Ecclesiastes/Qohelet 8

1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed.	1 Qui est comme le sage? Qui sait expliquer quelque chose? La sagesse de l'homme fait luire sonvisage et son air austère est changé.
2 Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;	2 Ecoute l'ordre du roi, et à cause du serment divin,
3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases.	3 ne te presse pas de t'en écarter; ne t'entête pas dans un mauvais cas, parce qu'il fait ce qui luiplaît.
4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?"	4 Parce que la parole du roi est souveraine, qui lui dira: "Que fais-tu?"
5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way.	5 Celui qui garde le commandement ne connaît aucun malheur; le coeur du sage connaît le tempset le jugement,
6 For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him.	6 car il y a un temps et un jugement pour toute chose. Mais le malheur de l'homme est grave pourlui,
7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?	7 car il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera: qui pourrait lui annoncer comment ce sera?
8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it.	8 Aucun homme n'est maître du vent pour retenir le vent, personne n'est maître du jour de la mort.Il n'y a pas de sursis à la guerre, et la méchanceté ne sauve pas celui qui la commet.
9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt.	9 Tout cela je l'ai vu, en mettant tout mon coeur à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, au temps oùl'homme est maître de l'homme, pour son malheur.
10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.	10 Et ainsi j'ai vu des méchants emmenés à leur tombeau, et l'on s'en va du lieu saint, et l'on oubliedans la ville comment ils ont agi, cela aussi est vanité!
11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.	11 Parce que la sentence contre celui qui fait le mal n'est pas vite exécutée, le coeur des enfantsdes hommes est plein de l'envie de mal faire.
12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;	12 Que le pécheur fasse cent fois le mal, il survit. Mais moi je sais aussi qu'il arrive du bien à ceuxqui craignent Dieu parce qu'ils le craignent,
13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.	13 mais qu'il n'arrive pas de bien au méchant et que, comme l'ombre, il ne prolongera pas sesjours, parce qu'il ne craint pas Dieu.
14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.	14 Il y a une vanité qui se fait sur la terre: il y a des justes qui sont traités selon la conduite desméchants et des méchants qui sont traités selon la conduite des justes. Je dis que cela aussi est vanité.
15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun.	15 Et je fais l'éloge de la joie, car il n'y a de bonheur pour l'homme que dans le manger, le boire etle plaisir qu'il prend; c'est cela qui accompagne son travail aux jours de la vie que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.
16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep;	16 Après avoir mis tout mon coeur à connaître la sagesse et à observer la tâche qu'on exerce sur laterre -- car ni jour ni nuit on ne voit de ses yeux le repos --
17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out.	17 j'ai observé toute l'oeuvre de Dieu: l'homme ne peut découvrir toute l'oeuvre qui se fait sous lesoleil; quoique l'homme se fatigue à chercher, il ne trouve pas. Et même si un sage dit qu'il sait, il ne peuttrouver.
