Job 9

1 Then Job answered:	1 Job prit la parole et dit:
2 "Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be just before God?	2 En vérité, je sais bien qu'il en est ainsi: l'homme pourrait-il se justifier devant Dieu?
3 If one wished to contend with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times.	3 A celui qui se plaît à discuter avec lui, il ne répond même pas une fois sur mille.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength --who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?--	4 Parmi les plus sages et les plus robustes qui donc lui tiendrait tête impunément?
5 he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger;	5 Il déplace les montagnes à leur insu et les renverse dans sa colère.
6 who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble;	6 Il ébranle la terre de son site et fait vaciller ses colonnes.
7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars;	7 A sa défense, le soleil ne se lève pas, il met un sceau sur les étoiles.
8 who alone stretched out the heavens, and trampled the waves of the sea;	8 Lui seul a déployé les Cieux et foulé le dos de la Mer.
9 who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;	9 Il a fait l'Ourse et Orion, les Pléiades et les Chambres du Sud.
10 who does great things beyond understanding, and marvelous things without number.	10 Il est l'auteur d'oeuvres grandioses et insondables, de merveilles qu'on ne peut compter.
11 Lo, he passes by me, and I see him not; he moves on, but I do not perceive him.	11 S'il passe sur moi, je ne le vois pas et il glisse imperceptible.
12 Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him? who will say to him, 'What doest thou?	12 S'il ravit une proie, qui l'en empêchera et qui osera lui dire: "Que fais-tu?"
13 "God will not turn back his anger; beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab.	13 Dieu ne renonce pas à sa colère: sous lui restent prostrés les satellites de Rahab.
14 How then can I answer him, choosing my words with him?	14 Et moi, je voudrais me défendre, je choisirais mes arguments contre lui?
15 Though I am innocent, I cannot answer him; I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.	15 Même si je suis dans mon droit, à quoi bon lui répondre? C'est mon juge qu'il faudrait supplier.
16 If I summoned him and he answered me, I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.	16 Et si, sur mon appel, il daignait comparaître, je ne puis croire qu'il écouterait ma voix,
17 For he crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause;	17 lui, qui m'écrase pour un cheveu, qui multiplie sans raison mes blessures
18 he will not let me get my breath, but fills me with bitterness.	18 et ne me laisse même pas reprendre mon souffle, tant il me rassasie d'amertume!
19 If it is a contest of strength, behold him! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?	19 Recourir à la force? Il l'emporte en vigueur! Au tribunal? Mais qui donc l'assignera?
20 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would condemn me; though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.	20 Si je me justifie, sa bouche peut me condamner; si je m'estime parfait, me déclarer pervers.
21 I am blameless; I regard not myself; I loathe my life.	21 Mais suis-je parfait? Je ne le sais plus moi-même, et je fais fi de l'existence!
22 It is all one; therefore I say, he destroys both the blameless and the wicked.	22 Car c'est tout un, et j'ose dire: il fait périr de même l'homme intègre et le méchant.
23 When disaster brings sudden death, he mocks at the calamity of the innocent.	23 Quand un fléau mortel s'abat soudain, il se rit de la détresse des innocents.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges-- if it is not he, who then is it?	24 Dans un pays livré au pouvoir d'un méchant, il met un voile sur la face des juges. Si ce n'est pas lui, quidonc alors?
25 "My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good.	25 Mes jours passent, plus rapides qu'un coureur, ils s'enfuient sans voir le bonheur.
26 They go by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping on the prey.	26 Ils glissent comme des nacelles de jonc, comme un aigle fond sur sa proie.
27 If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer,'	27 Si je décide de refouler ma plainte, de changer de mine pour faire gai visage,
28 I become afraid of all my suffering, for I know thou wilt not hold me innocent.	28 l'effroi me saisit en face de tous mes maux, car, je le sais, tu ne me tiens pas pour innocent.
29 I shall be condemned; why then do I labor in vain?	29 Et si j'ai commis le mal, à quoi bon me fatiguer en vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,	30 Que je me lave avec de la saponaire, que je purifie mes mains à la soude?
31 yet thou wilt plunge me into a pit, and my own clothes will abhor me.	31 Tu me plonges alors dans l'ordure, et mes vêtements mêmes me prennent en horreur!
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him, that we should come to trial together.	32 Car lui n'est pas, comme moi, un homme: impossible de lui répondre, de comparaître ensemble enjustice.
33 There is no umpire between us, who might lay his hand upon us both.	33 Pas d'arbitre entre nous pour poser la main sur nous deux,
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not dread of him terrify me.	34 pour écarter de moi ses rigueurs, chasser l'épouvante de sa terreur!
35 Then I would speak without fear of him, for I am not so in myself.	35 Je parlerai pourtant, sans le craindre, car je ne suis pas tel à mes yeux!
