Ecclesiastes/Qohelet 8

1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed.	1 La sapienza dell' uomo sì traluce nel volto suo; ma il potentissimo sì le farà cambiare la faccia.
2 Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;	2 Io guardo e veggo la bocca del re, e li comandamenti del giuramento di Dio.
3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases.	3 Non ti affrettare di partire dalla faccia sua; non perseverare nelle rie opere; imperò che Iddio farà quello che a lui piacerà.
4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?"	4 Però che le parole sue sono piene di grande potestade; or chi è quelli che prende a dire a lui: per che fai tu così?
5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way.	5 Chi adempie il comandamento (suo) non proverà alcuna cosa di male; il cuore savio sì vede bene come si deve rispondere nel suo tempo.
6 For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him.	6 Ogni faccenda ha sua stagione e tempo; ma molta è (l'angoscia e) la tribulazione degli uomini.
7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?	7 Imperò che non sanno la cose passate; nè quelle che debbono venire per nullo messaggio le posson sapere.
8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.	8 Non ha l'uomo balìa di contendere allo spirito di Dio, ch' elli non tragga fuori l'anima del corpo, quando la vuole nel tempo della morte; nè non lasceranno li uomini riposare, infino che li peccati sono bilanciati, e la punizione è presso ivi; e quivi non aiuterà lo reo uomo il peccato suo.
9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt.	9 Tutte queste cose bene le ho pensate, e diedi il mio cuore acciò che io potessi vedere ogni cosa la quale si fa sotto il sole; e trovai che alcuna volta l'uomo hae signoria sopra l'altro uomo per suo danno.
10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.	10 Ancora vidi che alquanti erano in luogo santo, quando elli erano vivi, e poi dopo la morte furono l' anime loro sotterrate nello inferno, i quali erano lodati dalle persone delli intendimenti che feciono, conciosia cosa che si credeano che facessono opere giuste (e sante, e poi furono inique e malvagie); e questo si era vanitade (sotto il sole).
11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.	11 E ancora conobbi che però fanno li uomini li peccati sanza paura, però che Iddio (sofferisce, e) di dare sentenza s' indugia adosso al peccatore.
12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;	12 Ma con tutto ciò che Iddio sostenga cento volte peccando il peccatore, non si mutano i buoni uomini di fare bene a fare male; anzi continuo temono però Iddio, e fanno riverenza alla faccia di Dio; e però sono degni di molto bene (e per certo alla fine loro l'averanno).
13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.	13 E allo empio (e malvagio) sarà tolto ogni bene, (e dopo la morte averanno l' anime loro molte pene, dilungandosi da ogni bene,) e tutti li di suoi, quasi come ombra, torneranno in vano, cioè di coloro i quali Iddio non hanno temuto.
14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.	14 Ancora vidi un' altra vanitade la quale si fa sopra la terra. Alcune volte sono molti buoni uomini e giusti, a cui vengono tante sciagure, come se loro avessono fatte l'opere de' peccatori; e sono molti rei uomini i quali hanno sanza paura quello ch' egli vogliono, sì come fussono giusti. E questo giudico vanissimo; (però che non è maggiore infelicitade della felicità dei peccatori).
15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun.	15 Ora lodo dunque, che l'uomo non ha bene se non quando riceve letizia, e manuca e beve e gode; e questo solamente porterae della fatica del sudore suo, la quale è durata tutto il tempo della vita sua, il quale tempo ebbe da Dio.
16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep;	16 E anche (a Dio) puosi il mio cuore per sapere le cose segrete, e per intendere i divisamenti e le cagioni di tutte le cose che si travagliano per la terra; e feci sì come colui che non dorme nè di dì nè di notte.
17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.	17 E intesi che di nessuna sentenza nè giudicio di Dio puote l'uomo trovare cagione sopra la terra, delle cose di sotto il sole; quanto più vi s' affatica, meno ne puote trovare; e se forse egli dicesse che ne sapesse ragione, allora sa elli peggio.
