1 Therefore those men were deservedly punished through such creatures, and were tormented by a multitude of animals.	1 Darum wurden sie mit Recht durch ähnliche Tiere gezüchtigt und durch eine Menge von Ungeziefer gequält.
2 Instead of this punishment thou didst show kindness to thy people, and thou didst prepare quails to eat, a delicacy to satisfy the desire of appetite;	2 Während sie auf solche Weise gezüchtigt wurden, hast du deinem Volk eine Wohltat erwiesen und mit den Wachteln seinem heftigen Verlangen eine fremdartige Nahrung gegeben.
3 in order that those men, when they desired food, might lose the least remnant of appetite because of the odious creatures sent to them, while thy people, after suffering want a short time, might partake of delicacies.	3 Während jenen in ihrem Hunger die Esslust verging wegen der Hässlichkeit der gegen sie gesandten Tiere, bekamen diese nach nur kurzer Entbehrung sogar eine fremdartige Speise.
4 For it was necessary that upon those oppressors inexorable want should come, while to these it was merely shown how their enemies were being tormented.	4 Über jene Unterdrücker sollte unabwendbarer Hunger kommen; diese aber sollten nur kurz spüren, wie ihre Feinde gequält wurden.
5 For when the terrible rage of wild beasts came upon thy people and they were being destroyed by the bites of writhing serpents, thy wrath did not continue to the end;	5 Auch damals, als die schreckliche Wut wilder Tiere über sie hereinbrach und sie durch die Bisse tückischer Schlangen umkamen, dauerte dein Zorn nicht bis ans Ende.
6 they were troubled for a little while as a warning, and received a token of deliverance to remind them of thy law's command.	6 Zur Warnung wurden sie nur kurz in Schrecken versetzt und bekamen ein Rettungszeichen, damit sie sich an die Vorschrift deines Gesetzes erinnerten.
7 For he who turned toward it was saved, not by what he saw, but by thee, the Savior of all.	7 Wer sich dorthin wandte, wurde nicht durch das gerettet, was er anschaute, sondern durch dich, den Retter aller.
8 And by this also thou didst convince our enemies that it is thou who deliverest from every evil.	8 Dadurch hast du unsere Feinde überzeugt, dass du es bist, der aus allem Übel erlöst.
9 For they were killed by the bites of locusts and flies, and no healing was found for them, because they deserved to be punished by such things;	9 Denn sie wurden durch die Bisse der Heuschrecken und der Stechfliegen getötet, ohne dass es ein Heilmittel für sie gab; sie verdienten es ja, durch solches Ungeziefer gezüchtigt zu werden.
10 but thy sons were not conquered even by the teeth of venomous serpents, for thy mercy came to their help and healed them.	10 Deine Söhne aber wurden nicht einmal durch die Zähne Gift spritzender Schlangen überwältigt; denn dein Erbarmen kam ihnen zu Hilfe und heilte sie.
11 To remind them of thy oracles they were bitten, and then were quickly delivered, lest they should fall into deep forgetfulness and become unresponsive to thy kindness.	11 Sie wurden gebissen, aber schnell wieder gerettet, damit sie sich an deine Worte erinnerten; denn sie sollten nicht in tiefes Vergessen versinken, sondern sich ungehindert deiner Wohltaten erfreuen.
12 For neither herb nor poultice cured them, but it was thy word, O Lord, which heals all men.	12 Weder Kraut noch Wundpflaster machte sie gesund, sondern dein Wort, Herr, das alles heilt.
13 For thou hast power over life and death; thou dost lead men down to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Du hast Gewalt über Leben und Tod; du führst zu den Toren der Unterwelt hinab und wieder herauf.
14 A man in his wickedness kills another, but he cannot bring back the departed spirit, nor set free the imprisoned soul.	14 Ein Mensch kann zwar in seiner Schlechtigkeit töten; doch den entschwundenen Geist holt er nicht zurück und die weggenommene Seele kann er nicht befreien.
15 To escape from thy hand is impossible;	15 Unmöglich ist es, deiner Hand zu entfliehen.
16 for the ungodly, refusing to know thee, were scourged by the strength of thy arm, pursued by unusual rains and hail and relentless storms, and utterly consumed by fire.	16 Denn die Frevler, die behaupten, dich nicht zu kennen, wurden durch die Kraft deines Armes gezüchtigt: Ungewöhnliche Regengüsse, Hagelschauer und schreckliche Wolkenbrüche peitschten auf sie nieder und Feuer verzehrte sie.
17 For--most incredible of all--in the water, which quenches all things, the fire had still greater effect, for the universe defends the righteous.	17 Das Seltsamste war, dass das Wasser, das sonst alles löscht, die Kraft des Feuers noch verstärkte; denn die Natur kämpft für die Gerechten.
18 At one time the flame was restrained, so that it might not consume the creatures sent against the ungodly, but that seeing this they might know that they were being pursued by the judgment of God;	18 Das eine Mal wurde die Flamme gezähmt, damit sie nicht die Tiere verzehrte, die gegen die Ruchlosen gesandt waren; diese sollten sehen und erkennen, dass sie von Gottes Strafe verfolgt wurden.
19 and at another time even in the midst of water it burned more intensely than fire, to destroy the crops of the unrighteous land.	19 Das andere Mal brannte die Flamme mit ungewöhnlicher Kraft mitten im Wasser, um die Erzeugnisse des schuldbeladenen Landes zu vernichten.
20 Instead of these things thou didst give thy people food of angels, and without their toil thou didst supply them from heaven with bread ready to eat, providing every pleasure and suited to every taste.	20 Dein Volk dagegen nährtest du mit der Speise der Engel und unermüdlich gabst du ihm fertiges Brot vom Himmel. Deine Gabe gewährte jeden Genuss und entsprach jedem Geschmack;
21 For thy sustenance manifested thy sweetness toward thy children; and the bread, ministering to the desire of the one who took it, was changed to suit every one's liking.	21 sie offenbarte deine zarte Liebe zu deinen Kindern. Sie erfüllte das Verlangen eines jeden, der sie genoss, und verwandelte sich in alles, was einer wollte.
22 Snow and ice withstood fire without melting, so that they might know that the crops of their enemies were being destroyed by the fire that blazed in the hail and flashed in the showers of rain;	22 Schnee und Eis hielten dem Feuer stand und schmolzen nicht. Deine Kinder sollten erkennen, dass nur die Früchte der Feinde vom Feuer vernichtet wurden, das im Hagel brannte und in den Regengüssen blitzte,
23 whereas the fire, in order that the righteous might be fed, even forgot its native power.	23 und dass es umgekehrt sogar seine eigene Kraft vergaß, damit die Gerechten Nahrung hätten.
24 For creation, serving thee who hast made it, exerts itself to punish the unrighteous, and in kindness relaxes on behalf of those who trust in thee.	24 Denn die Schöpfung, die dir, ihrem Schöpfer, dient, steigert ihre Kräfte, um die Schuldigen zu bestrafen, und hält sie zurück, um denen Gutes zu tun, die auf dich vertrauen.
25 Therefore at that time also, changed into all forms, it served thy all-nourishing bounty, according to the desire of those who had need,	25 Darum diente sie auch damals deinem Geschenk, das alle ernährte, und verwandelte sich in alles, was die Bittenden wünschten.
26 so that thy sons, whom thou didst love, O Lord, might learn that it is not the production of crops that feeds man, but that thy word preserves those who trust in thee.	26 Deine geliebten Söhne, Herr, sollten daraus lernen: Nicht die verschiedenartigen Früchte ernähren den Menschen, sondern dein Wort erhält alle, die dir vertrauen.
27 For what was not destroyed by fire was melted when simply warmed by a fleeting ray of the sun,	27 Denn dasselbe, das vom Feuer nicht vernichtet wurde, schmolz sogleich, wenn es ein flüchtiger Sonnenstrahl erwärmte.
28 to make it known that one must rise before the sun to give thee thanks, and must pray to thee at the dawning of the light;	28 So sollte man erkennen, dass man, um dir zu danken, der Sonne zuvorkommen und sich noch vor dem Aufgang des Lichtes an dich wenden muss.
29 for the hope of an ungrateful man will melt like wintry frost, and flow away like waste water.	29 Denn die Hoffnung des Undankbaren schmilzt wie winterlicher Reif und verrinnt wie unnützes Wasser.
