2 Maccabees 2

1 One finds in the records that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,	1 Nei documenti si trova che il profeta Geremia ordinò ai deportati di prendere il fuoco, come già si è detto,
2 and that the prophet after giving them the law instructed those who were being deported not to forget the commandments of the Lord, nor to be led astray in their thoughts upon seeing the gold and silver statues and their adornment.	2 e che il profeta raccomandò ai deportati, consegnando loro la legge, di non dimenticarsi dei comandamenti del Signore e di non lasciarsi sviare nei pensieri, venerando le statue d'oro e d'argento e l'ornamento posto intorno ad esse.
3 And with other similar words he exhorted them that the law should not depart from their hearts.	3 Dicendo altre cose simili, li esortava a non allontanare la legge dal loro cuore.
4 It was also in the writing that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.	4 In quello scritto vi era pure che il profeta, avvertito da un oracolo, ordinò che la tenda e l'arca lo seguissero, mentre egli si recava al monte sul quale Mosè era salito per contemplare l'eredità di Dio.
5 And Jeremiah came and found a cave, and he brought there the tent and the ark and the altar of incense, and he sealed up the entrance.	5 Giunto là, Geremia trovò un abitacolo a forma di antro; v'introdusse la tenda, l'arca e l'altare dei profumi e ne ostruì la porta.
6 Some of those who followed him came up to mark the way, but could not find it.	6 Alcuni di quelli che l'avevano seguìto, si avvicinarono per segnare la via; ma non riuscirono a trovarla.
7 When Jeremiah learned of it, he rebuked them and declared: "The place shall be unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy.	7 Quando Geremia lo seppe, rimproverandoli disse loro: "Il luogo resterà ignoto sino a quando Dio avrà radunato la comunità e gli userà misericordia.
8 And then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord and the cloud will appear, as they were shown in the case of Moses, and as Solomon asked that the place should be specially consecrated."	8 Allora il Signore mostrerà di nuovo queste cose e apparirà la gloria del Signore e la nube, come si mostrava al tempo di Mosè e quando Salomone pregò affinché il tempio fosse consacrato con magnificenza".
9 It was also made clear that being possessed of wisdom Solomon offered sacrifice for the dedication and completion of the temple.	9 Vi si narrava pure come costui, da saggio qual era, offrì sacrifici per la dedicazione e il compimento del tempio.
10 Just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire came down from heaven and devoured the sacrifices, so also Solomon prayed, and the fire came down and consumed the whole burnt offerings.	10 Allo stesso modo che Mosè aveva pregato il Signore e dal cielo era disceso il fuoco che aveva consumato le vittime, così anche Salomone pregò e il fuoco disceso dall'alto consumò gli olocausti.
11 And Moses said, "They were consumed because the sin offering had not been eaten."	11 Mosè aveva detto: "Poiché non è stato mangiato, il sacrificio per il peccato è stato distrutto".
12 Likewise Solomon also kept the eight days.	12 Allo stesso modo anche Salomone celebrò gli otto giorni di festa.
13 The same things are reported in the records and in the memoirs of Nehemiah, and also that he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings.	13 Oltre a queste cose, nei documenti e nelle memorie di Neemia vi era narrato pure come questi, fondata una biblioteca, vi radunò i libri riguardanti i re e i profeti, gli scritti di Davide e le lettere dei re riguardanti le oblazioni votive.
14 In the same way Judas also collected all the books that had been lost on account of the war which had come upon us, and they are in our possession.	14 Similmente anche Giuda ha radunato i libri che erano andati dispersi a causa della guerra che ci è stata fatta. Essi sono presso di noi.
15 So if you have need of them, send people to get them for you.	15 Se, perciò, ne avete bisogno, mandateci chi ve li porti.
16 Since, therefore, we are about to celebrate the purification, we write to you. Will you therefore please keep the days?	16 Noi vi scriviamo mentre stiamo per celebrare la purificazione. Farete bene, perciò, a celebrare questi giorni.
17 It is God who has saved all his people, and has returned the inheritance to all, and the kingship and priesthood and consecration,	17 Il Dio che ha salvato tutto il suo popolo e ha restituito a tutti l'eredità, il regno, il sacerdozio e la santità,
18 as he promised through the law. For we have hope in God that he will soon have mercy upon us and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into his holy place, for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place.	18 come aveva promesso nella legge, noi speriamo che questo Dio avrà presto pietà di noi e da ogni parte che è sotto il cielo ci radunerà nel luogo santo. Poiché è lui che ci ha liberato da grandi mali e ha purificato questo luogo.
19 The story of Judas Maccabeus and his brothers, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,	19 Le cose riguardanti Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi fratelli, la purificazione del grande tempio e l'inaugurazione dell'altare;
20 and further the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,	20 come pure le guerre contro Antioco Epifane e suo figlio Eupatore;
21 and the appearances which came from heaven to those who strove zealously on behalf of Judaism, so that though few in number they seized the whole land and pursued the barbarian hordes,	21 le apparizioni avvenute dal cielo a favore di quelli che generosamente hanno lottato per il giudaismo fino a saccheggiare, loro che erano pochi, l'intera regione e a inseguire le orde barbare,
22 and recovered the temple famous throughout the world and freed the city and restored the laws that were about to be abolished, while the Lord with great kindness became gracious to them--	22 a ricuperare il tempio più famoso su tutta la terra abitata, a liberare la città e a ristabilire le leggi che stavano per essere abolite, essendo stato il Signore propizio verso di essi con tutta clemenza:
23 all this, which has been set forth by Jason of Cyrene in five volumes, we shall attempt to condense into a single book.	23 tutte queste cose, che furono esposte da Giasone di Cirene in cinque libri, noi tenteremo di riassumerle in un solo volume.
24 For considering the flood of numbers involved and the difficulty there is for those who wish to enter upon the narratives of history because of the mass of material,	24 Considerando, infatti, la massa di numeri e la difficoltà che vi è per coloro che vogliono addentrarsi nelle vicende di questa storia, a causa della quantità della materia,

26 For us who have undertaken the toil of abbreviating, it is no light matter but calls for sweat and loss of sleep,	26 Invero non è cosa facile per noi, che ci siamo assunti il duro compito di farne un riassunto, ma motivo di sudori e di veglie,
27 just as it is not easy for one who prepares a banquet and seeks the benefit of others. However, to secure the gratitude of many we will gladly endure the uncomfortable toil,	27 come appunto non è cosa semplice quella di chi prepara un banchetto e cerca la soddisfazione degli altri. Nondimeno, per l'utilità del pubblico, volentieri sopporteremo la fatica,
28 leaving the responsibility for exact details to the compiler, while devoting our effort to arriving at the outlines of the condensation.	28 lasciando all'autore l'accuratezza circa i singoli particolari e studiandoci invece di seguire le linee di una sintesi.
29 For as the master builder of a new house must be concerned with the whole construction, while the one who undertakes its painting and decoration has to consider only what is suitable for its adornment, such in my judgment is the case with us.	29 Come, infatti, l'architetto di una casa nuova deve aver cura di tutta la costruzione, mentre chi si accinge a dipingerla e a decorarla deve ricercare quanto è adatto all'ornamentazione, così penso che sia anche per noi.
30 It is the duty of the original historian to occupy the ground and to discuss matters from every side and to take trouble with details,	30 Certo, il penetrare e spaziare nelle cose, esaminandole nei particolari, è un dovere per l'autore di una storia.
31 but the one who recasts the narrative should be allowed to strive for brevity of expression and to forego exhaustive treatment.	31 Ma a chi ne fa un estratto si deve concedere di guardare alla brevità nel dire e di trascurare l'esposizione minuziosa dei fatti.
32 At this point therefore let us begin our narrative, adding only so much to what has already been said; for it is foolish to lengthen the preface while cutting short the history itself.	32 A questo punto, dunque, daremo inizio alla narrazione, senza nulla aggiungere a quanto già detto, poiché sarebbe sciocco essere prolissi in ciò che precede la storia e poi concisi nella storia medesima.
