Job 29

1 And Job again took up his discourse, and said:	1 Job continua de s'exprimer en sentences et dit:
2 "Oh, that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;	2 Qui me fera revivre les mois d'antan, ces jours où Dieu veillait sur moi,
3 when his lamp shone upon my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;	3 où sa lampe brillait sur ma tête et sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres!
4 as I was in my autumn days, when the friendship of God was upon my tent;	4 Puissé-je revoir les jours de mon automne, quand Dieu protégeait ma tente,
5 when the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;	5 que Shaddaï demeurait avec moi et que mes garçons m'entouraient;
6 when my steps were washed with milk, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!	6 quand mes pieds baignaient dans le laitage, et du rocher coulaient des ruisseaux d'huile!
7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the square,	7 Si je sortais vers la porte de la ville, si j'installais mon siège sur la place,
8 the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose and stood;	8 à ma vue, les jeunes gens se retiraient, les vieillards se mettaient debout.
9 the princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;	9 Les notables arrêtaient leurs discours et mettaient la main sur leur bouche.
10 the voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.	10 La voix des chefs s'étouffait et leur langue se collait au palais.
11 When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it approved;	11 A m'entendre, on me félicitait, à me voir, on me rendait témoignage.
12 because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless who had none to help him.	12 Car je délivrais le pauvre en détresse et l'orphelin privé d'appui.
13 The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.	13 La bénédiction du mourant se posait sur moi et je rendais la joie au coeur de la veuve.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.	14 J'avais revêtu la justice comme un vêtement, j'avais le droit pour manteau et turban.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.	15 J'étais les yeux de l'aveugle, les pieds du boiteux.
16 I was a father to the poor, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.	16 C'était moi le père des pauvres; la cause d'un inconnu, je l'examinais.
17 I broke the fangs of the unrighteous, and made him drop his prey from his teeth.	17 Je brisais les crocs de l'homme inique, d'entre ses dents j'arrachais sa proie.
18 Then I thought, 'I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand,	18 Et je disais: "Je mourrai dans ma fierté, après des jours nombreux comme le sable.
19 my roots spread out to the waters, with the dew all night on my branches,	19 Mes racines ont accès à l'eau, la rosée se dépose la nuit sur mon feuillage.
20 my glory fresh with me, and my bow ever new in my hand.'	20 Ma gloire sera toujours nouvelle et dans ma main mon arc reprendra force.
21 "Men listened to me, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.	21 Ils m'écoutaient, dans l'attente, silencieux pour entendre mon avis.
22 After I spoke they did not speak again, and my word dropped upon them.	22 Quand j'avais parlé, nul ne répliquait, et sur eux, goutte à goutte, tombaient mes paroles.
23 They waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouths as for the spring rain.	23 Ils m'attendaient comme la pluie, leur bouche s'ouvrait comme pour l'ondée tardive.
24 I smiled on them when they had no confidence; and the light of my countenance they did not cast down.	24 Si je leur souriais, ils n'osaient y croire, ils recueillaient sur mon visage tout signe de faveur.
25 I chose their way, and sat as chief, and I dwelt like a king among his troops, like one who comforts mourners.	25 Je leur indiquais la route en siégeant à leur tête, tel un roi installé parmi ses troupes, et je les menaispartout à mon gré.
