una parola è più pregiata del dono.
17 Indeed, does not a word surpass a good gift? Both are to be found in a gracious man.	17 Ecco, non vale una parola più di un ricco dono? L'uomo caritatevole offre l'una e l'altro.
18 A fool is ungracious and abusive, and the gift of a grudging man makes the eyes dim.	18 Lo stolto rimprovera senza riguardo, il dono dell'invidioso fa languire gli occhi.
19 Before you speak, learn, and before you fall ill, take care of your health.	19 Prima di parlare, impara; curati ancor prima di ammalarti.
20 Before judgment, examine yourself, and in the hour of visitation you will find forgiveness.	20 Prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, così al momento del verdetto troverai perdono.
21 Before falling ill, humble yourself, and when you are on the point of sinning, turn back.	21 Umìliati, prima di cadere malato, e quando hai peccato, mostra il pentimento.
22 Let nothing hinder you from paying a vow promptly, and do not wait until death to be released from it.	22 Nulla ti impedisca di soddisfare a tempo un voto, non aspettare fino alla morte per sdebitarti.
23 Before making a vow, prepare yourself; and do not be like a man who tempts the Lord.	23 Prima di fare un voto prepara te stesso, non fare come un uomo che tenta il Signore.
24 Think of his wrath on the day of death, and of the moment of vengeance when he turns away his face.	24 Pensa all'ira del giorno della morte, al tempo della vendetta, quando egli distoglierà lo sguardo da te.
25 In the time of plenty think of the time of hunger; in the days of wealth think of poverty and need.	25 Pensa alla carestia nel tempo dell'abbondanza; alla povertà e all'indigenza nei giorni di ricchezza.
26 From morning to evening conditions change, and all things move swiftly before the Lord.	26 Dal mattino alla sera il tempo cambia; e tutto è effimero davanti al Signore.
27 A wise man is cautious in everything, and in days of sin he guards against wrongdoing.	27 Un uomo saggio è circospetto in ogni cosa; nei giorni del peccato si astiene dalla colpa.
28 Every intelligent man knows wisdom, and he praises the one who finds her.	28 Ogni uomo assennato conosce la sapienza e a colui che l'ha trovata rende omaggio.
29 Those who understand sayings become skilled themselves, and pour forth apt proverbs.	29 Quelli istruiti nel parlare anch'essi diventano saggi, fanno piovere massime eccellenti.
30 Do not follow your base desires, but restrain your appetites.	30 Non seguire le passioni; poni un freno ai tuoi desideri.
31 If you allow your soul to take pleasure in base desire, it will make you the laughingstock of your enemies.	31 Se ti concedi la soddisfazione della passione, essa ti renderà oggetto di scherno ai tuoi nemici.
32 Do not revel in great luxury, lest you become impoverished by its expense.	32 Non godere una vita di piaceri, sua conseguenza è una doppia povertà.
33 Do not become a beggar by feasting with borrowed money, when you have nothing in your purse.	33 Non impoverire scialacquando con denaro preso a prestito, quando non hai nulla nella borsa.
